Tasting notes

Malvasia rarely gets this treatment: spontaneous fermentation, no additions, a brief skin contact pass that gives the wine texture without heaviness. The result is aromatic and direct, with stone fruit and fresh herbs pulling in one direction and a faintly saline, mineral finish pulling in the other.

Bianco Malva is a 100% Malvasia from Cantina Indigeno's organically farmed vineyards around Montorio al Vomano in the Teramo province of Abruzzo, about 8 kilometers from the Adriatic coast. The vines average 30 years old and grow on calcareous clay soils. Fermentation is spontaneous with indigenous yeasts, and the wine sees a brief period of skin contact that adds texture without pushing it into orange wine territory.

The wine is unfined, unfiltered, and made without temperature control. No sulfur or other additions are used. Cantina Indigeno keeps alcohol deliberately low across their range, and this Malvasia comes in under 12% ABV, preserving freshness and drinkability over weight.

Malvasia is a naturally aromatic variety, and in this minimal-intervention style the grape's character comes through directly: stone fruit, ripe pineapple, and a hint of dried herbs on the nose, with a soft, slightly round texture on the palate and a clean, lightly saline finish. The brief skin contact contributes grip without tannin that dominates.

Works well with grilled fish, briny shellfish like clams or mussels, and light pasta dishes dressed with olive oil and fresh herbs. The wine's aromatic character and low alcohol also make it a good match for fresh cheeses like fior di latte or light vegetable antipasti.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Cantina Indigeno

Cantina Indigeno was founded in 2016 by four friends: Nicola Reginaldi, Alfredo Giugno, Fabio Petrella, and Loreto Lamolinara. Before starting the winery, the group worked together in the craft beer industry, opening a microbrewery in 2013. The transition into wine was influenced by their friendship with the Abruzzo natural wine producer Lammidia. Nicola Reginaldi, a sommelier since 2013 and former owner of a wine bar in Teramo, shaped the winery's approach to natural winemaking.

The winery is located in Montorio al Vomano in the Teramo province, roughly 8 kilometers from the Adriatic coast. Cantina Indigeno manages 9 hectares of organically certified vineyards. Their vines average 30 years old and grow on stony calcareous clay soils. The core varieties they work with are Montepulciano and Trebbiano, with additional work in Malvasia, Pecorino, Montonico, and Muscat.

Winemaking at Cantina Indigeno is built around non-intervention: spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, no temperature control, no fining, no filtration, and no sulfur or other additions. Several wines in their range see skin contact, including the Bianco Malva. The first vintage in 2016 produced around 5,000 bottles; by 2018 production had grown to approximately 25,000 bottles, driven largely by export demand from the United States and Japan.

Wine region

Abruzzo, Italy

Abruzzo runs along the central Adriatic coast of Italy, bordered by the Apennine Mountains to the west and the Adriatic Sea to the east, covering four provinces: Teramo, Pescara, Chieti, and L'Aquila. The Teramo province in the north holds some of the most distinctive vineyard land in the region. Vineyards in the Colline Teramane (Teramo hills) sit at elevations up to 700 meters on calcareous clay soils, with the Adriatic moderating coastal sites and the Gran Sasso massif influencing inland temperatures. The climate is Mediterranean near the coast and more continental inland, with meaningful diurnal temperature variation at higher elevations that helps retain acidity in white grapes.

Abruzzo has two DOCGs: Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Colline Teramane and Terre Tollesi/Tullum. The main DOC designations include Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, Trebbiano d'Abruzzo, Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo, and Controguerra. Montepulciano and Trebbiano are the dominant varieties by planting, but a growing natural wine movement centered in the Teramo hills has drawn international attention to indigenous white varieties including Pecorino, Malvasia, Montonico, and the rare Cococciola. Producers like Emidio Pepe and Edoardo Valentini defined Teramo's identity for decades; a newer generation working under a minimal-intervention philosophy has extended that work in a different direction.
