Tasting notes

The split-lot winemaking is the story here: foot-treaded, 7-day skin contact on one half, direct press on the other, then blended to get both structure and freshness. Grenache Blanc from Demeter-certified Martian Ranch shows as stone fruit and citrus peel with a chalky, grip-forward texture that holds up to food.

Free Your Body is a 100% Grenache Blanc skin-contact wine sourced from Martian Ranch, a Demeter-certified biodynamic estate on Alisos Canyon Road in Los Alamos, Santa Barbara County. The vineyard is planted with Grenache Blanc clone 141 on 101-14 rootstock, farmed without synthetic inputs and guided by a biodynamic calendar. Martian Ranch sits between the Santa Rita Hills and Santa Maria Valley AVAs, where cool ocean airflow off the Pacific moderates warm summer days and extends hang time.

Fruit was harvested in two equal passes on September 11 and September 15 at an average of 21.1 Brix. The first half was foot-treaded and fermented on the skins for 7 days before pressing to stainless steel tank. The second half went direct to press, was cold settled, then blended with the skin-fermented portion. The combined cuvee aged on lees in stainless steel for 2 months, then was racked to a neutral French oak barrique for an additional 3 months. No fining or filtration. Minimal sulfur added at bottling.

Grenache Blanc is a thick-skinned variety that releases substantial tannin, aroma, and texture with skin contact. The split-lot approach here is deliberate: the winemakers extracted phenolic structure and skin character from the first half while preserving primary fruit aromatics through direct press on the second, then married the two to balance extraction with freshness.

Wonderwerk is the project of Issamu Kamide and Andrew Lardy, two high school friends from Virginia now based in Los Angeles. Andrew trained in enology at Fresno State and serves as Head Distiller at Spirit Guild Distillery in downtown LA. Issamu holds a WSET Level 3 certification and works in product innovation for a kombucha brand. They produce and bottle by hand, sourcing from responsibly farmed vineyards across California.

The skin tannin and acidity make this a natural at the table with food. Pour it with grilled whole fish, roasted chicken with herbs, soft-ripened cheeses, or grain-based dishes like farro with roasted vegetables. It can handle a little fat and salt.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Wonderwerk

Wonderwerk, also known as House of Fermentation, is the project of Issamu Kamide and Andrew Lardy, high school friends from Virginia who relocated to Los Angeles. Andrew initially pursued a graduate degree in neuropsychology before shifting to fermentation science, eventually completing the enology program at Fresno State and working at several Central Coast wineries. He currently serves as Head Distiller at Spirit Guild Distillery in downtown Los Angeles. Issamu studied brand management, earned a WSET Level 3 certification, and works in marketing and product innovation in the beverage industry.

Wonderwerk sources grapes from responsibly farmed vineyards across California, with a stated preference for organically and biodynamically managed sites. The name Wonderwerk comes from a cave in South Africa believed to contain the earliest evidence of human cooking, a reference the founders use to ground their experimental approach in something primal. All wines are produced without fining or filtration, with minimal sulfur added at bottling.

In the cellar, Wonderwerk uses native yeast fermentation and employs techniques ranging from foot-treading and carbonic maceration to extended skin contact and piquette production. Free Your Body uses a split-lot method specific to this bottling: half the Grenache Blanc fruit is foot-treaded and fermented on the skins for 7 days, the other half goes direct to press, and the two portions are blended before aging on lees in stainless steel and then neutral French oak barrique.

Wine region

Santa Barbara County, California, United States

Santa Barbara County sits at the southern end of California's Central Coast, defined by east-west trending mountain ranges that funnel cold Pacific air directly into the valley floors. This transverse orientation is unusual along the California coast and produces some of the most dramatic diurnal temperature swings in the state, often 40 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit between daytime highs and overnight lows. Los Alamos, in the northern part of the county, lies between the Santa Rita Hills and Santa Maria Valley AVAs on Alisos Canyon Road, where the canyon funnels afternoon winds and cool, marine-influenced fog.

Santa Barbara County grows Rhone varieties especially well given its warm days and cool nights. Grenache Blanc, Grenache Noir, Syrah, Mourvedre, and Viognier all perform in the county alongside Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the cooler coastal zones. Martian Ranch, a 20-acre Demeter-certified biodynamic estate within the Santa Barbara County AVA, specializes in Rhone and Spanish varieties planted on soils with significant sand and alluvial composition in Alisos Canyon.
