Tasting notes

This is the wine that proves Tony Coturri was right all along: ripe California fruit, zero intervention, and decades of know-how produce something genuinely distinctive. The blend of Carignan, Zinfandel, and Petite Sirah delivers dark cherry, blackberry, and an earthy, slightly funky undercurrent that no additive-forward winery could replicate. No sulfur, no filtration, no apology.

The Albarello is Tony Coturri's field-blend-style red built on Carignan, Zinfandel, and Petite Sirah sourced from certified organic vineyards in Mendocino County. Grapes are hand-harvested, fermented spontaneously with native yeasts, aged in neutral oak barrels, and bottled with no fining, no filtration, and zero sulfur additions. Nothing else goes in.

Tony Coturri has been making wine this way since 1964, long before natural wine had a name or a market. Coturri Winery sits on Sonoma Mountain above the hamlet of Glen Ellen, in the Valley of the Moon, where the estate vineyard is planted on red clay and volcanic soils at roughly 750 feet elevation and is dry-farmed in the traditional head-pruned, Italian goblet style. The Albarello sources fruit from Mendocino County organic growers who follow the same no-spray commitment the Coturris have held since the beginning.

Carignane brings structure and dark fruit backbone; Zinfandel adds ripe berry weight and warmth; Petite Sirah contributes grip and deep color. The result is a wine that is concentrated and fruit-forward in the classic California mode, yet unmanipulated and alive, with the slight volatile edge and earthy depth that define Coturri's house style. It is the kind of red that rewards an hour in a decanter and a table full of food.

This wine has the weight and fruit intensity to stand up to braised short ribs, lamb shoulder, or a porchetta. It also works well alongside aged hard cheeses and anything with roasted tomatoes or eggplant. The Carignane backbone makes it a natural partner for rustic Italian-American Sunday dishes.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Tony Coturri

Coturri Winery was founded in 1979 by Harry 'Red' Coturri and his sons Tony and Phil, on Sonoma Mountain above Glen Ellen. The family has owned land there since 1961 and planted their first vines in 1967, adding more acreage in 1975. The winemaking lineage traces back to Enrico Coturri, who immigrated from the village of Farneta, Italy in 1901 and taught his son Red the traditional Italian methods he brought with him. Red in turn passed those methods to Tony, who has been making wine since 1964.

The Coturri estate vineyard is dry-farmed and head-pruned in the Italian goblet style, planted at approximately 750 feet elevation on red clay and volcanic soils. It includes Zinfandel clones from the historic Martini Monte Rosso selection on St. George rootstock. The winery has never used synthetic pesticides, fungicides, or herbicides on any vineyard it sources from. For the Albarello, fruit comes from certified organic Mendocino County growers who farm under the same no-spray standard.

Tony Coturri's winemaking approach has not changed since he started: grapes are hand-harvested, fermented with native yeasts only, aged in neutral oak barrels, and bottled with no fining agents, no filtration, and no sulfur additions. No other additives of any kind are used. The resulting wines carry zero sulfur additions and sulfite levels under 10 mg/L as naturally occurring. Tony is now in the process of passing the winemaking work to his son Nic Coturri.

Wine region

Mendocino County, California, USA

Sonoma Mountain is an AVA established in 1985, situated on the western edge of the Valley of the Moon above the town of Glen Ellen in Sonoma County. Vineyards range in elevation from 400 feet at the lower thermal belt boundary up to 2,400 feet on the steepest ridgelines. The mountain's eastern-facing exposures catch morning sun while sitting above the fog that settles on the Sonoma Valley floor below. A thermal belt phenomenon on the slopes produces higher minimum temperatures and lower maximum temperatures than valley-floor sites during the growing season, moderating the extremes and extending hang time.

Sonoma Mountain soils are predominantly volcanic in origin, composed of old lava flows and ash deposits that are thin, rocky, and free-draining. This low-fertility, well-drained profile stresses the vines and concentrates flavor in the fruit. The Albarello draws on certified organic Mendocino County vineyards to the north, a region with its own long history of old-vine Carignan and Zinfandel planted on similarly meager, well-drained hillside soils. Sonoma County as a whole contains 19 distinct AVAs spanning sea-level coastal benchland to mountain elevations above 2,000 feet, with more than 400 wineries producing a wide range of varietals anchored by Zinfandel, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Cabernet Sauvignon.
