Mario Macciocca

Mario Macciocca Monocromo #3 Rosato 2022

Price: $28.00
Cloudy peach-coral with a faint orange tinge. The nose is aromatic and layered, with salty grapefruit, crushed strawberry, rose petal, apricot, and a light volcanic mineral note. On the palate, dry and textured, with bright acidity, citrus pith, pink peppercorn, and a long savory, mineral finish.
  • Style: Dry, medium-bodied rosé with texture and aromatic complexity; the brief skin maceration on Cesanese gives the wine more structure and aromatic depth than a simple direct-press rosé
  • Grapes & terroir: 100% Cesanese; biodynamic estate vineyards on red volcanic clay and limestone-marl soils at 380–400 meters on the slopes of Monte Scalambra, Piglio area, province of Frosinone, Lazio
  • Winemaking: Hand-harvested; brief skin maceration of 12–24 hours; spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel or concrete tanks; rested on fine lees; bottled unfined, unfiltered, and without added sulfites
  • Serving temperature & decanting: Serve at 54–57°F; no decanting needed; can also be served slightly warmer than a typical pale rosé, around 57°F, to allow the aromatic complexity to open
  • Pairing: Tonnarelli cacio e pepe (Roman pasta with pecorino and black pepper)
  • Similar to: Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo, skin-contact Grenache rosé from Sardinia, natural Pinot Noir rosé from the Loire

The soils are red volcanic clay and limestone-marl, with south and southwest exposures that provide a temperate, wind-sheltered microclimate. Produced by Mario Macciocca on four hectares of estate vines, the grapes are hand-harvested and undergo a brief skin maceration before spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts. Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Mario Macciocca

Mario Macciocca is a natural wine producer based in the Piglio area of Lazio, working four hectares of biodynamic vineyards on the slopes of Monte Scalambra along the Simbruini mountain chain in the province of Frosinone. His background is as unlikely as it is appealing: he was a professional footballer who played at national level in Italy, later studied physics without completing his degree, and worked as a barman at the historic La Palma club in Rome. Around 2000, he returned to his family's land and committed to making wine in the most natural way he could.

The four hectares are planted to roughly three hectares of Cesanese and one hectare of Passerina and Malvasia Puntinata. The Cesanese vineyards occupy parcels called Pila Rocca and Carmine, with south and west exposures that benefit from a sheltered, moderately temperate microclimate protected from the coldest winds by the surrounding mountains. Soils are red volcanic clay and limestone-marl at altitudes of around 380 to 400 metres. Farming is biodynamic throughout — no herbicides, no synthetic fertilisers, no pesticides, with copper and sulphur used sparingly for disease control.

The Monocromo range — the name suggests a single-colour, single-variety approach to winemaking — represents Mario's entry-level, everyday expression of Cesanese. Each cuvée in the Monocromo series (numbered rather than named) is a different expression of the grape: red, white, and rosé, all made with spontaneous fermentation, native yeasts, and aging in stainless steel or concrete without any oak influence. The wines are bottled unfined, unfiltered, and without added sulfites. Mario also makes more ambitious, single-parcel Cesanese cuvées, including the Civitella red, which is aged in large barrels.

Wine region

Lazio, Italy

The Cesanese appellations of Lazio occupy a compact zone in the foothills of the Simbruini and Ernici mountains in the province of Frosinone, southeast of Rome. Three DOC and DOCG designations cover the principal Cesanese growing areas: Cesanese del Piglio DOCG (the most prestigious), Cesanese di Olevano Romano DOC, and Cesanese di Affile DOC. Together they account for a modest total of around 250 to 300 hectares under vine — a very small footprint that reflects both the historical marginalisation of these wines and the growing but still limited number of producers working seriously with the grape.

The landscape is dramatic. The vineyards sit on hillsides and in wide mountain valleys at elevations ranging from around 300 to 500 metres, protected on several sides by the peaks of the Simbruini chain, which reach over 2,000 metres. This geography creates a sheltered microclimate — warm and sunny during the ripening season but with significant cooling at night — that is particularly well suited to Cesanese's tendency toward high natural acidity and complex aromatics. Soils vary across the zone but are predominantly red volcanic clay in the Piglio area, a reflection of the ancient volcanic activity of the Colli Laziali and the deeper geological heritage of central Italy.

Cesanese is an ancient variety with documented presence in the Lazio hills since at least the Roman period. It produces wines of unusual aromatic range — floral, fruity, and spiced — with naturally high acidity and moderate tannins that have led some critics to compare it to varieties like Sangiovese or even Nebbiolo when grown from low-yield old vines. For decades the variety was associated with semi-sweet, heavy, and undistinguished wines. A revival since the early 2000s, led by a small group of dedicated and biodynamically minded producers in Piglio and the surrounding communes, has demonstrated the variety's genuine potential for serious, terroir-driven natural wine.
