Tasting notes

This is one of the few American piquettes that successfully bridges the piquette-wine hybrid format: the Grüner Veltliner adds a snappy citrus spine and the Vidal Blanc brings tropical weight, while the verjus acidulation keeps everything bright and clean rather than flat. The result is cloudy, low-ABV, and genuinely refreshing in a way that cold beer achieves but most white wine does not.

Blinded by the Light is a piquette-based white blend from Old Westminster in Carroll County, Maryland. The blend is 50% Piquette Blanc, 30% Grüner Veltliner, and 20% Vidal Blanc, acidulated to taste with verjus. Piquette is made by rehydrating pressed grape pomace with water, which triggers a second spontaneous fermentation using the residual sugars and native yeasts still present in the skins. The result is a lower-alcohol, wine-adjacent beverage with a light, slightly spritzy texture.

This bottling pours a cloudy neon yellow. On the nose, expect tart lemon, pineapple core, and apricot skin. On the palate, the wine delivers lemonade-like citrus brightness, unripe peach, and tropical notes of pineapple and starfruit, with a mineral edge and clean, refreshing acidity. It is fermented with wild yeast, contains no added sulfites, and is bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Old Westminster sits at 1550 Old Westminster Road in Westminster, Maryland. The winery's Home Vineyard is planted at 800 feet elevation on channery loam soils over a bedrock of greenstone schist — terrain that favors high-acid, site-expressive fruit. Winemaker Lisa Hinton and vineyard manager Drew Baker source from both estate and neighboring vineyards across Carroll County, working with a pragmatic farming program that relies primarily on organic inputs.

Piquette carries no formal appellation designation; in the United States it exists as an emerging category championed by natural and low-intervention producers. Old Westminster has been a key voice in the American piquette conversation since launching its first commercial piquette bottling in 2018. Drink this cold and soon — piquette is not built for cellaring.

Serve well-chilled alongside fried chicken, fish tacos, or a simple green salad with citrus vinaigrette. Its low alcohol and bright acidity also make it a natural match for spicy food — Thai larb, Vietnamese summer rolls, or Szechuan noodles. Think of it as a high-quality adult refresher that works wherever you would reach for a cold beer or hard seltzer.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Old Westminister

Old Westminster Winery was founded in 2010 by siblings Ashli Johnson, Drew Baker, and Lisa Hinton on their family's farm in Westminster, Maryland. The family had moved to the property in 2000; it was formerly a juniper nursery. Planting began in spring 2011 with Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Chardonnay, and Albariño in the Home Vineyard at 800 feet elevation. In 2016 the winery was named a Top 100 Winery in the United States and acquired a second farm — Burnt Hill — planted with its first harvest in 2021.

Vineyard management is led by Drew Baker, who uses a pragmatic farming program relying primarily on organic materials, rotating sprays to avoid resistance, and planting diverse cover crops to support beneficial insects and vine health. The winery also sources fruit from neighboring Carroll County vineyards to represent a range of soil types and expositions. The approach falls short of full organic certification but avoids synthetic inputs except where they are demonstrably less harmful than organic alternatives.

Winemaking is handled by Lisa Hinton, who trained as a chemist before taking over cellar duties at Old Westminster. Her process relies on hand-picking, gravity rather than pumps, indigenous yeast fermentation, and bottling without fining or filtration. The winery has been active in experimental formats including carbonic maceration, skin-contact whites, pet-nat, and piquette — launching its first commercial piquette in 2018. Blinded by the Light is fermented with wild yeast, contains no added sulfites, and is acidulated to taste with verjus.

Wine region

Maryland, USA

Carroll County sits in the Maryland Piedmont, roughly 30 miles northwest of Baltimore. The terrain is defined by rolling hills, rocky ridgelines, and consistent elevation — Old Westminster's Home Vineyard sits at 800 feet on channery loam soils over greenstone schist bedrock. That rocky, well-drained substrate and the steady breeze off the hills naturally stress the vines and preserve acidity in the fruit. The region experiences warm, humid summers and cold winters, a continental climate that demands careful canopy management and vine selection.

Maryland has no prominent single appellation comparable to Willamette Valley or Finger Lakes, though the state's wine industry has grown steadily since the 1970s. Carroll County producers like Old Westminster draw on diverse local geologies — channery loam, schist, and clay — which contribute to variable but increasingly expressive wines. Hybrids like Vidal Blanc have long been part of the Mid-Atlantic wine toolkit, while European varieties like Grüner Veltliner are more recent additions being trialed by producers seeking higher-acid, lower-alcohol profiles suited to the region's warm growing season.
