Tasting notes

Deep amber-gold with a warm, honeyed gloss. The nose is intense and layered, with rose petal, lychee, dried apricot, candied ginger, and hazelnut from the oxidative aging. On the palate, the wine is dry and full, with a long, spiced finish and a saline undercurrent balancing the richness.

  • Style: Dry, full-bodied oxidative white in a 500ml format; late-harvest noble rot fruit meets extended barrel aging without topping up, producing a wine where Gewürztraminer's intense aromatic character is woven through a framework of oxidative depth; high natural alcohol from the late harvest
  • Grapes & terroir: 100% Gewürztraminer; Bannwarth family vineyards, Obermorschwihr, Haut-Rhin, Alsace; loess, loam, and limestone soils; organically farmed; harvested 2020 with noble rot
  • Winemaking: Same-day direct press; brief oxidation before fermentation; spontaneous fermentation in fiberglass tanks over winter; racked in spring 2021; then 3.5 years in old barrels without topping up; no fining, filtration, or added sulfur at any stage
  • Serving temperature & decanting: Serve at 57–61°F; decanting for 30 to 45 minutes is recommended; the wine opens considerably with air and temperature; use a broad, generous glass
  • Pairing: Munster cheese
  • Similar to: Those familiar with late-harvest dry Gewürztraminer from Alsace or oxidative whites from Jura aged without topping up will find a reference point

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Anders Frederik Steen

Anders Frederik Steen and Anne Bruun Blauert are the couple behind one of the most closely followed natural wine projects in France. Both Danish, they settled permanently in Valvignères in the Ardèche in 2016, after Anders had already been making wine there since 2013. Before winemaking, Anders spent his career in Copenhagen's restaurant world as a trained chef turned sommelier, working at Noma, Relae, and Manfreds. At Manfreds he assembled one of the first natural wine lists in Denmark and worked as an importer, building relationships with producers across France, many of whom would later become collaborators or sources of fruit.

His first vintages in 2013 were made at the cellar of Gérald Oustric at Domaine Le Mazel in Valvignères, initially in partnership with the Jura winemaker Jean-Marc Brignot. When Brignot departed for Japan in 2015, Anders continued independently. He and Anne now farm around four hectares of their own vines in the Valgrand hillside area outside Valvignères, with varieties including Grenache Noir, Grenache Blanc, and others on clay-limestone soils. They also continue working with the Oustric family in Valvignères and with Stéphane and Régine Bannwarth in Obermorschwihr, Alsace, where Anders has a dedicated cellar space and vinifies the Alsatian fruit on site.

Anne Bruun Blauert, who trained as an architect, brings a distinct aesthetic sensibility to the project, reflected in the label designs and the literary wine names drawn from song lyrics, poetry, and personal reference. The approach in the cellar is consistent across the range: spontaneous fermentation, no additions of any kind, no fining, no filtration.

Wine region

Ardèche, France

The Ardèche wine region is located in southern France, covering the Ardèche department and extending into the northern Gard department. It sits on the western banks of the Rhône River, bridging the northern and southern Rhône vineyards. The region is known for its diverse landscapes and climates, making it ideal for vine growing.

Ardèche wines have a long history, with evidence of viticulture dating back to antiquity. The region produces a variety of wines under the IGP (Indication Géographique Protégée) Ardèche designation, which was formerly known as Vin de Pays. This classification covers red, white, and rosé wines. Notable grape varieties include Grenache, Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Gamay, the indigenous Chatus for reds, and Chardonnay and Viognier for whites. Other varieties like Sauvignon Blanc, Clairette, Grenache Blanc, Ugni Blanc, Marsanne, and Roussanne are also cultivated.

The Ardèche region is characterized by its varied terroirs, including the mountainous central west, the high plateaux of the Haut-Vivarais and Cévennes, the Bas-Vivarais plains, and the volcanic Coiron plateau. The climate is predominantly Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and mild winters. The Mistral wind from the north and sea breezes from the south influence the region's weather, contributing to sudden heavy rainfall in spring and autumn. Soils are typically limestone and sandstone, with pebbly, thin soils in vineyard areas that promote good grape concentration.

The production in Ardèche is dominated by cooperatives, which account for 80-95% of the total output. The Union des Vignerons des Coteaux de l'Ardèche (UVICA) oversees 12 cooperatives, with additional independent cooperatives and private producers contributing to the region's wine diversity. Ardèche wines range from fresh and balanced whites to robust and tannic reds, with Chatus being a standout variety.
