La Cabotte Côtes du Rhône Rouge Colline 2023

Regular price $25.00
LIGHT BODYFULL BODY
  • Style: Dry, full-bodied red with the ripe, spice-driven, garrigue-inflected character of the southern Rhône; the 2023 vintage shows more Syrah-forward notes than usual, with dark olive, black fruit, and pepper alongside the Grenache's red fruit warmth; immediate and approachable on release
  • Grapes & terroir: Grenache and Syrah; Massif d'Uchaux plateau, Mondragon; 165 metres elevation on chalky limestone, gravelly loam, and siliceous sandstone; south-southeast exposure; Demeter-certified biodynamic farming; single-block estate between Orange and Bollène
  • Winemaking: Destemmed; spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts; pumped over twice daily; 6–7 day post-fermentation maceration; aged in stainless steel to preserve fruit freshness; bottled unfined and unfiltered
  • Serving temperature & decanting: Serve at 61–64°F; no decanting required, though 15 minutes open in the glass helps; also works well slightly cool on a warm evening
  • Pairing: Daube provençale (Provençal beef stew with olives and herbs)

Tasting notes

Deep ruby with a vibrant, clear core. The nose is expressive and southern in character, with dark cherry, ripe plum, black olive, lavender, thyme, and a peppery spice note. On the palate, generous and warm, with rounded tannins, ripe fruit, and a long, dry finish with garrigue length.

Food pairings

Daube provençale, Moroccan lamb merguez, grilled duck breast, tapenade on crostini, Spanish chorizo, roast pork with herbs, mushroom pasta.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

La Cabotte

Domaine la Cabotte takes its name from the small stone shelters, called cabottes, that vineyard workers across the southern Rhône once used for storing tools and taking shade during the long, hot days of the growing season. The name reflects both the estate's physical setting and its connection to the working agricultural traditions of the region.

The story of the domaine begins in 1981 when Gabriel d'Ardhuy, a celebrated Burgundy vigneron, came across a largely abandoned 45-hectare property on the Massif d'Uchaux while cycling with his grandchildren. He purchased it despite already running a substantial estate in Burgundy. One of his seven daughters, Marie-Pierre, fell in love with the place and took on the task of rebuilding it, initially alone. Her husband Éric Plumet joined her in 1986 and the two have run the estate together since. The family's Burgundy ties remain: Marie-Pierre's sister Mireille operates Domaine d'Ardhuy in the Côte de Nuits.

Today, La Cabotte covers 30 hectares of vines in a single unbroken block on the Massif d'Uchaux, plus a small parcel of 1.5 hectares within the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. The estate holds Demeter biodynamic certification, first achieved in 2010, and Marie-Pierre and Éric follow the lunar calendar for all vineyard treatments, using horn manure in spring and horn silica during the growing season, alongside herbal preparations of nettle, yarrow, chamomile, oak bark, valerian, and dandelion. Yields are controlled through careful winter pruning, spring de-budding, and summer green harvests. Grapes are sorted twice before fermentation, and all wines ferment with indigenous yeasts and are bottled without fining or filtration.

Wine region

Rhône Valley, France

Côtes du Rhône is one of France's largest wine appellations. It stretches along the Rhône River from Vienne in the north to Avignon in the south. The appellation was officially created in 1937. Today it covers approximately 40,000 hectares across six departments: Rhône, Loire, Ardèche, Drôme, Gard, and Vaucluse.

The region divides into two distinct zones. The Northern Rhône runs from Vienne to Valence with steep, terraced vineyards on granite and schist soils. The Southern Rhône spreads across a wider valley from Montélimar to Avignon. Mediterranean climate dominates the south with hot, dry summers and the powerful mistral wind.

Red wines account for roughly 90% of Côtes du Rhône production. Grenache must comprise at least 40% of red blends. Syrah and Mourvèdre typically complete the blend. Other permitted varieties include Cinsault, Carignan, and Counoise. White wines use Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Marsanne, Roussanne, Bourboulenc, and Viognier.

Soils vary considerably across the appellation. The Southern Rhône features clay, limestone, sand, and the famous galets roulés—large rounded stones deposited by the ancient Rhône River. These stones retain heat during the day and release it at night. The Massif d'Uchaux sits northwest of Orange on a plateau of chalky limestone and gravelly loam at higher elevations.

Côtes du Rhône wines offer approachable expressions of Southern Rhône character. Reds typically show ripe red and black fruit, garrigue herbs, and peppery spice. The appellation provides a gateway to understanding the region's terroir without the price of crus like Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Many top producers in named villages also bottle Côtes du Rhône from younger vines or declassified fruit, delivering quality well above the appellation's modest reputation.
