Tasting notes

Montepulciano in a pet nat format is genuinely rare: the grape's natural depth gives this pale-fizzy format more stuffing than you'd expect, with wild raspberry, tart cherry skin, and a slightly chalky mousse that keeps every sip lively. At 10.5% it's one of the most food-flexible wines in the Indigeno lineup.

Vruzz Vino Rosato is Cantina Indigeno's petillant naturel rosé made from 100% Montepulciano grown organically near Montorio al Vomano in the Teramo province of Abruzzo. The wine is produced using the ancestral method: fermentation begins in tank, and the wine is bottled before it finishes, capturing CO2 from the primary ferment rather than a secondary addition. No dosage, no disgorgement, no added sulfites.

Grapes see brief overnight skin contact before pressing, which pulls just enough pigment for a deep-pink hue without adding heavy phenolics. After racking, the wine rests on its lees in fiberglass containers before bottling. The result is lightly fizzy, unfiltered, and cloudy in the glass with a persistent fine mousse.

Cantina Indigeno farms a combination of their own rented vineyards and fruit sourced from growers in the Teramo hills who work exclusively with copper and sulfur treatments. Winemaking is strictly non-interventionist: indigenous yeasts, no temperature control, no fining, no filtration, and zero added SO2. At 10.5% ABV, this sits on the lighter, fresher end of Montepulciano expressions, built around acidity and drinkability rather than weight.

Abruzzo's Teramo hills offer clay-limestone soils and significant day-night temperature variation, which preserves natural acidity even in a grape as deeply pigmented as Montepulciano. This wine is classified as Vino Frizzante under Italian law and carries no DOC or DOCG designation, fitting the broader Abruzzo IGT category common to natural producers in the region.

Works well with cured meats and charcuterie boards where the bubbles and acidity cut through fat. Try it with fried foods, arancini, or a simple tomato-based pasta where the wine's tartness mirrors the sauce. Good alongside fresh mozzarella or mild sheep's milk cheese.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Cantina Indigeno

Cantina Indigeno was founded in 2016 by four friends: Alfredo Giugno, Nicola Reginaldi, Fabio Petrella, and Loreto Lamolinara. The winery is based in Montorio al Vomano in the Teramo province of Abruzzo. Before starting the winery, Alfredo and Loreto had opened a microbrewery together in 2013, and Nicola worked as a sommelier and ran a pub in Teramo. Their background in fermentation, rather than conventional viticulture, directly shaped the winery's minimal-intervention approach. The project was also encouraged by their friendship with the Lammidia team, one of the earlier natural wine producers in the region.

The winery manages roughly 9 hectares of organically certified vineyards, with additional fruit sourced from growers in the Teramo hills who farm using only copper and sulfur treatments. Vine age averages around 30 years, grown on stony limestone soils. The primary varieties are Montepulciano and Trebbiano d'Abruzzo, with smaller amounts of Montonico and Pecorino also produced. Total production is approximately 15,000 bottles per year.

All winemaking at Cantina Indigeno follows a strict non-interventionist protocol: spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, no temperature control, no filtration, no fining, and zero added sulfur dioxide. Whites and rosés spend time on their lees in fiberglass containers before bottling. The Vruzz sparkling wines use the ancestral method, bottled before primary fermentation is complete to capture natural carbonation. The wines rarely exceed 12% ABV, with freshness and acidity as the primary stylistic goals.

Wine region

Abruzzo, Italy

Abruzzo runs along central-eastern Italy between the Apennine Mountains to the west and the Adriatic Sea to the east. More than 65% of the region is mountainous terrain, and the Apennines block westerly storm systems while the Adriatic provides a moderating maritime influence to coastal and hillside vineyards. The province of Teramo, in Abruzzo's north, sits at higher elevations with less fertile calcareous clay and limestone soils, generating cooler growing conditions and wines with stronger acidity and structure than those from the flatter, warmer Chieti province to the south.

The Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC, established in 1968, spans all four of Abruzzo's provinces and is the region's dominant appellation. Within it, the Colline Teramane DOCG, elevated in 2003, recognizes the superior quality potential of 30 communes in the Teramo hills, requiring a minimum of 90% Montepulciano and stricter yield limits. A separate Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo DOC, created in 2010, covers the region's distinctive deep-pink rosato style made from Montepulciano. Trebbiano d'Abruzzo DOC covers white wine production across the region. Natural winemakers in Abruzzo, particularly around Teramo, largely operate outside these appellations under Vino IGT designations, prioritizing spontaneous fermentation and zero additions over DOC compliance.
