Tasting notes

This is a field co-ferment of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from gravelly loam soils on Sonoma Mountain, finished in bottle with no additions — the result is crisp and earthy with tart red fruit, fine mousse, and a yeasty, mineral undertow. It drinks closer to a light, fizzy red than a conventional sparkling wine, with the kind of alive, unpolished texture that only méthode ancestrale can produce.

Acid Rain is a pétillant naturel from Dan Marioni sourced from a small vineyard on the slopes of the Sonoma Mountain AVA. The grapes — Pinot Noir and Chardonnay — are co-fermented together as a field blend on gravelly loam soils. The wine is made using méthode ancestrale: a single continuous fermentation that finishes in the bottle, trapping natural CO2 without any secondary fermentation additions.

Winemaking is zero-zero. Spontaneous fermentation in open-top stainless steel vats, no added sulfites, no fining, no filtration. The wine ages for approximately five months in bottle under lees before release. Expect gentle, fine bubbles with a slight haze from the residual yeast sediment.

The Sonoma Mountain AVA sits on the eastern slopes of the Sonoma Mountains above Glen Ellen, within the broader Sonoma Valley AVA. Vineyards here sit above the valley fog line, with higher minimum temperatures and lower daytime highs than the valley floor — a thermal belt effect that produces gradual ripening, naturally higher acidity, and concentrated fruit. Soils at vineyard level are gravelly loam, well-drained and low fertility.

This is Marioni's first vintage under his own label, released in 2019 the same year Sonoma Mtn Winery wound down and he launched Marioni Wine. Nothing added, nothing taken away.

Works well alongside charcuterie boards, fresh goat cheese, or a simple mushroom flatbread — the effervescence and bright acidity cut through fat and salt cleanly. Also a strong match for fried chicken or anything with a crunchy, savory crust. Serve well chilled at around 45-50F and pour gently to manage the sediment.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Dan Marioni

Dan Marioni is a fifth-generation Sonoma native and a former mechanical engineer who graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. In 2016, he went to Coturri Winery in Glen Ellen to observe harvest and stayed on to work alongside Nic Coturri, son of Tony Coturri, under the Sonoma Mtn Winery label. Tony Coturri is widely considered the foundational figure in California natural wine, and the Coturris have made zero-addition, dry-farmed wines in Sonoma since the 1960s. When Sonoma Mtn Winery closed in 2019, Marioni launched his own label.

All of Marioni's farming practices are organic. His estate vineyards are located primarily within the Sonoma Mountain AVA on Sobra Viste Road, with additional sourcing from sites in Sonoma Valley and the Petaluma Gap. He farms with cover crops, sheep grazing, and compost applications to build soil health, and aims to minimize irrigation and sulfur applications. He also works to restore older, degraded vineyard sites across Sonoma.

Marioni's winemaking follows what he calls the Coturri Way: nothing added and nothing taken away. Wines are fermented with native yeast, aged in neutral barrels or in bottle, and bottled without fining, filtration, or SO2. The Acid Rain Pet Nat is made via méthode ancestrale — co-fermented Pinot Noir and Chardonnay undergo a single continuous fermentation that finishes in bottle, producing natural carbonation. Winemaking takes place at Magnolia Wine Services in Sonoma.

Wine region

Sonoma County, USA

The Sonoma Mountain AVA was established in 1985 as a sub-appellation within the broader Sonoma Valley AVA. It sits on the eastern face of the Sonoma Mountains above the town of Glen Ellen, in the Valley of the Moon. Vineyards rise above the valley floor fog line, benefiting from a thermal belt effect: higher minimum temperatures and lower maximum temperatures than the valley below, which means slower, more even ripening and grapes that retain natural acidity. The primary soil association is Spreckels-Felta gravelly loam — shallow, well-drained, and low in fertility — which keeps vine vigor in check and concentrates fruit character.

Sonoma County contains 19 distinct AVAs spanning sea level to 2,600 feet, with climates ranging from cool maritime to warm inland valley. The Sonoma Mountain AVA is part of the Sonoma Valley wine region, flanked by the Mayacamas Mountains to the east. Most of Marioni's estate vineyards sit within Sonoma Mountain on Sobra Viste Road, with additional sites in Sonoma Valley and the Petaluma Gap AVAs. Key varieties grown across the county include Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, and Syrah, though Marioni focuses primarily on Pinot Noir and field blends from organically farmed mountain sites.
