Tasting notes

This Pinot comes from a sandstone hillside 1.2 miles from the Pacific, and you can taste the site: restrained raspberry and forest floor aromatics, a silky mid-palate, and a stem-spice quality on the finish that keeps you reaching for the glass. The 30% whole-cluster inclusion and native yeast fermentation give it a savory complexity you rarely find at this price point on the California coast.

Bassi Vineyard sits 1.2 miles from the Pacific Ocean near Avila Beach on a south-facing sandstone hillside. The 30-acre site was planted in 2001 and is farmed organically with biodynamic inputs by Mike Sinor of Sinor-LaVallee. The sandstone soils range from solid rock outcroppings to sandy loam deposits, forcing vines to struggle and concentrate flavor at moderate sugar levels.

Dunites sourced fruit here and handled it with a light hand: hand harvested with 30% whole clusters retained, fermented with native yeast and no added SO2, then basket pressed after a combination of gentle pumpovers and punchdowns. Malolactic conversion proceeded naturally. The wine aged 10 months in neutral French oak puncheon and barriques before bottling unfined and unfiltered with minimal SO2.

The result is a Pinot Noir that sits on the lighter, more aromatic end of the California spectrum. Raspberry, forest floor, and a distinct stem-driven spice mark the nose. On the palate it is juicy and silky with a mid-weight build and gentle tannins on the finish. The coastal proximity keeps acidity lively and alcohol restrained.

Its silky texture and bright acidity make it an easy match for salmon, roasted duck breast, or mushroom-based dishes. The whole-cluster spice works well alongside charcuterie and pinot-friendly cheeses like Gruyere or aged goat cheese. Serve slightly cool, around 58-62F, to keep the fruit fresh.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Dunites

Dunites Wine Co. was founded in 2015 by Tyler and Rachel Eck in San Luis Obispo County. The name comes from a Depression-era community of free-thinkers, artists, and philosophers who lived in the beach dunes of southern SLO County. Tyler studied viticulture and oenology at Lincoln University in New Zealand, then worked harvests at Dry River, Peay Vineyards, Stefano Lubiana, and Domaine Francois Villard before joining Fess Parker Winery as associate winemaker in 2014. Rachel holds a viticulture degree from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and gained cellar experience under Paul Lato and Stephen Ross before becoming a licensed pest control advisor and vineyard manager.

All Dunites vineyards are within 12 miles of the Pacific, most considerably closer. The Ecks work with multiple SLO Coast sites including Bassi near Avila Beach, Chene in Arroyo Grande, and Spanish Springs in Pismo Beach, each chosen for distinct soil and microclimate character. Rachel oversees farming and vineyard management; Tyler handles winemaking. The couple also farm a leased parcel in Edna Valley organically.

Tyler and Rachel use native yeast fermentation, native bacterial malolactic conversion, neutral oak aging, and bottle without fining or filtration. Whole cluster percentages vary by wine and vintage, typically ranging from 30% to higher for certain lots. Sulfur additions are kept minimal and added only at bottling. Production is small, around 1,100 cases annually across the full lineup of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Albariño, Syrah, and Grenache.

Wine region

SLO Coast, USA

The SLO Coast AVA was formally established on March 9, 2022, making it one of California's newest appellations. It spans a roughly 70-mile corridor in San Luis Obispo County, running from the northern county border near Ragged Point south to the Santa Barbara County line, bordered to the east by the Santa Lucia Mountains and to the west by the Pacific Ocean. With 97% of its 3,942 planted vineyard acres sitting within 6 miles of the Pacific, it is the most coastal wine AVA in the United States. It also registers as the coolest-temperature AVA in California by annual growing degree day data.

The climate is driven by persistent marine fog and afternoon winds that push through gaps in the Santa Lucia range, keeping growing season temperatures moderate and nights cool. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir together account for 78% of planted acreage, well suited to the Region I Winkler scale classification the AVA holds. Soils vary across the appellation: Franciscan formation-derived soils dominate the north and central zones, while younger marine deposits produce sandy loam near the coast. Near Avila Beach, where Bassi Vineyard sits, sandstone and marine-origin soils are the dominant profile. The SLO Coast AVA fully encompasses the older Edna Valley and Arroyo Grande Valley sub-appellations.
