Tasting notes

Carbonic maceration on a pink-skinned grape like Pinot Gris produces something genuinely unusual: tangerine and apricot fruit up front, a slight viscosity from the skin contact, and a saline, stony finish that keeps it from going soft. It is an accessible entry point into orange wine that does not require any convincing.

The Marigny Carbonic Pinot Gris is a skin-contact orange wine made from 100% Pinot Gris sourced from the northern and coast-leaning parts of the Willamette Valley AVA. Fruit is manually harvested and goes into whole cluster carbonic maceration for 6 to 14 days depending on the tank. After maceration, the wine is drained off, dug out, and pressed into a combination of stainless steel tanks (75%) and barrels (25%) to ferment dry. It is then racked back to stainless for bottling with no fining, no filtration, and a small addition of sulfur at bottling.

Pinot Gris is a pink-skinned mutation of Pinot Noir, and carbonic maceration pulls color and phenolic grip from those skins without the heavy tannin extraction of a long maceration. The result sits in a range between white and orange wine: copper-toned, slightly viscous, with aromas of stone fruit, tangerine peel, and a saline edge. It drinks well with a light chill.

Andrew Young sources from established vineyard sites farmed with organic practices in the northern Willamette Valley. Vineyards in this part of the valley sit on a mix of volcanic Jory soils and marine sedimentary Willakenzie soils, lending the wine its mineral backbone. Young uses only native yeasts and keeps additions to a minimum throughout the process.

The Marigny label was created by Young in 2018 as a distinct entity within his broader St. Reginald Parish project, focused on easy-drinking, low-intervention styles. This Carbonic Pinot Gris is one of the wines that defines the label's identity and has been made in some form since the early days of the project.

The saline, stone-fruit character makes this a natural match for briny foods: oysters, clams, or any lightly dressed seafood. It also works well alongside Middle Eastern and North African dishes where apricot, preserved lemon, or spiced grain appear. Hard, aged cheeses with a nutty quality hold up to the phenolic grip of the skin contact.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

St. Reginald Parish

Andrew Reginald Young left a career as a drummer in a Louisiana-rooted Texas rock band and immersed himself in the Willamette Valley wine scene around 2007. He launched St. Reginald Parish and made his first wines around 2015. The winery name combines his middle name, Reginald, with his childhood New Orleans neighborhood, St. Tammany Parish. In 2018, Young partnered with Adam Shearer and Benji Wagner to spin off a subset of his wines into The Marigny, a label named after the Faubourg Marigny neighborhood in New Orleans known for its live music.

Young sources all fruit from established vineyard sites in the northern and coast-leaning parts of the Willamette Valley, working with growers whose vineyards are farmed using organic practices. Vineyards associated with The Marigny are managed with cover crops including native flowers, edible greens, and root vegetables. The winery operates out of McMinnville, Oregon.

Young ferments with native yeasts only and keeps cellar additions to a minimum across all his wines. For the Carbonic Pinot Gris, whole clusters go into tank for 6 to 14 days of carbonic maceration before the wine is drained, pressed, and split between stainless steel (75%) and barrels (25%) to finish fermentation dry. It is racked to stainless before bottling with no fining or filtration, and a small sulfur addition at bottling.

Wine region

Willamette Valley, USA

The Willamette Valley stretches roughly 150 miles from the Portland area south toward Eugene, flanked by the Coast Range to the west and the Cascade Mountains to the east. This geography creates a protected, cool-climate corridor with long growing seasons, warm days, and cool nights that allow grapes to develop flavor while retaining acidity. The Coast Range absorbs much of the Pacific moisture, producing a rain shadow effect over the valley floor. The Van Duzer Corridor, a gap in the Coast Range south of McMinnville, channels marine winds into the valley and creates meaningful mesoclimate variation between northern and southern growing areas.

The Willamette Valley contains 11 nested sub-appellations, the most established being Dundee Hills, Yamhill-Carlton, Chehalem Mountains, Ribbon Ridge, McMinnville, and Eola-Amity Hills. Soils vary significantly across the valley: volcanic Jory soils, derived from ancient basalt flows, dominate hillside sites above 300 feet and provide excellent drainage; Willakenzie soils, composed of sandy loam over marine sediments, are common in Yamhill-Carlton and surrounding areas; and windblown silts from the Missoula Floods cover lower valley floors. Pinot Noir is the dominant grape, but Pinot Gris has been planted in the valley since the mid-1960s and remains one of its most important white varieties.
