Tasting notes

Sem Mal revives the historic Vinho Verde practice of in-bottle malolactic fermentation, giving it a fine natural perlage, a wet-stone mineral backbone, and vibrant citrus fruit without a single gram of added sulfur. At 11% ABV and bone dry, it drinks more like a natural pet-nat than any conventional Vinho Verde you have had before.

Sem Mal is a 70% Azal and 30% Arinto blend from the Sousa subregion of Vinho Verde, grown on granite and gravel soils at 200 to 300 meters elevation in Meinedo, Lousada. Vines range from 4 to 70+ years old, trained on both the traditional pergola (ramada) system and ascending unilateral cord. The grapes are hand-harvested, whole-bunch pressed, and fermented at 17°C in stainless steel tanks for 8 to 10 days.

What makes Sem Mal distinct from other Vinho Verde is the winemaking method: after fermentation, the wine is racked and bottled without filtration, allowing malolactic fermentation to complete in the bottle. This generates natural CO2 that keeps the wine fresh and eliminates the need for added sulfites. The result is a slightly fizzy, lightly cloudy white with 1.5 g/L residual sugar and 8.2 g/L total acidity.

The name is a double entendre: colloquially 'sem mal' means 'no harm,' but it also references the winemaking method, 'no mal(ic) acid,' since the malic acid converts during in-bottle MLF. No sulfites are added at any stage. The wine comes in at approximately 11% ABV, unfiltered, with only trace sulfur levels.

Pair with briny seafood, shellfish, fresh cheeses, or fried small fish. Gently invert the bottle before pouring to redistribute the fine sediment. Serve well chilled at 45 to 48°F.

The high acidity and natural salinity make this a natural match for grilled sardines, fried salt cod fritters, and briny clams or mussels. Fresh goat cheese and tempura vegetables also work well. Gently invert the bottle before pouring to homogenize the fine sediment.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

João Camizão

João Camizão is the fourth generation of a winemaking family based in Lousada, in the Sousa subregion of Vinho Verde. The family has produced wine in the Sousa and Amarante subregions since 1780. João trained as a telecommunications engineer and spent approximately two and a half years working in Bangalore, India, starting in 2009, before returning to Portugal to launch the Sem Igual project with his wife Leila in 2012. Their first commercial vintage was 2012, launched with around 600 bottles.

The winery is located at Meinedo, Lousada, in the Sousa subregion. Their vineyards total approximately 10 hectares, with vines ranging from 4 to 90+ years old, growing on granite and gravel soils between 200 and 300 meters elevation. South-facing slopes and two training systems are used: ascending unilateral cord for younger vines and the traditional pergola (ramada) system for the oldest parcels. The property went herbicide-free in 2017 and is transitioning toward full organic certification. A new winery was built on-site and opened in 2021.

The Sem Mal is produced by hand-harvesting into small boxes, whole-bunch pressing, and natural decantation before fermentation at 17°C for 8 to 10 days in stainless steel tanks. The wine is racked 10 days after fermentation and bottled without filtration, where malolactic fermentation completes in the bottle, generating natural CO2 and eliminating the need for added sulfites. The wine carries only trace sulfur levels and is not filtered. Sem Igual is a member of the Vinho Verde Young Projects group, a collaboration of four young independent producers working to reposition the region.

Wine region

Vinho Verde, Portugal

Vinho Verde is Portugal's largest DOC, covering approximately 21,000 hectares in the historic Minho province of northwestern Portugal. The region is divided into nine subregions: Amarante, Ave, Baião, Basto, Cávado, Lima, Monção e Melgaço, Paiva, and Sousa. All share a base of granite soils, but each subregion has a distinct microclimate. The Atlantic influence across most of the region drives high annual rainfall (averaging around 1,200mm), cool temperatures, and the bright natural acidity that defines the wines.

João Camizão's vineyards sit in the Sousa subregion, centered on Meinedo in Lousada, roughly 30 minutes from Porto. Sousa is a southern subregion known for Arinto (locally called Pedernã) and Azal, two native white varieties that thrive in its granitic, well-drained soils at 200 to 300 meters elevation. The DOC was formally demarcated in 1908 and granted official DOC status in 1984. White wines account for around 86% of production; the classic style is low in alcohol (typically 8.5 to 11% ABV), high in acidity, and carries a gentle perlage below one bar of CO2 pressure.
