Tasting notes

Two grapes that rarely leave Hungary meet on a single extinct volcano — Juhfark's fierce acidity and Hárslevelű's floral, honeyed lift pull in opposite directions and the tension between them makes the wine feel alive. The porous basalt soils of Somló push a salty, flinty mineral thread through every sip that no amount of winemaking intervention could replicate.

Foam Vulkan Somló is a pétillant naturel made from Hárslevelű and Juhfark grown on the steep volcanic slopes of Somló Hill in northwestern Hungary. The vines are 35 to 60 years old and root into sandy and loam topsoil over a basalt and volcanic tuff subsoil — the remnant of an extinct volcano that rises 432 meters from the Pannonian plain. Meinklang holds Demeter biodynamic certification for this vineyard.

The wine is made using the ancestral method: fermentation begins in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts, and the wine is bottled with approximately 10 grams of residual sugar to finish fermentation in the bottle. It is unfined, unfiltered, and sealed under crown cap. A small amount of sulfur is added at bottling. Alcohol comes in at 10.5% ABV.

In the glass it pours hazy and pale yellow. The nose leads with elderflower, lemon, and green apple, backed by a faint yeasty note from the in-bottle fermentation. The porous volcanic basalt soils of Somló drive a distinct stony minerality through the palate, with bright, grippy acidity typical of Juhfark.

Meinklang's main estate is in Pamhagen, Burgenland, Austria, within the UNESCO-protected Neusiedlersee National Park. Their Somló parcel was reclaimed by the Michlits family after the fall of communism — it had been separated from the family farm when the post-WWI border placed the village of Pamhagen in Austria.

The high acidity and fine bubbles make this a strong match for fried foods — tempura vegetables, fried chicken, or fish and chips. It also works well alongside raw or lightly cured fish, oysters, and fresh goat cheese. Hungarian cold cuts and smoked pork are a natural pairing given the wine's regional roots.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

Producer profile

Meinklang

Meinklang is a Demeter-certified mixed farm operated by the Michlits family in Pamhagen, a village in Burgenland on the Austrian-Hungarian border, situated within the UNESCO World Heritage Site of National Park Neusiedlersee. The parents, Anneliese and Werner Michlits Senior, began organic farming on 60 hectares in the late 1980s and converted to biodynamic practices in 2001, achieving Demeter certification in 2003. The fall of communism in Hungary opened up land for purchase, and the estate expanded rapidly across both sides of the border to roughly 2,500 hectares. The three Michlits brothers — Werner, Hannes, and Lukas — each oversee a distinct part of the operation: Werner manages the vineyards alongside his wife Angela who handles winemaking, Hannes runs grain cultivation, and Lukas tends the livestock.

The farm functions as a closed agricultural organism. A herd of over 300 Angus cattle provides manure-based fertilizer for the vineyards, and ancient grains including spelt, einkorn, and farro are cultivated alongside grapes and fruit orchards. The Somló parcel was historically part of the family's land before WWI, when the post-war border adjustment placed Pamhagen in Austria, forcing them to abandon the Hungarian vineyard. The family reclaimed the plot after 1989. On the Somló slope, 35 to 60-year-old Hárslevelű and Juhfark vines are grown biodynamically on sandy loam topsoil over volcanic basalt subsoil.

In the cellar, all Meinklang wines undergo spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts. The Foam Vulkan is made via the ancestral method: partial fermentation in stainless steel followed by bottling with approximately 10 grams of residual sugar, allowing fermentation to complete in the bottle. The wine is unfined, unfiltered, and bottled under crown cap with a minimal sulfur addition. No reverse osmosis, chaptalization, or oak chips are used. Alcohol is 10.5% ABV.

Wine region

Somló, Hungary

Somló sits in northwestern Hungary within Veszprém County, built entirely on a single isolated extinct basalt volcano. Somló Hill reaches a summit of 432 meters, with vineyards planted on steep slopes between 220 and 260 meters in a full 360-degree ring around the hill. The Somló PDO covers 326 hectares of vines above the road circling the hill; the broader Nagy-Somló PDO expands to 559 hectares when the satellite volcanic outcroppings of Ság and Kis-Somló are included. The region is one of the smallest wine appellations in Hungary. Low humidity from constant breezes reduces disease pressure and makes organic viticulture practical across much of the hill.

Somló's soils are primarily basalt, basalt debris, and volcanic tuff on the upper slopes, transitioning to sand, clay, and loess mixed with volcanic minerals at the lower skirt of the hill. Decanter identifies Somló's basalts specifically as porous and mineral-rich, distinct from the harder basalts of Lake Balaton. These volcanic soils drive the region's hallmark stony, saline minerality and high natural acidity. White wines are the exclusive style here. Juhfark is the flagship variety — roughly 80 of the global 100 hectares planted to this grape are in Somló — and Hárslevelű, Furmint, and Olaszrizling round out the key plantings. Historically, Somló wines rivaled Tokaj in prestige and were reportedly favored by Habsburg royalty.
