Tasting notes

Sumoll Blanc is one of the rarest white grapes in all of Catalonia, and twelve weeks of skin contact in clay amphorae pulls out real grip and texture without overwhelming the variety's natural citrus and dried-herb character. The lean, savoury finish and bright acidity make it far more versatile at the table than most orange wines at this price.

Metamorphika Sumoll Orange is a skin-contact wine made from 100% Sumoll Blanc, an exceedingly rare white grape native to the Tarragona province of Catalonia. Sumoll Blanc is genetically unrelated to the red Sumoll grape and was once widely planted across northeastern Spain before being displaced by more commercially viable varieties. Costador sources fruit from two parcels of 70-to-80-year-old bush vines planted on roughly three hectares of stony white clay calcareous soils in the Conca de Barberà DO.

Grapes are hand-harvested between mid and late September and sorted twice — once in the vineyard and once in the cellar. Half the harvest is kept whole-cluster; the other half is destemmed. The combined fruit macerates on skins for twelve weeks before spontaneous fermentation begins in clay amphorae ranging from 300 to 3,500 liters, using only indigenous yeasts. Fermentation runs four to six weeks, after which the wine spends approximately three months on lees with daily stirring at first, then weekly. It is then aged for four months in clay amphorae before being bottled unfiltered in Costador's signature wax-sealed clay vessels.

The result is amber-hued with notable texture from the extended skin contact. Expect grapefruit pith, dried apricot, orange zest, and dried herbs on the nose, with crisp acidity and a lean, savoury finish characteristic of the Sumoll Blanc variety. At 12% ABV the wine stays fresh and food-friendly despite its structural grip.

Joan Franquet farms organically and biodynamically across a single mountain in Conca de Barberà, working with vines ranging from 60 to 110 years old across soils of slate, clay, and limestone at elevations between 400 and 800 meters. The high diurnal temperature variation at altitude allows extended hang time while preserving natural acidity.

The pithy texture and savoury acidity work well alongside grilled white fish, roasted chicken with herbs, or a plate of aged manchego and cured Catalan charcuterie. It can also handle lightly spiced dishes — think roasted cauliflower with harissa or grilled shrimp with citrus. Serve slightly cool, around 55–58°F.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

Producer profile

Costador

Joan Franquet grew up in Priorat in a family of olive oil producers. After years of traveling and visiting wine estates, he became a sommelier in 2009 and turned his attention to Conca de Barberà, where his partner is from. He gradually acquired old organic vineyards and founded Costador, teaching himself viticulture and winemaking through direct experience on his own estate.

Costador farms a single mountain in Conca de Barberà using organic and biodynamic practices. The vineyards range from 60 to 110 years old and span multiple soil types — slate, clay, and limestone — at elevations between 400 and 800 meters. Franquet works with indigenous Catalan varieties including Sumoll Blanc, Sumoll Negre, Macabeu, Trepat, and Garnatxa. Harvesting is done by hand with rigorous sorting in both vineyard and cellar.

The Metamorphika line is vinified entirely in clay: fermentation and aging take place in terracotta amphorae, and finished wines are bottled unfiltered in wax-sealed clay vessels. Franquet uses only wild and autochthonous yeasts. No fining. Minimal or no added sulfites across the range.

Wine region

Catalunya, Spain

Conca de Barberà is a DO located in the northern part of Tarragona Province in central Catalonia, situated within the river valleys of the Francolí and Anguera. Vineyards climb from roughly 350 to 900 meters in elevation, with limestone-dominant soils on the valley floors and slate-rich soils in the Serra de Prades hills above. The continental-influenced Mediterranean climate brings warm, dry summers and cold nights, with significant diurnal temperature swings that help grapes retain acidity over a long growing season.

The appellation authorizes both Sumoll Blanc and Sumoll (the unrelated red variety) among its permitted grapes, alongside Trepat, Parellada, Macabeu, and Garnatxa. Conca de Barberà was historically a source of base wine for Cava production, and most fruit was sold to large cooperatives. A younger generation of small producers has shifted focus toward single-vineyard, native-variety still wines. Costador's vineyards in this appellation sit on stony white clay calcareous soils at altitude, farmed without synthetic inputs.
