Tasting notes

Deep amber-orange with a warm copper core and natural haze. The nose is complex and dried-fruit-driven, with chamomile, candied orange peel, preserved peach, dried herbs, beeswax, and a thread of mineral limestone. On the palate, full-bodied and tannic, with bright acidity, long length, and a dry, saline finish.

  • Style: Dry, full-bodied orange wine with substantial structure; 240 days of skin maceration on Malvasia di Candia Aromatica, wine of genuine depth and grip, closer in weight and presence to a structured red than to a light orange wine; this is a serious, age-worthy wine that rewards a long time in the glass or a patient drinker; "Vej" means "old/ancient" in the local Parmense dialect and the name reflects the revival of an ancient winemaking tradition of extended white wine maceration in this corner of Emilia-Romagna
  • Grapes & terroir: 100% Malvasia di Candia Aromatica from organically and biodynamically farmed vines planted in 1989 and 2005 on Cretaceous soils, at 820–1,640 ft elevation; south-facing amphitheater exposure on the left bank of the Ceno River; certified organic since 2004
  • Winemaking: Hand-harvested; spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts only; 240 days (eight months) of skin maceration in cement tanks; aged in stainless steel; no temperature control; no fining, no filtration, no added sulfites; the maceration length varies by vintage based on grape ripeness and harvest conditions
  • Serving temperature & decanting: Serve at 60–64°F; decant 30–60 minutes — the wine opens considerably with air
  • Pairing: Culatello di Zibello (the prized aged cured ham from the Province of Parma)
  • Similar to: Dinavolo by Az. Agr. Denavolo, Radikon Ribolla Gialla Riserva from Friuli, skin-contact Malvasia from Friuli in a more extracted style

Podere Pradarolo Vej Bianco Antico 2022 is a dry orange wine made from 100% Malvasia di Candia Aromatica grown organically and biodynamically on the south-facing amphitheater slopes of Varano de' Melegari along the left bank of the Ceno River, Province of Parma, Emilia-Romagna. The vineyards sit between 820 and 1,640 feet on Cretaceous soils of clay, sandstone, siltstone, and active limestone. Podere Pradarolo gives the wine 240 days of skin maceration in cement tanks, followed by aging in stainless steel, with spontaneous fermentation using only indigenous yeasts. Bottled without fining, filtration, or any added sulfites. 12.5% ABV. Emilia IGT.

Culatello di Zibello, Japanese miso-glazed pork belly, aged Parmigiano-Reggiano, roast chicken with rosemary, braised lamb, mushroom risotto, saffron risotto, chicken liver pâté, aged Comté.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Podere Pradarolo

Podere Pradarolo is the estate of Alberto Carretti and Claudia Iannelli, located in Varano de' Melegari in the Province of Parma. The farm was purchased by the Carretti family in 1972, originally intended for prosciutto production. Alberto comes from a prominent cheesemaking family in the region, and Claudia spent years working in the international chemical industry. Neither arrived at winemaking through a conventional route — a fact that may help explain the radical independence of their approach.

The conversion to viticulture began in 1989, and the estate received organic certification in 2004. Of the 60 hectares in total, only 5 are planted to vines: three hectares established in 1989 and two more in 2005. The rest is given over to fodder crops and the dramatic badlands terrain of the Cretaceous hillside. The estate itself has deep historical roots: the 15th-century villa was once the seat of the Serravalle Podestà, and the private chapel dedicated to Saint Bernardino of Siena was added during restoration in the 1700s. The cellar is housed in what was originally a dairy barn.

Alberto's winemaking philosophy is built around a single conviction: that the ancient tradition of extended maceration for white wines, once common in this part of Emilia-Romagna, represents the truest expression of the Malvasia di Candia Aromatica grape and the estate's distinctive terroir. The Vej Bianco Antico is the flagship expression of this conviction — the number in its name (240 for the 2022 vintage) refers to the days of skin maceration, which Alberto adjusts vintage by vintage based on the ripeness and character of the harvest. No sulfites, no fining, no filtration: the wine stabilizes naturally when temperatures drop in winter.

The range also includes the Vej Metodo Classico (described as Italy's only orange sparkling wine made by the Champagne method), the Ex Alba Macerato from Trebbiano, the Velius Rosso from Barbera, and the Maty and Indocilis bottlings.

Wine region

Emilia–Romagna, Italy

Varano de' Melegari sits in the foothills of the Province of Parma, where the Ceno River descends from the Ligurian Apennines toward the Po plain. This corner of western Emilia-Romagna lies between two of Italy's most celebrated food and wine cultures — the city of Parma to the north, home of Prosciutto di Parma, Parmigiano-Reggiano, and Culatello di Zibello, and the coastal Ligurian hills to the southwest, whose marine breezes reach inland through the mountain passes and shape the microclimate of these valleys.

The geology here is genuinely unusual. The hills of Varano de' Melegari are built on Cretaceous-era marine sediments — ancient seabed material that was uplifted by the same tectonic forces that created the Apennines. The resulting soils combine clays, sandstones, purplish siltstones, and limestones in a complex layering that gives the wines grown on them a distinctive mineral character with active limestone content of around 12%. This geological base is quite different from the alluvial clay and silt of the Po plain, and more akin in character to the calcareous Apennine hillside terroirs associated with structural, long-lived wines.

The estate of Podere Pradarolo occupies a south-facing amphitheater on the left bank of the Ceno River, a formation that maximizes sun exposure while the valley's geography channels constant marine breezes inland through the night, creating significant day-to-night temperature swings. These conditions slow ripening, extend the aromatic development of the Malvasia di Candia Aromatica grape, and preserve the natural acidity that allows the wine to survive eight months of skin maceration without sulfur protection. The province of Parma has a long winemaking history that long predates its fame for cured meats and cheese — the Ceno and Taro valleys both have ancient viticultural traditions that modern producers like Podere Pradarolo are reviving.
