Tasting notes

Pale straw yellow with a delicate cloud of natural sediment and soft, gently persistent bubbles. The nose is fresh and lightly yeasty, with lemon sorbet, white flowers, green apple, and a mineral seashell note. On the palate, dry and light-bodied with bright acidity and a clean, citrus-edged finish.

  • Style: Dry, light-bodied pétillant naturel; the ancestral method produces a gentle, cloud-like effervescence rather than the persistent bead of Champagne-method wines; Trebbiano Modenese delivers fresh citrus and apple fruit with bright natural acidity; at 11% ABV it is light and approachable
  • Grapes & terroir: 100% Trebbiano Modenese; biodynamic vineyards on sandy clay and limestone soils rich in fossils at 250 metres in Castellarano, Emilia-Romagna; continental climate with some Mediterranean influence; 4,000 vines per hectare; all vineyard work done by hand; certified biodynamic since 2003
  • Winemaking: Native yeast fermentation; Metodo Ancestrale — bottled before fermentation is complete so the wine finishes in bottle, trapping natural CO2; unfined; unfiltered; minimal added sulfites (approximately 20 ppm); the wine retains light residual yeast sediment from bottle refermentation
  • Serving temperature & decanting: Serve well chilled at 43–46°F; no decanting; invert the bottle gently before pouring to rouse the sediment if desired, or leave upright and pour carefully to keep clarity
  • Pairing: Gnocco fritto (Emilian fried dough with cured meats)
  • Similar to: Pét-nat Muscadet from the Loire, Crémant d'Alsace, Col Fondo Prosecco

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Il Farneto

Azienda Agricola Il Farneto is an 8-hectare estate in Castellarano, positioned between the hills of Scandiano and Canossa in western Emilia-Romagna. It was founded in the mid-1990s by Marco Bertoni, who established the project with the goal of producing wines that reflected their specific terroir while contributing to sustainable agriculture in a region that had been dominated by industrial-scale production since the post-war decades. The estate began converting to biodynamic farming in 2003 and today carries full biodynamic certification.

The estate sits at approximately 250 metres elevation, surrounded by woodland and fossiliferous gullies — the ravines rich in fossil marine deposits that are characteristic of this part of the Apennine foothills. The proximity of this natural biodiversity to the vineyards is a deliberate feature of the estate's approach. Vineyards are planted at 4,000 vines per hectare, relatively dense for the region, and the average vine age is 15 to 20 years. The soils are sandy clay with limestone throughout, and all vineyard operations are performed by hand.

Winemaker Flavio Restani oversees both viticulture and cellar work. His approach relies entirely on native yeasts for fermentation and uses no fining agents or filtration. Where old large-format French barrels (up to 500 litres) are used, they are many years old and serve only to gently round and clarify the wines without imparting oak character. Sulfur is used in minimal doses only when necessary for transport stability.

The estate's range includes still and sparkling wines from indigenous varieties: Trebbiano Modenese, Spergola, Lambrusco Grasparossa, Marzemino, Malbo Gentile, and Malvasia. The wines are collectively named after the Rio Rocca, a local river known for the geological richness and wildness of its valley.

Wine region

Emilia–Romagna, Italy

Emilia-Romagna stretches across north-central Italy from the Po River plains in the north to the crests of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines in the south. It is one of Italy's most food-rich regions, home to Parmigiano-Reggiano, prosciutto di Parma, mortadella, balsamic vinegar of Modena, and a long tradition of filled pastas including tortellini and tagliatelle. Viticulture here is ancient, with evidence of vine cultivation dating to Etruscan and early Roman times.

The hillside zones — the colli, running along the southern edge of the Po plain — are where the most characterful wines are produced. The Colli di Scandiano e di Canossa DOC, where Il Farneto is located, covers the Reggiano hills around the town of Castellarano, south of Reggio Emilia. Soils in this area are a mix of sandy clay, limestone, and fossiliferous deposits laid down over geological time — the fossilised marine sediments give the hillsides an unusual mineral richness that translates directly into the wines. Elevations range from around 200 to over 400 metres across the zone, providing the thermal variation that preserves acidity in the grapes.

The regional climate is broadly continental, with cold winters, hot summers, and a moderate Adriatic influence in the eastern part of the region. The hills around Reggio Emilia benefit from cooling influences from the Apennines that moderate summer temperatures and extend the ripening season.

Emilia-Romagna's best-known wines are the Lambrusco family — frizzante and spumante reds made from several indigenous Lambrusco varieties across the provinces of Modena, Reggio Emilia, and Parma. Beyond Lambrusco, the region produces still and sparkling whites from Trebbiano Modenese and Spergola, as well as reds from Marzemino, Malbo Gentile, and Sangiovese (the dominant variety across the Romagna side of the region). A growing contingent of small producers has embraced natural and biodynamic approaches across all of these varieties.
