Tasting notes

Cofermenting Syrah with Marsanne and Viognier on skins for three weeks is a Northern Rhone move rarely attempted in California at this scale, and it gives the wine a floral, textured quality that pure red blends can't replicate. Served lightly chilled, the fruit reads as fresh red berry and stone fruit with herbal lift rather than the jammy weight you might expect from Zinfandel in Mendocino.

Solid + Sensible is a five-variety field blend sourced from two CCOF-certified organic vineyards in Hopland, Mendocino County. The red varieties, Syrah and Zinfandel (45% of the blend), come from Poor Ranch, a dry-farmed hillside property homesteaded in 1888 that sits between 860 and 1,800 feet elevation on Redvine series soils above the fog line. The white Rhone varieties, Roussanne, Marsanne, and Viognier (55% of the blend), come from Bonofiglio Vineyard, a seven-acre plot on former Russian River alluvium in town of Hopland, farmed by Glenn McGourtey on Russian River loam.

This cuvee is assembled from three distinct lots. The first is a coferment of whole-cluster Syrah with destemmed Marsanne and Viognier, left on skins for three weeks. The second combines Syrah and Zinfandel using separate techniques. The third brings in the remaining white varieties. All fermentations use native yeasts. No sulfur is added at any point, and the wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered.

The result drinks like a Rhone-inflected California red with genuine texture from the extended skin contact on the whites. Floral lift from Viognier and Roussanne keeps the Syrah and Zinfandel fruit grounded and fresh rather than heavy. It is designed to be served slightly chilled and consumed without ceremony.

The wine's brightness and moderate tannin make it flexible at the table. Serve it with roast chicken, grilled lamb merguez, or a charcuterie spread that includes something with some spice. It also holds up well against dishes with a tomato base, where the fruit and acidity reinforce each other.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Subject to Change

Subject to Change Wine Co. was founded in 2017 by Alex Pomerantz, a former sommelier who relocated to Northern California in 2011 for a harvest internship and later spent several years managing winemaking at a Sonoma winery before launching his own label. The winery operated out of Oakland and built its range around fruit sourced primarily from Mendocino County, working with growers who farm without synthetic inputs.

The winery did not own vineyards but maintained long-term purchasing relationships with certified organic growers, focusing on sites where they could be the primary or sole buyer. Vineyard and farming practices were guided in part by consultant David Rothschild. All wines across the Subject to Change range were made with native yeasts, no added sulfur, and no fining or filtration, without exceptions.

At its peak, Subject to Change produced around 20,000 cases annually and distributed to 15 countries. The winery began winding down operations in 2025 and ceased production, making remaining bottles from earlier vintages a final record of the project. Solid + Sensible, part of the All Hours multi-vineyard label, was one of the more technically ambitious wines in the lineup, combining cofermentation of red and white varieties with extended skin contact.

Wine region

Mendocino County, United States

Mendocino County sits north of Sonoma along California's North Coast, with growing conditions shaped by the coastal ranges that moderate Pacific influence. Inland valleys such as Redwood Valley, Ukiah, and Hopland are warmer and more sheltered than the coast but still benefit from strong diurnal temperature swings that preserve acidity in ripe fruit. The county grows a broad range of varieties including Zinfandel, Syrah, Petite Sirah, Carignan, Grenache, Chardonnay, and Rhone whites including Roussanne, Marsanne, and Viognier.

Hopland, where both Poor Ranch and Bonofiglio Vineyard are located, sits in the southern part of the county along the Russian River corridor. Poor Ranch occupies hillside terrain on the western slope of the Mayacamas Mountain Range at elevations between 860 and 1,800 feet, placing it above the fog that affects lower sites. Mendocino County has historically been home to a high concentration of certified organic vineyards relative to other California counties, making it a natural sourcing region for natural wine producers.
