Tasting notes

This is a low-intervention Chardonnay pét nat from one of California's most committed organic farming duos, made from cool-climate Monterey fruit with the kind of bright acidity and restraint the region delivers in its best vintages. The gentle effervescence and slight haze from residual lees give it a texture and freshness you won't find in a still wine from the same grapes.

Lost Moon is a collaboration between Les Lunes Wine and Trumpet Wine, two California-based natural wine projects. The wine is made from 100% Chardonnay sourced from Monterey County, California, and produced using the méthode ancestrale: bottled before primary fermentation is complete so the wine captures its own CO2 naturally in the bottle, with no added sugar or yeast.

Les Lunes is the project of winemakers Shaunt Oungoulian and Diego Roig, who lease and organically farm vineyards across Northern California. Their protocol rules out synthetic inputs, commercial yeasts, fining, and filtration. Only a small amount of sulfur is considered at bottling, determined on a case-by-case basis. The Coastal Form label brings that same approach to Monterey Chardonnay in a lighter, effervescent format.

Monterey County's northern Salinas Valley is defined by persistent marine influence from Monterey Bay. Daytime temperatures in the northern growing areas rarely exceed 75°F, and afternoon winds funnel through the valley creating a long, cool growing season. Chardonnay thrives in these conditions, with the county's sandy loam soils of marine sedimentary origin providing good drainage and naturally limiting vine vigor. The result is fruit with bright acidity and restrained alcohol — well suited to pét nat production.

Expect a hazy, lightly sparkling white with gentle bubbles, fresh citrus and stone fruit character, and the slightly yeasty texture typical of the méthode ancestrale. Serve well chilled and drink soon after purchase.

Works well as an aperitif alongside oysters, light seafood crudo, or fresh goat cheese. The bright acidity and gentle bubbles also make it a natural with fried foods — fish tacos, tempura vegetables, or arancini. Avoid heavy cream sauces or anything that will overwhelm the wine's delicate effervescence.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Lost Moon

Les Lunes Wine is the primary project of Diego Roig and Shaunt Oungoulian, based in the Bay Area. Roig comes from a California winemaking family with roots in the pre-Prohibition era and studied Viticulture and Enology at UC Davis before apprenticing in France with Philippe Valette in Mâcon and Julie Balagny in Fleurie. The two run their cellar out of a basement in Orinda, east of Berkeley, which gives them full control over their fermentation environment without cross-contamination from other wineries' yeasts.

Les Lunes farms and manages over eight hectares of vineyards across Sonoma, Napa, and Mendocino counties, all organically farmed. Their approach focuses on thoughtful pruning, cover cropping, and compost application to address nutrient deficiencies in the vineyard rather than making adjustments in the cellar. They work exclusively with grapes they farm themselves wherever possible. The Lost Moon label, made in collaboration with Trumpet Wine, extends that philosophy to Monterey County Chardonnay.

All Les Lunes wines are fermented with native yeasts. No fining or filtration is used. A small dose of sulfur is considered at bottling on a barrel-by-barrel basis, but is not added as a matter of routine. The Coastal Form Pet Nat is made using the méthode ancestrale: the wine is sealed in bottle before primary fermentation is complete, trapping CO2 naturally without the addition of sugar or commercial yeast cultures.

Wine region

Monterey, USA

Monterey County sits along California's Central Coast, with the northern portion of the Salinas Valley shaped almost entirely by marine influence from Monterey Bay. Daytime temperatures in the northern growing areas rarely exceed 75°F, and persistent afternoon winds funnel southward through the valley, cooling vineyards and extending the growing season well into autumn. Annual rainfall averages around 10 inches, concentrated in winter, so the growing season is effectively semi-arid. Soils across the county are predominantly sandy loam of marine sedimentary origin, with good drainage that limits vine vigor and naturally concentrates flavor.

Monterey County encompasses several distinct AVAs, including Santa Lucia Highlands, Arroyo Seco, Chalone, and the broader Monterey AVA. Chardonnay is the dominant variety county-wide, accounting for over 50 percent of all vines in production. The Santa Lucia Highlands, perched on east-facing alluvial terraces at 40 to 2,330 feet elevation, is the most celebrated sub-appellation for both Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, with Chualar Loam and Arroyo Seco Gravelly Sandy Loam as the primary soil types. The cool climate across the northern growing areas makes Monterey County a consistent source of high-acid, lower-alcohol white wines well suited to sparkling production.
