Tasting notes

Two Muscats whole-bunch macerated separately — Petits Grains in steel for aromatic lift, Alexandrie in sandstone amphora for silky texture — produce a wine that is floral and spiced at once, dry but with layers of orange peel, ginger, and quince. At under 11% ABV and from a heat-decimated 2019 harvest that wiped out over half the crop, what survived here is concentrated and alive.

Luminescence is a skin-contact white from François-Xavier Dauré of Domaine Lampyres, made in Espira-de-l'Agly in the Agly Valley of Roussillon. The 2019 blend is Muscat à Petits Grains, Muscat d'Alexandrie, and Macabeu grown on organically farmed vines in the eastern Roussillon. The wine is classified as Vin de France, and comes in under 11% ABV. Alcohol is low because the 2019 growing season was brutal: a late-June heat event pushed temperatures to 48°C (118°F), destroying more than half the potential crop in the eastern Roussillon. What survived produced concentrated, intense fruit.

Each grape variety was whole-bunch macerated separately. The Muscat à Petits Grains spent one month on skins in stainless steel to preserve its herbal and citrus aromatics. The Muscat d'Alexandrie underwent one month of skin contact in sandstone (grès) amphora, softening its tannins and adding textural weight. Only naturally occurring indigenous yeasts were used for fermentation. The wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered with a minimal addition of sulfur.

The resulting wine is cloudy gold with a faint pink tint — an orange wine in style, dry on the palate but deeply aromatic. Expect orange peel, spiced quince, ginger, lime zest, and a stony, mineral finish. The skin contact gives structure without heaviness; the acidity is bright and persistent.

Luminescence has been one of the domaine's two flagship cuvées since its inaugural 2016 vintage, when just 600 bottles were produced in FX's garage. The 2019 is the last vintage made while FX was simultaneously working at Matassa, giving it a particular historical significance within the Lampyres catalog.

The wine's spice and citrus notes work well with North African dishes — chicken tagine with preserved lemon, lamb merguez, or spiced carrot salads. Aged cheeses with some funk, like a washed-rind tomme or a semi-aged manchego, hold up to the skin-contact tannins. It also pairs well with dishes built around ginger, turmeric, or saffron.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Domaine Lampyres

François-Xavier Dauré, known as FX, is the fourth generation of his family to grow grapes in and around Espira-de-l'Agly. The family's entire production had historically gone to the local cooperative. Starting in 2008, FX began working with other vignerons in Roussillon to gain hands-on winemaking experience. In 2015 he joined New Zealander Tom Lubbe at Domaine Matassa, and simultaneously took over full control of the family domaine and began converting its 16 hectares to organic farming.

While working full-time at Matassa, FX farmed his own vines before dawn using a headlamp. Friends began calling him a 'lampyre' — the French word for firefly — and the name stuck. Domaine Lampyres produced its inaugural vintage in 2016: just 600 bottles of two cuvées, Anima and Luminescence, made in FX's garage. By 2018 he had converted a small barn into a proper cellar and expanded the range. In 2022 he converted an old farmhouse into a larger cellar, and the domaine has grown to approximately 17 hectares and around 20,000 bottles across 12 cuvées.

2019 was FX's last vintage working at Matassa. It was an extreme year across the eastern Roussillon: temperatures reached 48°C (118°F) at the end of June, causing sunburn damage that destroyed more than 50% of the region's potential crop. The wines FX produced from what remained showed character, balance, and tension. Across the domaine's range, farming is organic; fermentation uses only naturally occurring indigenous yeasts; and wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered with minimal added sulfur.

Wine region

Roussillon, France

Roussillon occupies the far southwestern corner of France, bordered by the Pyrenees to the south and west and the Mediterranean to the east. The region sits within the Pyrénées-Orientales department and has a strong Catalan cultural identity. The climate is among the hottest and driest in France, with the Tramontane and Marin winds modulating temperatures throughout the growing season. The Agly Valley, running east to west through the northern part of Roussillon, is home to some of the region's most notable natural wine producers, including Domaine Matassa and Danjou-Banessy. The village of Espira-de-l'Agly sits at the valley's eastern end, where schist, gneiss, and clay-limestone soils intermix.

Roussillon produces wines under multiple appellations — Côtes du Roussillon, Côtes du Roussillon Villages, Maury, Rivesaltes, Banyuls, and Collioure — as well as under the broader Vin de France designation, which many natural producers prefer for the freedom it allows in blending and labeling. The region's soils vary dramatically: black schist dominates around Maury, grey-brown schist around Latour-de-France, gneiss and granite near Caramany, and clay-limestone mixes in the lower Agly Valley. Roussillon was historically known for its Vins Doux Naturels (sweet fortified wines from Muscat and Grenache), but demand for those styles collapsed in the second half of the 20th century. A younger generation of growers working organically has repositioned the region around dry, terroir-expressive wines.
