Poggio delle Baccanti

Poggio delle Baccanti Chupa Cabra Frizzante 2022

Regular price $25.00
Pale amber-gold with a faint haze and gentle natural bubbles. The nose is fresh, citrus-driven, and herbal, with lemon zest, dried chamomile, stone fruit, and a mineral volcanic thread. On the palate, dry and lively, with light tannins, vibrant acidity, citrus brightness, and a clean, saline finish.
  • Style: Dry, lightly sparkling orange wine (frizzante); the seven-day skin maceration on Caprettone gives gentle texture and aromatic depth without deep color — the variety is notably neutral in terms of pigment release, so the wine is paler than many orange wines despite extended skin contact; the natural bottle re-fermentation produces a soft, delicate mousse rather than the aggressive effervescence of a conventional sparkling wine
  • Grapes & terroir: 100% Caprettone; organically farmed on volcanic soils on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius, Province of Naples, Campania; an ancient Vesuvian variety long confused with Coda di Volpe but confirmed as a distinct grape by DNA analysis in 2014; the volcanic tuff and ash soils give the wine its characteristic mineral, smoky, and saline character
  • Winemaking: Hand-harvested; seven-day skin maceration; fermentation in cement tanks with indigenous yeasts; bottle re-fermentation for natural effervescence; unfined, unfiltered, no added sulfites; cloudy in the glass from natural yeast sediment
  • Serving temperature & decanting: Serve well chilled at 46–50°F; no decanting; invert gently before pouring to incorporate the natural sediment, or pour carefully off it for greater clarity
  • Pairing: Pizza fritta napoletana (fried Neapolitan pizza dough)
  • Similar to: Skin-contact pét-nat from Campania, Col Fondo Prosecco, orange frizzante wines from Emilia-Romagna

Product description

Poggio delle Baccanti Chupa Cabra Frizzante 2022 is a naturally sparkling orange wine made from 100% Caprettone, a rare indigenous white grape grown exclusively on the volcanic slopes of Mount Vesuvius near Naples. The organically farmed grapes undergo seven days of skin maceration before fermentation in cement tanks, followed by bottle re-fermentation to achieve the wine's natural effervescence. Produced by Poggio delle Baccanti, the wine is bottled unfined, unfiltered, and without any added sulfites, making it one of the most characterful and low-intervention expressions in the winery's range. Campania, Italy.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Poggio delle Baccanti

Poggio delle Baccanti is a family winery at Sant'Antonio Abate on the Sorrento Peninsula, where the La Mura family has grown vines on the volcanic slopes above the Bay of Naples since the 1950s. The winery was established by the original Raffaele La Mura, himself the son of a winemaker, who started producing and selling wine with his brother Paolo before building his own operation focused on the traditional wines of the Neapolitan territory: Gragnano Rosso Frizzante and Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio in its white and red expressions.

What has defined the winery across three generations is an unbroken commitment to the indigenous grape varieties of the region and a refusal to compromise on farming. The La Mura family describes their approach as a "pact with the earth" — a phrase that captures both the organic certification they maintain across all vineyards and the deeper principle that the volcanic terrain of the Sorrento Peninsula and the slopes of Vesuvius should be farmed with care and respect rather than extracted from. No synthetic inputs enter the vineyard. Everything is hand-harvested, since the steep volcanic terrain makes mechanization impossible in any case.

The Chupa Cabra Frizzante is one of the most distinctive wines in the range precisely because of its grape: Caprettone, one of the rarest white varieties on Vesuvius, only formally recognized as a variety distinct from Coda di Volpe in 2014. That the La Mura family was producing a varietal Caprettone sparkling wine before many producers had even distinguished the variety shows the depth of their connection to the local viticultural heritage. The wine is made with skin contact, cement tank fermentation, and natural bottle re-fermentation — as hands-off as winemaking gets, with no fining, no filtration, and no added sulfites of any kind.

Wine region

Campania, Italy

Mount Vesuvius sits at the center of a viticultural zone unlike any other in Italy. The volcano, still considered active, rises roughly 4,200 feet above the Bay of Naples and is surrounded on its lower slopes by a patchwork of terraced vineyards, olive groves, and small agricultural plots that have been farmed continuously since at least Roman times. The soils here are primarily volcanic tuff, black basalt, and mineral-dense ash deposits that make the land extraordinarily fertile and distinctly mineral in character, with excellent drainage and high potassium content.

Caprettone is one of the rarest and most site-specific varieties to call these slopes home. For most of the twentieth century, it was grown intermixed with Coda di Volpe — a different variety — and frequently misidentified, with many farmers unaware they were cultivating distinct grapes. It was not until DNA analysis confirmed Caprettone's separate identity that it began to receive recognition in its own right. In 2014 it was formally registered in Italy's national grape variety catalogue, and in 2016 it was included as a primary variety in the Vesuvio DOC regulations. The vine's name is thought to derive from the Italian capra (goat), either in reference to goat farmers who historically cultivated it or to the distinctive cone-shaped grape clusters that can resemble a goat's beard.

The Vesuvio DOC covers the slopes of the volcano across several communes in the Province of Naples, including the area around Sant'Antonio Abate where Poggio delle Baccanti is based. The combination of volcanic soils, intense Mediterranean sunlight, and the moderating influence of the Bay of Naples produces white wines from Caprettone that are aromatic, mineral-driven, and marked by a distinctive saline, smoky character directly tied to the geology beneath them.
