Tasting notes

This is a genuinely unusual Pinot Noir: half the blend was whole-bunch pressed like a white wine from Chene Vineyard's biodynamically farmed fruit, producing pale color and precise acidity, while the Bassi half adds strawberry and red cherry brightness from ancient marine sandstone just over a mile from the Pacific. Served with a slight chill, it bridges rosé and light red in a way that very few California Pinot Noirs attempt.

Dunites Glou Glou Pinot Noir is a 50/50 blend of Pinot Noir from two distinct SLO Coast sites. Half comes from Bassi Vineyard, located approximately 1.2 to 1.5 miles from the Pacific Ocean near Avila Beach, where marine-origin soils of Briones Tierra complex and Gaviota fine sandy loam over hard sandstone bedrock produce low-yielding, high-energy fruit. This portion was fermented as a light red with one-third whole cluster inclusion and gentle extraction. The other half comes from the 6.5-acre Chene Vineyard in the Edna Valley AVA, four miles from the ocean, farmed biodynamically and Demeter certified from the 2020 vintage onward, with biodynamic practices in use since 2017. That fruit was picked at low Brix and whole-bunch pressed before fermentation in neutral oak barrels, producing essentially a white or very pale wine from red grapes.

Blending these two approaches gives the wine its distinctive character: the Bassi component contributes red fruit, freshness, and a faint tannic grip, while the Chene component adds pale color, bright acidity, and mineral lift. The result sits stylistically between a rosé and a conventional Pinot Noir. Fermentation used native yeasts throughout, and the wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered with minimal sulfur addition.

Winemaker Tyler Eck trained in viticulture and oenology at Lincoln University in New Zealand and worked harvests at Dry River in Martinborough, Stefano Lubiana in Tasmania, and Domaine Francois Villard in the northern Rhône before joining Fess Parker Winery as associate winemaker. Rachel Goffinet Eck holds a viticulture degree from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and oversees vineyard sourcing, working with organically and biodynamically farmed sites on the SLO Coast. Dunites was founded in 2015 and produces approximately 1,100 cases per year across all wines.

The SLO Coast AVA runs along the Pacific-facing slopes of San Luis Obispo County, encompassing communities from San Simeon in the north to Arroyo Grande in the south. The region's west-facing orientation channels persistent marine fog and cool afternoon winds off the Pacific, moderating temperatures and extending the growing season significantly. Soils range from ancient marine sandstone and sandy loam at sites close to the water to clay-rich valley floors further inland. The Edna Valley sub-appellation within SLO Coast sits in a bowl-shaped valley south of the city of San Luis Obispo, collecting cool, moisture-laden air from the ocean.

Serve slightly chilled at around 55F. The wine's bright acidity and low tannin make it a natural match for grilled salmon, fresh oysters from Morro Bay, or a simple roast chicken. It also works well alongside charcuterie or a light mushroom pasta where a full red would overwhelm.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Producer profile

Dunites

Dunites Wine Company was founded in 2015 by Tyler Eck and Rachel Goffinet Eck, a husband-and-wife team based in Pismo Beach. The name references the Dunites, a Depression-era community of poets, philosophers, and free thinkers who lived on the sand dunes of southern San Luis Obispo County. The winery produces approximately 1,100 cases per year across all wines, with production taking place at Fess Parker Winery in Los Olivos, where Tyler works as associate winemaker.

Tyler earned dual degrees from UC Santa Barbara followed by viticulture and oenology from Lincoln University in New Zealand. He worked harvests at Dry River in Martinborough, Stefano Lubiana in Tasmania, Domaine Francois Villard in Saint-Michel-sur-Rhone, and Peay Vineyards in Cloverdale before joining Fess Parker. Rachel holds a viticulture degree from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and has worked with Stephen Ross Wine Cellars in SLO, Paul Lato Wines in Santa Maria, and Te Kairanga in Martinborough, New Zealand. Through her vineyard management work on the SLO Coast, Dunites gains access to organically and biodynamically farmed sites within 12 miles of the Pacific.

Dunites employs native yeast fermentations throughout, uses varying percentages of whole cluster inclusion depending on the wine, practices foot treading for gentle extraction, ages in neutral oak barrels, and bottles all wines unfined and unfiltered with minimal sulfur addition. The Glou Glou Pinot Noir takes this approach further by treating the two vineyard sources with opposite winemaking methods before blending: Bassi fruit is fermented as a light red with whole cluster inclusion, while Chene fruit is whole-bunch pressed and fermented as a white wine in neutral oak.

Wine region

San Luis Obispo Coast, USA

The San Luis Obispo Coast AVA runs along the Pacific-facing slopes of San Luis Obispo County, stretching from San Simeon in the north to the county's southern boundary near Arroyo Grande. The region is oriented west toward the ocean, which allows persistent marine fog and afternoon wind to moderate temperatures throughout the growing season. Nearly all commercial vineyards sit within six miles of the Pacific, and many of the most notable sites are within two miles. The resulting climate is classified primarily as Region I on the Winkler scale, one of the coolest designations in California viticulture.

Soils across the SLO Coast AVA reflect the region's geological history as uplifted ocean floor. The dominant soil types are sandy loam and loam derived from marine sedimentary deposits, including the Pismo, Briones, and Tierra series. At Bassi Vineyard near Avila Beach, the bedrock is hard marine sandstone overlaid by Briones Tierra complex and Gaviota fine sandy loam, producing naturally low yields and concentrated fruit. The Edna Valley, a sub-appellation within the SLO Coast, sits in a bowl-shaped valley south of the city of San Luis Obispo where low hills on three sides trap cool, foggy air from the Pacific. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are the primary varieties planted across both the broader AVA and the Edna Valley sub-appellation.
