Tasting notes

Le Trame is a study in Sangiovese without compromise: no new oak, no additives, no appellation politics — just dense, high-altitude fruit from alberello-trained vines at 7,000 per hectare. The 2015 delivers black cherry, violet, and plum over a frame of firm, grainy tannins and lifted acidity that will continue to develop for years.

Le Trame comes from Podere Le Boncie, a three-hectare estate in the hamlet of San Felice, just north of Castelnuovo Berardenga in the southernmost tier of the Chianti Classico zone. The vineyard is planted at a high density of 7,000 vines per hectare, trained as bush vines (alberello), principally to Sangiovese with small interplanted rows of Colorino, Mammolo, Foglia Tonda, and Ciliegiolo. Soils here are a mix of silt, clay, and active limestone, which collectively contribute finesse and acidity to the wine.

Winemaker Giovanna Morganti ferments with indigenous yeasts in open-top wooden vats without temperature control. The wine is then aged in a combination of large botti and 500-liter barrels, all well-used, with no new oak. Elevage is long, with occasional racking, and the wine spends a minimum of six months in bottle before release. Total time from harvest to release is typically no less than 30 months.

Le Trame was formerly labeled as Chianti Classico DOCG, but Morganti exited the appellation starting with the 2011 vintage, declassifying to Toscana IGT rather than conform to consorzio regulations she felt favored large producers. The wine carries 14% ABV and is produced in approximately 1,000 cases annually.

The 2015 vintage shows medium ruby color with aromas of black cherry, red cherry, violet, and plum. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, grainy tannins and medium-plus acidity. This is a structured wine that opens with air and rewards patience in the cellar.

A natural with Florentine-style bistecca, braised wild boar, or lamb shoulder with rosemary. The firm tannins and high acidity also stand up well to aged Pecorino Toscano and pasta with hare ragu. Decant at least one hour before serving.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

Producer profile

Podere le Boncie

Podere Le Boncie is located in the hamlet of San Felice, a few minutes north of Castelnuovo Berardenga near Siena. The estate was established by Giovanna Morganti, who trained as an oenologist and worked in the mid-1980s for San Felice wines on a project cataloguing roughly 300 traditional Tuscan grape varieties sourced from old vineyards across the region. Her father, Enzo Morganti, was an oenologist who championed Sangiovese and Tuscan native varieties decades before the international consultant era.

When her father gave her a small farm with olive groves called Le Boncie, Giovanna added a vineyard planted with selections from her earlier research: Sangiovese as the primary variety, alongside Ciliegiolo, Colorino, Foglia Tonda, Mammolo, and Prugnolo. The vineyard covers three hectares and is planted at 7,000 vines per hectare, trained to alberello (bush vine), a high-density, labor-intensive system traditional in Tuscany. Vineyard work follows biodynamic principles; harvesting is by hand.

In the cellar, Morganti ferments with indigenous yeasts in small open-top wooden vats without temperature control. The wine ages in a combination of large botti and 500-liter used barrels, with no new oak at any stage. Starting with the 2011 vintage, she exited the Chianti Classico DOCG and began labeling her wines as Toscana IGT, a decision made in response to consorzio rule changes she felt favored large commercial producers over small estates.

Wine region

Tuscany, Italy

Tuscany's Chianti Classico zone occupies the hills between Florence and Siena, spanning eight communes including Castellina, Gaiole, Greve, Radda, and portions of Castelnuovo Berardenga. Vineyard elevations range from approximately 300 to 600 meters. The climate is broadly continental: cold winters, hot dry summers, and diurnal temperature swings that help preserve Sangiovese's characteristic acidity and aromatic complexity.

Castelnuovo Berardenga sits at the extreme south of the Chianti Classico zone and is the warmest of the appellation's communes. Soils in this area are dominated by alberese (compact limestone) and galestro (schistous clay shale), with some tuff and clay. Alberese soils retain heat and produce structured, muscular wines with dark fruit and serious tannins. The region is governed by the Chianti Classico DOCG for most producers, but several independent estates, including Podere Le Boncie, declassified to Toscana IGT after disputes with the consorzio. Sangiovese is the dominant grape throughout, supplemented by native varieties such as Colorino, Ciliegiolo, and Mammolo.
