Tasting notes

This wine comes from 120 to 140-year-old own-rooted vines growing in pure sand — a soil type that kept phylloxera out and kept these vines alive long past their counterparts elsewhere in California. The co-fermentation of whole-cluster Carignan and Mataro with de-stemmed Zinfandel, followed by 13 months in neutral French oak, produces a wine with dusty tannins, dark fruit, dried herbs, and enough acid backbone to stay lively on the palate.

Above & Below is a co-fermented field blend of equal parts Carignan, Mataro, and Zinfandel sourced from two sustainably farmed vineyards in Oakley and Antioch, Contra Costa County. The vines are 120 to 140 years old, own-rooted and head-trained in up to 40 feet of deep Delhi sandy loam — a soil type that prevented phylloxera from ever taking hold here, leaving some of the oldest surviving vines in California intact on their original rootstock.

All three varieties were hand-harvested on September 9, 2019. Zinfandel was de-stemmed and co-fermented alongside whole-cluster Carignan and Mataro in a 2-ton open-top fermenter. The fruit was foot-trodden to liberate juice, then macerated at cellar temperature with native yeast fermentation kicking off within three days. Fermentation was managed with an initial pump-over followed by one to two daily punchdowns. After an 11-day maceration, the wine was pressed into neutral French oak barrique and aged for 13 months. Bottled unfined and unfiltered with 30ppm of sulfur at bottling. Only 98 cases were produced.

The name references the Hermetic principle of correspondence — as above, so below — and the winemakers frame the wine as a direct continuation of a tradition stretching back to Portuguese and Italian immigrants who settled the Sacramento Delta in the late 1800s, planting these same varieties in field blends and harvesting them together into a single cuvee. The farming is sustainable; no organic certification is confirmed for this specific vineyard source.

The wine's dusty tannins and bright acidity make it a natural match for grilled lamb chops, braised short ribs, or a dry-aged burger. Its earthy, herb-tinged profile also pairs well with hard aged cheeses like aged Manchego or Pecorino Romano. Charcuterie boards with cured meats — salami, coppa, dry chorizo — are a straightforward call.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Wonderwerk Co.

Wonderwerk Co. is the project of Issamu Kamide and Andrew Lardy, two friends who grew up together in Virginia and relocated to California separately before launching their wine label in Los Angeles. Andrew Lardy studied enology at Fresno State and worked at several wineries on California's Central Coast before becoming Head Distiller at Spirit Guild Distillery in downtown Los Angeles. Issamu Kamide studied brand management, earned a WSET Level 3 certification, and works in marketing and product innovation in the beverage industry. The label's name comes from the Wonderwerk Cave in South Africa, believed to contain evidence of the earliest known human cooking fire.

Wonderwerk produces wine at the Atelier des Savants Fous custom crush facility in Gilroy, California. The duo sources fruit from vineyards across the state, with sustainable farming as a minimum requirement for any vineyard partner. Their approach spans from straightforward low-intervention winemaking to experimental co-fermentations, piquettes, and botanical-infused wines. All wines are made without fining or filtration and are bottled with minimal sulfur additions. Andrew and Issamu are hands-on through every stage of production, including bottling.

Wine region

Contra Costa County, United States

Contra Costa County sits roughly 50 miles east of San Francisco, at the confluence of the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers. Its historic vineyard blocks are concentrated around the towns of Oakley and Antioch, planted on ancient alluvial sandbars. The defining soil is Delhi sandy loam — deep, free-draining sand underlain by a clay subsoil that retains just enough moisture to keep dry-farmed vines alive without irrigation. Because the phylloxera root louse cannot survive in sand, these blocks were never devastated by the epidemic that wiped out old-vine plantings across most of California, leaving own-rooted vines dating to the 1890s still producing today.

The climate is warm by day with strong afternoon winds that push inland through the Carquinez Strait, moderating temperatures and preserving acidity in the grapes. The dominant varieties planted historically are Zinfandel, Carignan, and Mataro (Mourvedre), typically grown as head-trained, dry-farmed vines in a co-planted field blend style introduced by Portuguese, Italian, and Spanish immigrants in the late 19th century. Contra Costa County was officially established as an AVA by the TTB on March 15, 2024. The region's traditional tasting profile — described historically as earthy, dusty, and leathery — reflects both the sandy terroir and the old-vine concentration of fruit grown under significant stress.
