Tasting notes

The 2020 vintage pushed Swick toward direct-press rosé out of necessity, and the wine is sharper for it — cranberry and raspberry on a backbone of steely, almost Muscadet-level acidity. The six months in neutral French oak add just enough texture without blurring the line.

Swick Wines' 2020 Pinot Noir Rosé is sourced from two organically farmed sites in the Willamette Valley: Cancilla Vineyard, certified organic since 1998, and Greyhorse Vineyard in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA, which sits on coarse-grained marine sedimentary soils. The 2020 vintage was defined by wildfire smoke across Oregon, prompting Joe Swick to pivot toward direct-press and pétillant naturel styles rather than skin-contact wines — a decision that shaped this rosé into one of the most transparently fruited and acid-driven wines in his lineup.

Grapes were hand-harvested and direct-pressed as whole clusters, with no skin contact. The wine fermented with indigenous yeast and aged for six months in neutral French oak barrels. It was bottled unfined and unfiltered, with only a minimal addition of sulfur. Joe Swick himself described the 2020 as without a doubt the most acid-driven rosé he ever made.

The result is a dry, pale rosé that leans on fresh red fruit and mouthwatering acidity rather than weight or extraction. At 13% ABV, it fits squarely in Swick's house style: wines built for the table, not for sipping in isolation. It drinks best young, well-chilled, alongside food.

Serve well-chilled alongside grilled salmon, Pacific razor clams, or a simple salad of shaved fennel and citrus. The high acidity cuts through rich seafood preparations and holds its own against mild goat cheese.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Swick Wines

Joe Swick is a fifth-generation Oregonian, born and raised in Portland. He entered the wine trade working as a shipping and receiving clerk at a specialty organic food store in Portland, then worked his first harvest as a cellar assistant at Owen Roe Winery in 2003. Over the following decade, he completed roughly 15 harvests across Tasmania, New Zealand, Portugal, Italy, and France, including time with Simon Busser in Cahors and Julien Labet in Jura. He returned to Oregon in 2013 and founded Swick Wines in the Willamette Valley.

Swick works exclusively with organically or biodynamically farmed vineyards in the colder regions of Oregon and Washington State. His sources include certified organic sites such as Cancilla Vineyard in the northwest Willamette Valley, certified organic since 1998, and Greyhorse Vineyard in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA, which is practicing organic. He focuses on cool-climate sites that produce wines with natural acidity and lower alcohol, spanning the Willamette Valley, Columbia Gorge, and Yakima Valley.

Swick's cellar approach is minimal and consistent: spontaneous fermentation only, no commercial yeasts, no acid corrections, no temperature-controlled fermentors, no fining, and no filtration. Whole cluster maceration is standard for his reds, worked by foot one to two times daily. Aging takes place in neutral French oak. A small amount of sulfur is added at bottling on select wines when deemed necessary; some wines are bottled with zero sulfur. His rosé is typically made by direct press, with no skin contact, and aged six months in neutral French oak before unfined, unfiltered bottling.

Wine region

Willamette Valley, USA

The Willamette Valley stretches roughly 150 miles north to south between the Coast Range and the Cascade Mountains in northwestern Oregon. The Coast Range absorbs Pacific moisture and creates a rain shadow over the valley, producing a long, dry growing season with warm days and cool evenings. The Van Duzer Corridor, a gap in the Coast Range, funnels afternoon marine winds into the southern valley, moderating summer temperatures and preserving acidity in the grapes. This cool-climate corridor is among the most suitable environments for Pinot Noir outside of Burgundy.

The Willamette Valley AVA contains eleven nested sub-appellations. Three primary soil types define the region: volcanic basalt Jory soils in the Dundee Hills, marine sedimentary Willakenzie soils in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA, and loess-based Laurelwood soils in the Chehalem Mountains. Swick sources from sites spanning the broader Willamette Valley appellation, including Yamhill-Carlton's well-drained marine sedimentary terrain, which tends to produce wines with bright acidity and structural tension. Pinot Noir is the dominant variety, supplemented by Chardonnay and Pinot Gris across the valley's sub-appellations.
