Tasting notes

Carbonic maceration on the Sangiovese gives this wine a signature pop of fresh cherry and wild strawberry, softened tannins, and an almost juicy, gulpable texture that is rare for the grape in California. The Carignan adds a thread of tartness and structural backbone without tipping the wine into anything heavy.

Still Red 2020 is a blend of Sangiovese and a small amount of Carignan from Hidden Hawk Ranch in Redwood Valley, Mendocino County. The vineyard is CCOF-certified organic, dry-farmed, and sits at roughly 722 feet elevation on Pinole Gravelly Loam soils. The Carignan vines are old, head-trained, and grown on St. George rootstock. The large diurnal temperature swings in Redwood Valley — often 50 degrees between day and night — allow the fruit to ripen fully while retaining natural acidity.

The Sangiovese is fermented using carbonic maceration: whole uncrushed clusters are placed in a sealed vessel filled with CO2, triggering intracellular fermentation inside each berry before the grapes rupture and release their juice. This technique extracts color and fruit character while keeping tannin extraction minimal, producing a light-bodied, juicy red. No sulfites or other additions are used at any stage — this is a zero-zero wine.

Winemaker Booker Riley operates out of a shared facility in Richmond, California, alongside Gearhead Wines and Purity Wine. Riley sources exclusively from organically farmed California vineyards, and his approach prioritizes letting the vineyard do the talking rather than intervening in the cellar. The result here is a transparent, fresh expression of Mendocino fruit with very little winemaker fingerprint beyond the carbonic technique applied to the Sangiovese.

Works well with tomato-based pasta, pizza margherita, or anything with fresh herbs like basil and thyme, which play off Sangiovese's natural herbal notes. Charcuterie boards and soft cheeses are solid options. Serve with a slight chill — around 55F — to highlight the fresh fruit character.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Everything is Okay

Everything is Okay is the natural wine project of winemaker Booker Riley, based out of a shared production facility in Richmond, California. The collective includes other producers such as Gearhead Wines and Purity Wine. Riley's philosophy centers on sourcing from organically farmed California vineyards and working with growers who have deep knowledge of their specific sites.

All grapes used by Everything is Okay are certified organic. Riley practices zero-zero winemaking: no sulfites, no fining agents, no additives at any stage of production. The goal is to source fruit that can carry a wine on its own without cellar correction or supplementation.

Riley applies carbonic maceration to his Sangiovese, a technique that ferments whole uncrushed clusters in a CO2-saturated, oxygen-free vessel. The intracellular fermentation this triggers produces wines that are light in color, low in tannin, and high in fresh red fruit aromatics — a deliberate contrast to how Sangiovese is typically handled in California. Carignan from Hidden Hawk Ranch, sourced from dry-farmed old vines on St. George rootstock, is blended in at a small percentage.

Wine region

California, United States

Mendocino County sits at the northern end of California's North Coast wine country, bordered by Sonoma County to the south and Lake County to the east. The county divides into two distinct climate zones split by the Mendocino Range. To the west, the Anderson Valley receives heavy Pacific fog influence through the Navarro River corridor, keeping temperatures cool and favoring Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Alsatian varieties. To the east, the inland valleys — Redwood Valley, Potter Valley, Ukiah — sit in a rain shadow and run warmer and drier, with Region III and IV Winkler ratings during the growing season.

Redwood Valley AVA lies in the northern reaches of the Russian River drainage at roughly 700 feet elevation, where warm daytime temperatures and dramatic diurnal shifts (often 50 degrees between day and night) allow for ripe fruit with preserved acidity. The soils in the appellation are predominantly gravelly loam, providing excellent drainage and natural vine stress. Redwood Valley has long been farmed by families of Italian descent who planted varieties like Carignan, Zinfandel, Barbera, and Sangiovese, many of which remain as old-vine dry-farmed blocks today. Mendocino County leads California in the percentage of CCOF-certified organic vineyard acreage, with nearly 25% of all plantings farmed organically.
