Tasting notes

The whole cluster, CO2-covered rest followed by foot treading pulls out red fruit and floral aromatics without heavy extraction, keeping the wine bright and drinkable at 12% ABV. The 20% Roussanne in a red blend is unusual and works here, adding a waxy, herbal note that gives the wine more complexity than a standard field blend of this weight.

This 2020 field blend from Oakstone Vineyard in Nevada County is a direct collaboration between Purity Wine and Primal Wine. The blend is 35% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre, 20% Roussanne, and 15% Carignan, all harvested and brought into the winery cold on September 15, 2020. It carries no added sulfites and clocks in at 12% ABV.

Winemaker Noel Diaz covered the fruit in carbon dioxide and left it to rest whole cluster for 10 days. On day 11, the fruit was lightly trodden by foot before being sent to press. The free-run juice was then moved to a 275-gallon tote to complete fermentation using only native yeasts. The inclusion of Roussanne as a white grape in this red field blend adds texture and aromatic lift that sets it apart from a conventional GSM-style wine.

Oakstone Vineyard sits in Nevada County within the Sierra Foothills AVA, a mountainous zone where vineyards rarely fall below 2,000 feet elevation. The rocky, granite-based soils here are dry and free-draining, producing small, thick-skinned berries with concentrated flavors. The wide diurnal temperature swings — hot days followed by cold nights driven by alpine air off the Sierra Nevada — preserve natural acidity and extend the ripening window.

Purity Wine operates out of Richmond, California, where Noel Diaz has built the Richmond Wine Collective, a shared winery space housing multiple natural winemakers under one roof. As of 2016, all fruit Diaz sources is grown organically. This wine contains only naturally occurring sulfites.

The wine's bright acidity and low tannin make it a flexible table wine. Serve slightly chilled alongside roast chicken with herbs, lamb merguez, or a charcuterie board with dry-cured sausage. It also works well with dishes that have a touch of spice, where heavier reds would overpower.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

International Popular Wine

Noel Diaz founded Purity Wine in 2013, beginning production in a space on Treasure Island in San Francisco Bay. His background was in restaurant hospitality, and he completed the WSET Level 3 and the Court of Master Sommeliers Level 1 certified exam in 2011 before transitioning into winemaking full-time. By 2016, all fruit he sourced was grown organically.

In 2017, Purity Wine relocated to a warehouse in the Marina Bay district of Richmond, California, where Diaz established the Richmond Wine Collective — a shared production facility currently housing around 18 independent natural winemakers who share equipment and assist each other through harvest. In 2018, the adjacent office space was converted into The Study, a natural wine bar and bottle shop open to the public.

Diaz's approach centers on whole cluster fermentation, native yeast, carbonic or semi-carbonic maceration techniques, and zero added sulfites. He sources grapes from organically farmed vineyards across multiple California counties including Nevada, Calaveras, Mendocino, and Contra Costa. The Purity x Primal red is produced and bottled at the Richmond facility, with fruit sourced from Oakstone Vineyard in Nevada County.

Wine region

Sierra Foothills, USA

Nevada County sits in the northern reaches of the Sierra Foothills AVA, a vast appellation established in 1987 spanning eight California counties along the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada. Vineyards in Nevada County are rarely found below 2,000 feet elevation. The terroir is classically mountainous, with rocky, granite-based soils that are dry and free-draining. Grapes grown on these soils tend to be small and thick-skinned due to limited water access, producing concentrated, structured fruit.

The climate is Mediterranean with a significant diurnal temperature shift: hot days give way to cold nights as alpine air descends from the Sierra Nevada each evening. This extended, cool ripening period allows grapes to develop varietal character while retaining fresh acidity. The Sierra Foothills AVA as a whole supports over 150 grape varieties, with Zinfandel historically dominant in the southern sub-appellations. Nevada County, by contrast, leans toward Rhône varieties, Syrah, and other varieties that benefit from higher elevation and cooler growing conditions.
