Tasting notes

This is Grenache stripped of its usual warmth and weight: wild strawberry and savory mineral on a lean, high-acid frame that actually wants to be chilled. The 30-day whole-cluster maceration adds grip and dried herb character without pushing it into heavy tannin territory.

Swick Wines sources this Grenache Noir from Conley Vineyard, a certified organic site in the Naches Heights AVA within Washington's Columbia Valley, situated north of Yakima at 1,600 to 1,700 feet elevation. The vineyard's sandy soils, high-altitude cool nights, persistent winds, and abundant daytime sun push the grapes toward natural acidity and measured ripeness rather than heat-driven weight.

In the cellar, Joe Swick uses 100% whole clusters with a 30-day skin maceration, foot stomping the fermenter one to two times daily with no temperature control. After pressing, the wine ages in neutral French oak barriques for roughly nine months. It is bottled unfined and unfiltered, with a small addition of sulfur at bottling for stability during transport.

The result is a light-bodied red built on freshness rather than power. Think wild tart strawberry, dried herbs, and a mineral saline edge rather than the jammy, high-alcohol Grenache profile common in warmer climates. Serve it lightly chilled, the way you would a Beaujolais or a Loire Cabernet Franc, and it opens up considerably over the first half hour.

Works well with charcuterie, grilled lamb merguez, or anything with bright acidity on the plate like a tomato-based braise. Its light body and dry character make it a natural with herb-roasted chicken or a simple mushroom pasta. Serve slightly chilled at around 58 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Swick Wines

Joe Swick is a fifth-generation Oregonian who got his start in wine in 2003 working as a cellar hand at Owen Roe Winery in Oregon, where the focus was largely on Washington State fruit. Over the following decade he completed roughly 15 harvests across Oregon, Washington, the Russian River Valley, Tasmania, New Zealand, Italy (Piedmont), the Douro Valley in Portugal, and France, where he first encountered natural wine. He founded Swick Wines in 2013 and operates out of Newberg, Oregon, in the Chehalem Mountains of the Willamette Valley.

Swick sources exclusively from certified organic or biodynamic vineyards in the colder growing areas of Oregon and Washington, with Conley Vineyard in the Naches Heights AVA being one of his most consistent sources for Rhone varieties. His Washington vineyards sit at higher elevations and receive more sun than the Oregon sites, with dry wind limiting disease pressure and keeping yields in check.

In the cellar, Swick inoculates nothing. All fermentations are spontaneous, whole-cluster red wines are foot stomped one to two times daily in open-top vessels, and wines age in older 500- and 600-liter French oak barrels or concrete eggs. No fining, no filtration. A small amount of sulfur at bottling is the only addition, and only when the wine needs it for transport stability.

Wine region

Columbia Valley, USA

The Columbia Valley AVA covers most of central and southern Washington State and crosses into northern Oregon along the Columbia River. It is an arid, continental climate shaped by the rain shadow of the Cascade Range, averaging under 10 inches of precipitation per year in the Yakima area. Long, sun-filled days drive ripeness, while large diurnal temperature swings of 40 degrees or more between day and night preserve acidity and freshness in the grapes.

The Naches Heights AVA, where Conley Vineyard sits, is a sub-appellation within the Columbia Valley north of Yakima, Washington. Its elevation ranges from 1,200 to 2,000 feet, with the higher sites draining cold air that would otherwise cause frost damage. Rhone varieties including Grenache Noir, Grenache Blanc, Mourvèdre, Syrah, and Marsanne thrive on the sandy soils here, producing wines with noticeably more freshness and mineral character than lower-elevation Columbia Valley sites.
