Tasting notes

This wine delivers a specific kind of tension: the aromatic lift of Muscat and Verdelho against the grip of skin-contact tannins and limestone-driven acidity, finishing bone dry with a black tea-like bitterness. The 2,000-foot elevation in Calaveras County keeps alcohol naturally low and acidity brisk, making it genuinely versatile at the table.

Queen of the Sierra Amber is a skin-contact blend grown entirely on the Rorick Heritage Vineyard in Calaveras County, Sierra Foothills, at 2,000 feet elevation. The vineyard sits on a distinctive layer of schist over dolomite-rich limestone, a soil profile that drives the wine's mineral spine and bright natural acidity. All fruit is organically farmed and hand-harvested.

Fermentation happened in open-top vessels with a mix of destemmed and whole-bunch fruit, using only native yeasts. Cap management was kept to one punchdown or pumpover per day to minimize oxidation during skin contact. A portion of Vermentino was sealed in a concrete egg for four months, and a separate lot of Muscat was fermented carbonically, both additions folded into the final blend to build aromatic complexity. The wine was then moved to neutral 227L barrique or stainless steel before being bottled unfined and unfiltered with minimal added sulfur.

The result is a dry, amber-colored wine with tannic grip from the extended skin contact, showing aromas of clementine, dried apricot, and white tea alongside a textured, mouthwatering finish. No new oak is used at any point in the Forlorn Hope cellar, and no additives, commercial yeast, acids, enzymes, or nutrients were introduced.

Rorick Heritage Vineyard has a long history: first ranched by the Shaw family in 1844, purchased by Barden Stevenot in the 1960s, who planted own-rooted Wente Chardonnay clones between 1974 and 1976. Matthew Rorick bought the property in 2013 and converted all 75 acres to organic farming.

The wine's dry, tannic finish and bright acidity make it a strong match for spiced dishes: Thai larb, Indian dal, or pork with turmeric and pineapple. It also works well with oily fish like black bass ceviche or mackerel. Hard cheeses and charcuterie handle the tannins comfortably.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

Producer profile

Forlorn Hope

Matthew Rorick founded Forlorn Hope in 2005 after earning his degree in Viticulture and Enology from UC Davis and working harvest at wineries in New Zealand, South Africa, Chile, Peter Michael Winery, Chasseur, and Miura Vineyards in California. In 2013, Rorick purchased Rorick Heritage Vineyard in Calaveras County, just outside the town of Murphys, and converted the property to organic farming. He tends 75 acres of organically farmed vines at the site, with Mara Ambrose contributing to daily winery operations.

Rorick Heritage Vineyard was first ranched by the Shaw family in 1844. Barden Stevenot purchased the property in the 1960s and planted own-rooted Wente Chardonnay clones between 1974 and 1976, establishing the first wave of wine grape cultivation at the site. Several acres of those original heritage plantings remain. Stevenot expanded the vineyard to its current 75 acres in 2000. The vineyard sits at 2,000 feet elevation on a distinctive soil profile of schist over dolomite-rich limestone, which contributes structural acidity and mineral character to all wines grown there.

All Forlorn Hope wines are made without commercial yeast, ML bacteria, water additions, tartaric acid, enzymes, or nutrients. Fermentations are spontaneous, driven by native yeasts on the grapes. No new oak is used in the cellar; the oldest 60-gallon vessels in use date to the 1997 vintage. Most wines receive a minimal effective dose of sulfur either post-fermentation or pre-bottling. Wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Wine region

Sierra Foothills, USA

The Sierra Foothills AVA covers 2.6 million acres across eight California counties, running 160 miles along the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada range, approximately 40 miles east of Sacramento. Elevations across the region range from 1,200 to 3,500 feet above sea level. The climate is continental with Mediterranean influence: warm, dry summer days and cool nights, with diurnal temperature swings of up to 40 degrees Fahrenheit. This pattern preserves natural acidity in the grapes and keeps alcohol in check.

Calaveras County sits within the Sierra Foothills AVA, bordered by Amador County to the north and Mariposa County to the south, with vineyards planted between 800 and 3,300 feet in elevation. Soils in the county are geologically varied, including metamorphic, volcanic, limestone, and schist formations. Calaveras does not yet have its own nested AVA; wines from the county are labeled under the county name. The region has historically favored Rhône, Italian, and Spanish varieties alongside Zinfandel, but high-elevation sites with limestone soils like Rorick Heritage Vineyard are proving capable of producing precise, aromatic white and skin-contact wines.
