Tasting notes

Skin contact strips away Gewurztraminer's tendency toward sweetness and replaces it with tannin, dried rose, apricot-pit bitterness, and a saline, granite-driven finish. This is the grape at its most structured and least predictable — dry, spicy, and genuinely funky in the best sense.

QV.G. is Eric Kamm's skin-contact Gewurztraminer, made from certified organic grapes grown on granite soils around Dambach-la-Ville in Alsace. The estate's vineyards sit at around 500 meters elevation on the eastern slopes of the Vosges mountains, with parcels in and around the Grand Cru Frankstein zone, where the soil and subsoil are uniformly granite — light, sandy, and stony, with low water retention that stresses vines into small, concentrated yields.

Fermentation is spontaneous with native yeasts from the grape skins. No added sulfites, unfined, unfiltered. The skin contact gives the wine its deep orange-copper color and draws out the grippy bitterness and spice that balance Gewurztraminer's natural aromatic intensity. The result reads nothing like a conventional Alsatian Gewurztraminer.

On the nose: sweet dried flowers, rose petal, raisin, and a distinct apricot-pit bitterness. On the palate: lots of fruit up front, bright acidity for the variety, spice throughout, and a dry, tannic finish that cuts through the aromatics. Despite the higher alcohol typical of this grape, the wine stays fresh and structured.

Appellation: AOC Alsace. Serve slightly chilled, around 54-58F. Open at least 20-30 minutes before pouring.

The spice and bitter finish make this a natural match for Thai or Vietnamese food, especially dishes with lemongrass, ginger, and fish sauce. It also works well with washed-rind cheeses like Munster d'Alsace, and with roasted duck or pork belly where the richness needs cutting. Avoid pairing with delicate white fish — the tannins will overpower it.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Eric Kamm

The Kamm family has farmed in Dambach-la-Ville for multiple generations. Eric Kamm took over the estate from his father, Jean-Louis, in 2005. The estate is made up of 6.5 hectares of vineyards centered on the fortified medieval town of Dambach-la-Ville, in the Bas-Rhin department of Alsace. Eric lives in a 13th-century house and has farming roots that go back generations in this village.

On taking over, Eric converted the vineyards to organic farming and moved decisively away from his father's conventional style. The vineyards sit at around 500 meters elevation on granite soils, planted with Gewurztraminer, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Auxerrois, Muscat, and Pinot Noir. Eric works with small yields and farms parcels in and around the Grand Cru Frankstein zone, where granitic sand and stone keep vines stressed and fruit concentration high.

In the cellar, Eric works with zero inputs: no commercial yeasts, no temperature control, no fining, no filtration, no added sulfites at any stage of production. Fermentation is initiated by native yeasts present on the grape skins. Skin-contact wines like the QV.G. Gewurztraminer undergo extended maceration, which adds structure, tannin, and color to what would otherwise be an aromatic white variety.

Wine region

Alsace, France

Alsace runs along the eastern edge of France, bordered by the Rhine River to the east and the Vosges Mountains to the west. The Vosges act as a rain shadow, making Alsace one of the driest wine regions in France — a condition that concentrates grape flavors and supports consistent ripening. Vineyards are planted on the lower eastern slopes of the Vosges at altitudes generally ranging from 175 to 420 meters, with soils that shift from granite and sandstone in the south to limestone and marl in the north.

Alsace produces wines under three main appellations: Alsace AOC, Alsace Grand Cru AOC, and Crémant d'Alsace AOC. The Grand Cru tier covers 51 individual classified sites; the Frankstein Grand Cru, which sits directly above Dambach-la-Ville, is defined by its uniform granite soil and sub-soil — light, sandy, and stony, with south to south-east exposures that store heat during the day and release it at night to aid ripening. Four noble varieties are permitted for Grand Cru production: Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, and Muscat. Alsace is also the only major French wine region where single-varietal labeling has historically been the norm rather than the exception.
