Tasting notes

Carbonic maceration on 130-year-old, self-rooted vines in decomposed sandy soils produces a wine that is simultaneously deep in color and lifted in character — dark fruit and dried herbs with a savory, almost charcuterie-like finish. The Alicante Bouschet brings inky pigment while the old-vine Carignan delivers structure and grip without heaviness at just 13% ABV.

This wine comes from a single field-planted block in Alexander Valley, Sonoma County, with vines over 130 years old. The block is an original co-planting of Carignan (85%), Alicante Bouschet (10%), Zinfandel (4%), and Palomino (1%) growing in decomposed sandy soils. Those soils make it impossible for phylloxera to survive, so the vines remain on their own rootstock — some of the last self-rooted vines in California.

Winemaker Chris Brockway uses full carbonic maceration. Whole clusters go directly from bin into two large concrete tanks, where a blanket of CO2 keeps the berries intact while native yeasts begin fermenting sugars from the inside out. This intracellular fermentation gradually breaks down pigment in the skins, staining the juice a vivid red before the berries ever split. Once fermentation is complete, the wine is pressed back into concrete and aged for eight months before bottling. No yeasts, bacteria, enzymes, or tannins are added at any stage; sulfur is kept to little or none at bottling.

Only 440 cases were produced in the 2017 vintage. The Alexander Valley AVA sits in northeastern Sonoma County along the Russian River corridor, with warm days, deep alluvial and sandy soils, and significant diurnal temperature swings that preserve acidity even at full ripeness. For Carignan from vines this old, that combination results in density without weight.

The savory, herb-driven character of this wine pairs well with rack of lamb, braised short ribs, or a charcuterie board anchored by cured meats and aged gouda. Its lifted acidity and moderate tannins also make it a natural match for dishes with tomato-based sauces, such as a slow-cooked lamb ragu or pizza with fennel sausage. Serve with a slight chill (around 58-60F) to bring out its freshness.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Broc Cellars

Broc Cellars was founded in 2002 by Chris Brockway, an Omaha native who moved through the restaurant world in Nebraska and the Pacific Northwest before relocating to California to study winemaking. He completed coursework at UC Davis and finished his oenology degree at Cal State Fresno — an education he describes as making him an expert in everything he does not use. After working at JC Cellars in Oakland, he launched Broc from a small industrial space in Berkeley's Gilman District in 2008. The project began as a négociant focused on organic or biodynamically farmed fruit from lesser-known California regions and varieties. It has since grown to more than 20 releases annually.

Broc sources grapes exclusively from organically farmed California vineyards. In 2021, Brockway took over farming operations at Fox Hill Vineyard in Mendocino County, a 60-acre site planted largely to Italian varieties, and purchased it outright in 2023. Fox Hill received CCOF organic certification in 2024. For the Old Vine Carignan, fruit comes from an Alexander Valley block with 130-plus-year-old self-rooted vines growing in decomposed sandy soils — a site Brockway helped preserve from replanting to Cabernet Sauvignon.

All Broc Cellars wines are made using spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts and bacteria only. Nothing is added during winemaking: no nutrients, inoculated yeast, bacteria, enzymes, powdered tannins, or fining agents. Sulfur is not added during fermentation or aging; a small amount may be used at bottling depending on the wine. The winery operates out of two warehouses in Berkeley and uses a mix of stainless steel, concrete tanks, neutral barrels, and clay vessels depending on the wine. The Old Vine Carignan is made via carbonic maceration in concrete, then aged in concrete for eight months before bottling.

Wine region

Alexander Valley, Sonoma County, USA

Alexander Valley is an AVA in the northeastern corner of Sonoma County, California, established in 1984. The valley runs roughly 25 miles along the Russian River from Cloverdale south toward Healdsburg, flanked by the Mayacamas Mountains to the east and lower coastal ridgelines to the west. It is the largest and most fully planted wine appellation in Sonoma County, with over 15,000 vineyard acres. The valley floor is dominated by deep, well-drained alluvial soils — loams and sandy loams deposited by the Russian River — which warm quickly in spring and drain readily after rain. In pockets where ancient river action left behind decomposed sandy deposits, phylloxera cannot establish, preserving some of the state's last self-rooted old vines.

Alexander Valley runs warm during the day, making it one of the hottest parts of Northern California by afternoon, but marine air moving north through the Petaluma wind gap and the Russian River valley creates a pronounced diurnal temperature swing each evening. Early morning fog from the Russian River also covers lower vineyard areas before burning off. This combination of heat accumulation and cool nights allows grapes to achieve full phenolic ripeness while retaining natural acidity. Cabernet Sauvignon dominates plantings, but the valley also supports old-vine Zinfandel, Carignan, and field blends from the pre-Prohibition era. The Alexander Valley AVA sits within the broader Northern Sonoma AVA.
