Tasting notes

This is Carignan done the natural way: full carbonic maceration on CCOF-certified old vines from granitic schist soils at 1,300 feet, zero sulfur, nothing added. The result is a dry, mineral-edged red with juicy cherry and blood orange fruit that punches well above its zero-intervention premise.

Gearhead Wines Old Vine Carignan 2020 is 100% Carignan sourced from the CCOF-certified Love Ranch in Madera, California. Love Ranch was established in 1994 near Coarsegold, about 35 miles south of Yosemite National Park, and sits at roughly 1,300 feet elevation on granitic schist soils. The vineyard is dry-farmed and certified organic, farmed by Oscar Ramos.

Winemaker Craig West fermented this wine carbonically with nothing added — no sulfur, no fining, no filtration. This zero-zero approach is consistent across all Gearhead wines. West produces at very small scale, sourcing exclusively from organically farmed vineyards across California.

Carignan from old vines produces concentrated fruit with naturally high acidity and structured tannins. At Love Ranch, the combination of granitic schist soils, elevation, and dry-farming drives intensity while the warm days and cooling Sierra Nevada air preserve freshness. The 2020 vintage on the West Coast was marked by wildfire smoke, and the choice of full carbonic maceration avoided any extraction of smoke-related compounds from the skins.

Expect aromas of ripe cherry and strawberry with a tart blood orange note, supported by mineral depth and lively acidity. The wine is bone dry despite the fruit-forward nose.

Serve slightly chilled at 55-60F. Works well with charcuterie, grilled chicken thighs with herbs, or a spread of cured meats and aged hard cheeses. The bright acidity and light tannin also make it a natural match for dishes with tomato-based sauces.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Gearhead Wines

Gearhead Wines is the project of Craig West, based in the Bay Area of California. Before wine, West worked as a commercial fisherman and as a baker for Acme Bread in the Bay Area. His entry into winemaking came in 2016 when Noel Diaz of Purity Wines in Richmond invited him to tread grapes in an open-top fermenter. West made his first vintage that same year from his garage and has built Gearhead incrementally since then.

West does not own vineyards. He sources exclusively from organically farmed sites across California, purchasing fruit from CCOF-certified and other organic growers. His winemaking is done at the Purity Wines facility in Richmond. All Gearhead wines are foot-tread, many use carbonic maceration, and none have sulfur added. The wines are unfined and unfiltered, produced in very small lots — typically under 100 cases per wine.

For his Carignan work, West has consistently drawn from the CCOF-certified Love Ranch in Madera, one of the better-known sources of organically grown Rhône varieties in California's Central Valley foothills. His 2020 vintage wines were produced carbonic in response to the wildfire smoke conditions affecting much of the California harvest that year.

Wine region

California, United States

The Madera AVA sits in the San Joaquin Valley of California's Central Valley, roughly 30 miles northwest of Fresno and about 35 miles south of Yosemite National Park. The AVA received official designation in 1984 and is one of California's oldest established viticultural areas, with European settlers planting vines here in the late 1800s. The climate is hot and semi-arid — Madera County averages only 12 inches of rainfall per year — but the Sierra Nevada range and the San Joaquin River provide cooling influences. Carignane is among the more significant red varieties planted in the county, with over 1,100 acres recorded.

Most Madera viticulture takes place on the flat valley floor on alluvial loam soils, producing high yields for bulk wine. The foothill sites near Coarsegold tell a different story: at elevations around 1,300 feet, soils shift to granitic schist, vine yields drop, and fruit quality rises markedly. Love Ranch, established in 1994 and certified organic by CCOF, occupies these foothills with nine Rhône varieties dry-farmed on thin granite-based soils. Prevailing winds during summer cool the site and help retain acidity in the grapes.
