Tasting notes

Pale straw yellow with greenish glints. The nose is aromatic and mineral, with white peach, ripe pear, citrus zest, aromatic herbs, almond, and a distinct volcanic stone note. On the palate, dry and medium-bodied, with fresh acidity, stone fruit, a clean bitter almond finish, and persistent mineral length.

  • Style: Dry, medium-bodied white with the characteristic mineral tension and aromatic complexity that Greco develops on volcanic soils; the grape's naturally high acidity and thick skin give the wine structure and the capacity to develop in bottle, while the volcanic terroir contributes a saline, stony quality that runs through the finish
  • Grapes & terroir: 100% Greco; organically farmed, dry-farmed, hand-harvested vines on volcanic soils on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius, Sorrento Peninsula, Province of Naples, Campania; no synthetic inputs of any kind; the volcanic ash-rich soils are mineral-dense and free-draining, producing low-yield, concentrated fruit
  • Winemaking: Spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts; stainless steel tanks for fermentation and aging; unfined, unfiltered; minimal sulfite additions at bottling only; no additives or cellar adjustments
  • Serving temperature & decanting: Serve at 48–52°F; no decanting required; the wine benefits from a few minutes in the glass to open up its aromatic complexity
  • Pairing: Spaghetti alle vongole (Italian pasta with clams)
  • Similar to: Greco di Tufo from Feudi di San Gregorio, Fiano di Avellino in a mineral style, Vermentino di Sardegna

Poggio delle Baccanti Campania Greco 2023 is a dry white wine made from 100% Greco, one of Campania's oldest indigenous white varieties, grown on organically farmed volcanic soils on the Sorrento Peninsula near Mount Vesuvius. The La Mura family, based in Sant'Antonio Abate in the Province of Naples, has farmed these slopes since the 1950s, working exclusively with local grape varieties. Grapes are hand-harvested, and Poggio delle Baccanti ferments with spontaneous indigenous yeasts in stainless steel, bottling the wine unfined and unfiltered with minimal sulfite additions. 12% ABV. Campania IGP.

Spaghetti alle vongole, Japanese steamed clams with yuzu, grilled branzino, fried mozzarella, grilled squid, caprese salad, risotto ai frutti di mare, baked sea bass.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Poggio delle Baccanti

Poggio delle Baccanti is a small, family-run winery located at Sant'Antonio Abate in the Province of Naples, on the Sorrento Peninsula overlooking Mount Vesuvius. The estate is run by brothers Raffaele and Paolo La Mura, together with their cousins Giovanni and Raffaele, continuing a family winemaking tradition that began in the 1950s when their grandfather Raffaele La Mura — himself the son of a winemaker — founded the winery.

The La Mura family has made a deliberate commitment to the land they farm, expressing it through what they describe as a "pact with the earth": organic practices across all vineyards, no synthetic chemicals, dry farming wherever the terrain allows, and hand-harvesting at every plot. They work exclusively with indigenous Campanian varieties — Greco, Fiano, Falanghina, Aglianico, Piedirosso, Sciascinoso, Caprettone — and have no interest in international varieties, regarding the preservation of their local grape heritage as central to what they do.

In the cellar, intervention is kept to an absolute minimum. Fermentations are spontaneous, driven entirely by the native yeasts carried on the fruit from the vineyard. Wines are aged in stainless steel to preserve aromatic freshness and varietal character without any oak influence. All wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered, with only very small sulfite additions when judged strictly necessary. The production range covers the full breadth of the Campanian tradition: Gragnano Rosso Frizzante, Lacryma Christi Bianco and Rosso, and varietal wines from Greco, Fiano, Falanghina, Aglianico, and Primitivo, among others.

Three generations in, the winery remains entirely family-owned and operates on a small scale that allows the La Mura family to maintain direct control over every step from vineyard to bottle.

Wine region

Campania, Italy

The Sorrento Peninsula juts southward from the Bay of Naples between the Gulfs of Naples and Salerno, forming one of the most geologically dramatic wine landscapes in southern Italy. The peninsula is shaped by the same volcanic geology that defines the entire Campanian coast — the soils here are rich in volcanic tuff, basalt, and mineral-dense ash deposits from Vesuvius, which sits directly across the Bay of Naples to the north. Sant'Antonio Abate, where Poggio delle Baccanti is based, sits on the inland slopes of the peninsula at moderate elevation, facing Vesuvius across the bay.

The Mediterranean climate of the peninsula — hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters — is tempered by sea breezes from both flanks, the Tyrrhenian coast to the west and the Gulf of Salerno to the east. This dual coastal influence moderates daytime heat and extends the growing season, allowing Greco and other indigenous varieties time to ripen fully while retaining natural acidity. The volcanic soils drain efficiently, naturally regulating water stress without irrigation and concentrating flavors in the fruit.

Grape growing in this corner of Campania has been practised since at least the time of the ancient Greeks, who are believed to have introduced several varieties still grown here today, including Greco — a name that references those Greek origins directly. The peninsula's DOC, Penisola Sorrentina, covers red, white, and the famous naturally sparkling Gragnano wines made from Piedirosso, Aglianico, and Sciascinoso. White wines from the area draw on Falanghina, Greco, Fiano, and local varieties, with the volcanic soils giving all of them a mineral, saline character tied directly to the geology of the land.
