Tasting notes

The Cuvee Milo punches above its 160-case production with real structural depth: black currant, anise, and graphite over a fresh, juicy core. The Grenache Blanc from La Presa adds a counterpoint — warm-climate texture and tropical weight without oak weight. Two wines, two very different sides of Santa Barbara County terroir.

Press Gang Cellars is a small-production project run by Kyle and Savanna Knapp out of Lompoc, California. Kyle spent years working up to head winemaker at Stolpman Vineyards before launching this label in 2010. Both wines here are drawn from named vineyard sites in Santa Barbara County, made with a low-intervention approach in the cellar.

The Cuvee Milo Red Blend 2018 is a GSM composed of 47% Grenache Noir and 15% Mourvedre from La Certe Vineyard in the Los Olivos District AVA, plus 38% Syrah from Robert Rae Ranch on the eastern edge of the Sta. Rita Hills AVA. Robert Rae Ranch sits at approximately 800 ft elevation in weathered sandstone soils from the Vaquero formation on a north-facing slope exposed to coastal fog and marine winds. The vineyard is certified organic. Only 160 cases of Cuvee Milo were produced. On the nose: black currant, blueberry, cocoa powder, anise, and graphite with a hint of roasted meat. Fresh and bright on the palate with blue and black fruit at the core.

The La Presa Grenache Blanc 2017 comes from La Presa Vineyard, a gently sloped site overlooking the Santa Ynez River near the Old Mission Santa Ynez. The vineyard has been farmed by the Caldwell-Altman family since 1972. Grenache Blanc from warm-climate Santa Barbara County typically shows green and tropical fruit with medium-to-full body and moderate acidity. Press Gang has used concrete fermentation for their La Presa whites, which preserves freshness and texture without adding oak influence.

Santa Barbara County spans several distinct sub-AVAs. The Los Olivos District is a broad alluvial terrace with warm days, cool nights, and consistent fog patterns. The Sta. Rita Hills, located about 10 miles from the Pacific, is cooler and windier, with diatomaceous earth and sandstone soils that suit varieties requiring longer hang time and high natural acidity.

The Cuvee Milo works well alongside lamb chops, duck confit, or dishes with roasted mushrooms and herbs. The La Presa Grenache Blanc suits roasted chicken, grilled sea bass, or Moroccan-spiced preparations. Both wines are versatile enough for a shared table.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Returns Policy

If you are not satisfied with your purchase, please contact us at (424) 414-2040 or via e-mail at hello@primalwine.com between 9 am and 5 pm Pacific Standard Time, Monday through Sunday, we would like to understand and try to solve your concerns. We can offer refunds only as store credit.

Producer profile

Press Gang Cellars

Press Gang Cellars was founded by Kyle and Savanna Knapp in Lompoc, California. Kyle began his career working harvests in Santa Barbara County and spent one harvest in Western Australia before returning to work his way up to head winemaker at Stolpman Vineyards, where he worked on the natural and low-intervention program. He launched Press Gang in 2010 as his own label focused entirely on small-batch Santa Barbara County wines.

Press Gang sources fruit from a network of named vineyard sites across the county, emphasizing growers aligned with organic and sustainable farming. The Robert Rae Ranch, source of the Syrah in Cuvee Milo, is certified organic. La Presa Vineyard has been farmed by the same family since 1972. Press Gang follows SIP certification standards as a baseline for vineyard sourcing and applies organic vineyard practices across their program.

Winemaking at Press Gang is explicitly minimalist. Kyle has stated a low-intervention approach in the cellar, and concrete fermentation has been used for the La Presa white wines to maintain freshness and texture. Production across individual wines is extremely limited — Cuvee Milo had 160 cases in the 2018 vintage, and most Press Gang wines fall well under 60 cases per release.

Wine region

Santa Barbara County, USA

Santa Barbara County sits in the southernmost portion of California's Central Coast, defined by a series of east-west trending mountain ranges and valleys. The Santa Ynez Valley AVA runs inland from the coast as a long corridor where marine influence decreases from west to east, allowing a wide range of grape varieties to thrive. The Los Olivos District, a sub-AVA within the Santa Ynez Valley, occupies a broad alluvial terrace between the Purisima Hills and the western flank of Happy Canyon. It has uniform topography, warm days, cool nights, and consistent morning fog patterns.

The Sta. Rita Hills AVA lies at the western end of the Santa Ynez Valley, approximately 10 miles from the Pacific Ocean. Afternoons bring strong marine winds that slow ripening and extend hang time, producing grapes with high natural acidity and pronounced savory character. Soils here include diatomaceous earth, fossilized marine sediment, and weathered sandstone — notably the Vaquero formation, which underlies the Robert Rae Ranch site used for the Syrah in Cuvee Milo. Elevations on the ranch reach approximately 800 ft. The region is best known for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, but Syrah from its cooler eastern reaches delivers notable structure and pepper-driven aromatics.
