Tasting notes

This is a genuinely light-footed orange wine — light gold, not amber, with a satiny texture and flavors of vanilla cream, coconut biscuit, and cardamom that feel nothing like the heavy, tannic skin-contact wines California often produces. The limestone and decomposed granite soils of Eden Rift Vineyards keep the acidity sharp and focused, giving the wine structure without weight.

Hang Eleven Orange is a skin-contact Chardonnay sourced from Eden Rift Vineyards in the Cienega Valley AVA of San Benito County. Eden Rift is one of California's oldest continuously planted vineyard sites, with vines tracing back to 1849 on the San Andreas Fault line at 1,600 to 1,800 feet elevation. The soils here are a mix of limestone and decomposed granite — the same calcareous strata that drew Calera to the valley — and they drive the ripping acidity this grape carries even with reduced malic acid.

After harvest, the Chardonnay was destemmed, fermented on skins for 7 days with native yeast, and pressed with only partial malolactic fermentation. The wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered with a single addition of sulfites at 30ppm. The result is light gold in the glass — closer to apple cider than amber — with a satiny texture that's uncommon for California orange wine at this weight.

The label features Steve Zissou from Wes Anderson's The Life Aquatic, a nod to winemaker Quinn Hobbs's connection to surf culture and the ocean. Hollow Wines makes all of its wines in Gilroy, sourcing only from organic and dry-farmed vineyards. The operation is 100% vegan. Serve slightly chilled, around 50-55F.

The wine's bright acidity and satiny texture make it a natural with grilled seafood — try it with whole roasted branzino, grilled prawns with lemon butter, or a crab salad with citrus vinaigrette. It also holds up well against soft-ripened cheeses like Brie or Camembert, where the wine's creaminess echoes the cheese without being overwhelmed. Slightly chilled, it works as a standalone aperitif alongside marcona almonds or rice crackers.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Hollow Wines

Hollow Wines was founded in 2020 by Woodson 'Quinn' Hobbs, who grew up in Portola Valley south of San Francisco and currently lives in Los Angeles. Hobbs makes his wines at a custom crush facility in Gilroy, California. He began volunteering at wineries in the Hollister area and Santa Barbara before traveling to Western Australia to study natural winemaking with Side Project Wines, then left a career in marketing to pursue winemaking full time while completing a PhD in global leadership and change focused on low-carbon wine production.

Hobbs sources fruit exclusively from organic and dry-farmed vineyards, requiring all growers to farm without synthetic herbicides including glyphosate. His fruit sources have included Eden Rift Vineyards and DeRose Vineyards in the Cienega Valley AVA of San Benito County, as well as Siletto Family Vineyards. All Hollow Wines are vegan. The operation is a one-person project: Hobbs hand-sorts and hand-shovels all fruit himself.

Hollow Wines focuses on minimal intervention: native yeast fermentations, no fining or filtration, and sulfite additions kept at or below 30ppm at bottling. Hobbs describes his approach as 'No B.S. winemaking' — wild yeast fermentation with no additions beyond a single dose of sulfur. His orange wines undergo 7 days of skin contact before pressing, with partial or blocked malolactic fermentation depending on the acidity of the vintage fruit.

Wine region

San Benito County, Central Coast, USA

The Cienega Valley AVA sits in San Benito County, roughly 20 miles inland from Monterey Bay in the Gabilan Mountain Range. The valley straddles the San Andreas Fault, which has fractured the subsoil into a mix of limestone, decomposed granite, and mineral-rich sedimentary deposits. Elevations at Eden Rift Vineyards range from 1,600 to 1,800 feet, and the estate receives daily offshore winds from the Pacific through the spring and summer months, moderating temperatures and extending the growing season. Warm days and cool nights preserve acidity in the fruit even at full ripeness.

The Cienega Valley has one of California's longest winemaking histories. Eden Rift Vineyards — the source for this Chardonnay — has been continuously planted since 1849, making it one of the oldest estate vineyards in the state. The calcareous, limestone-dominant soils are shared with neighboring Calera Wine, whose founder Josh Jensen sought out this specific geological strata for its resemblance to Burgundy's Cote d'Or. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are the primary varieties in the AVA, with clonal selections at Eden Rift including Calera, Wente 4 and 72, and Dijon clone 76.
