Tasting notes

This is one of the foundational California natural reds — made by a winemaker who was farming without pesticides and bottling without sulfur decades before either practice had a name. The dark fruit and earthy depth sit alongside a subtle oxidative note that gives the wine genuine character and age-worthiness uncommon in this price range.

Tony Coturri's California Red is a field-blend-style red sourced from organically farmed vineyards in Sonoma County. Coturri works exclusively with grapes grown without synthetic pesticides, fungicides, or herbicides, a standard he has held since he began making wine in the early 1960s. The winery's estate vines sit on Sonoma Mountain above the town of Glen Ellen, in the appellation known as the Valley of the Moon, where volcanic-based, well-draining soils and a thermal belt climate produce grapes with firm structure and natural acidity.

The wine is made with full spontaneous fermentation using only native yeasts. Grapes are hand-harvested, destemmed, and fermented in neutral oak. The wine is then aged in reconditioned neutral French oak barrels before bottling unfined, unfiltered, and with zero sulfur additions. Nothing is added or removed at any stage.

The blend draws on Sonoma heritage varieties — including Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan, and Merlot — all from organically farmed sites. Expect dark fruit, earthy undertones, and the slight oxidative character that comes from extended neutral oak aging without protective sulfur. The wine is alive, unprocessed, and will likely show sediment in the bottle.

This wine holds up well to roasted pork, duck with cherry-based sauces, and grilled lamb. The earthy, dark-fruit profile also pairs with dishes featuring mushrooms, lentils, or aged hard cheeses. Slight tannin and firm acidity make it a natural fit at the table rather than on its own.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Tony Coturri

Coturri Winery is located on Sonoma Mountain above Glen Ellen, California. The Coturri family purchased the property in 1961 and planted their first two acres of vines in 1967. The winery was formally established in 1979 by Harry 'Red' Coturri and his sons Tony and Phil. Red had learned winemaking during Prohibition from his father Enrico, who immigrated to the United States from Farneta, Italy in 1901 and worked as a barrel cooper in San Francisco. Tony has been making wine since 1963 and is recognized as one of the earliest practitioners of no-addition, no-sulfur winemaking in California.

The Coturri estate vines on Sonoma Mountain are dry-farmed and head-pruned, with some blocks planted as far back as 1974. The winery has never used synthetic pesticides, fungicides, or herbicides on any vineyards it sources from. For outside fruit, Coturri works only with certified organic or organically farmed growers. The estate soils are volcanic-based and well-draining, consistent with Sonoma Mountain's Spreckels-Felta soil association.

In the cellar, Tony Coturri ferments with native yeasts in open-top tanks, using hand punch-downs and a traditional basket press for gentle extraction. Wines age in reconditioned neutral French oak barrels and are racked by hand. Nothing is added at any stage — no sulfur, no fining agents, no filtration. The wines are bottled as-is and frequently show sediment, which is expected and intentional.

Wine region

Sonoma, USA

Sonoma County encompasses 18 distinct AVAs across a wide range of elevations, soils, and climates. Sonoma Mountain AVA, established in 1985, sits on the western edge of the Valley of the Moon above the town of Glen Ellen. Vineyards here grow on volcanic-based, well-draining soils at elevations roughly between 400 and 2,300 feet. A thermal belt effect — where cold air drains off the hillsides into the valley below — moderates frost risk and extends the growing season, producing grapes with good sugar-acid balance.

The broader Sonoma Valley AVA, which contains Sonoma Mountain as a sub-appellation, is flanked by the Mayacamas Mountains to the east and the Sonoma Mountains to the west. These ranges protect the valley from excessive Pacific moisture while allowing cool air from San Pablo Bay to moderate summer heat. Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan, and Merlot all perform well in Sonoma's warmer inland pockets, and many of the county's oldest organic vineyards are concentrated in this part of Sonoma.
