Description

Egon Grüner Veltliner comes from Kremstal in Niederösterreich, Austria, produced by a family winemaking since 1868. The wine is made from 100% Grüner Veltliner grapes grown on sustainably farmed vineyards along the right bank of the Danube. The vines thrive in loess and conglomerate soils with east and south-facing exposures. Fermented in stainless steel tanks to preserve freshness, the wine undergoes no oak aging. The continental climate and mineral-rich soils contribute to the wine's characteristic acidity and peppery spice notes.

Tasting notes

On the palate, zesty citrus flavors combine with stone fruit, crisp acidity, and peppery spice. Light to medium body with a clean, refreshing mineral finish.

Food pairings

Pairs with asparagus, goat cheese salad, grilled vegetables, sushi, Vietnamese spring rolls, chicken schnitzel, Thai green curry, and fresh oysters with mignonette.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package gets returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee to be determined based on shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive, we are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to re-route a package after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancelling fee – the amount depends on how big the order is. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat/frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. please let us know should you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Producer profile

Egon

Egon represents a family winemaking legacy in Kremstal, Niederösterreich (Lower Austria), with continuous production since 1868. Located along the right bank of the Danube River across from the prestigious Wachau region, Egon's vineyards grow alongside some of Austria's oldest vines on prime south and east-facing slopes.

The estate specializes exclusively in Grüner Veltliner, Austria's signature white grape variety. Vineyards are planted in loess and conglomerate soils—the ideal combination for producing mineral-driven, aromatic wines with bright acidity and characteristic white pepper notes. These wind-deposited loess soils contribute exceptional minerality and flavor concentration.

Egon practices sustainable viticulture without synthetic chemicals, aligning with the natural and minimal-intervention winemaking movement throughout Europe's quality wine regions. The estate ferments Grüner Veltliner in stainless steel tanks to preserve fresh, vibrant character without oak aging, following traditional Austrian methods that reflect the Heurige tradition of young, fresh wines.

Egon bottles wine in convenient one-liter formats, offering value while maintaining quality. The continental climate of Kremstal, with warm days and cool nights moderated by the Danube, creates ideal conditions for Grüner Veltliner's signature balance of ripe fruit, high acidity, and aromatic complexity.

Wine region

Kremstal, Austria

Kremstal is a distinguished wine region in Niederösterreich (Lower Austria), situated along the Danube River between the renowned Wachau to the west and Kamptal to the north. The region takes its name from the historic town of Krems-an-der-Donau, a major commercial hub for Austrian wine. Kremstal gained Districtus Austriae Controllatus (DAC) status, Austria's protected designation system, recognizing its distinctive terroir and quality standards.

The region's diverse geology creates ideal conditions for Grüner Veltliner and Riesling production. Loess soils dominate the inland vineyards, providing excellent water retention and mineral content that translates to wine complexity. Closer to the Danube, limestone and clay soils contribute structure and aging potential. The river's moderating influence creates a favorable mesoclimate with warm days and cool nights, preserving acidity while allowing full ripeness.

Kremstal Grüner Veltliner displays classic Austrian character—citrus fruit, white pepper spice, and pronounced minerality with bright acidity. The wines balance freshness with depth, offering excellent food pairing versatility. Like Burgundy's Mâconnais region, Kremstal produces approachable yet terroir-driven wines that authentically express their limestone and loess origins.

Kremstal's winemakers increasingly embrace sustainable and organic viticulture, reflecting growing environmental consciousness throughout Austria's wine industry while maintaining the region's reputation for quality and authenticity.
