Tasting notes

This is Gamay doing something you almost never see: a pétillant naturel from one of France's most obscure northern wine regions, with the bright red-fruit snap of the grape and a chalky mineral tension from the limestone-clay Blaissières slope. It drinks like a cross between a Beaujolais and a natural pét nat from the Loire, but with a distinctly Lorrain edge — taut, fresh, and a little stony.

Maison Crochet's Pét Native is a pétillant naturel made from 100% Gamay grown on the Blaissières slope in Bulligny, a village in the Toulois area of Lorraine, roughly 30 kilometers southwest of Nancy. The Blaissières parcel sits on limestone and clay soils, south-facing, which is the same hillside that gives the estate its best fruit for sparkling wine.

The wine is made by méthode ancestrale: direct press of whole clusters, spontaneous fermentation with native yeast, and bottled before fermentation finishes so the wine completes its second fermentation in bottle. No fining, no filtration, no added sulfites. The result is a lightly fizzy, low-intervention sparkling wine with natural sediment — open carefully and serve cold.

Maison Crochet produces this wine as a Vin de France, having deliberately left the Côtes de Toul AOC to work outside its regulatory constraints. That choice gives Wilfried Crochet freedom to vinify 100% Gamay as a pétillant naturel, a format the appellation rules would not permit. Gamay dominates the estate's plantings and is central to every sparkling wine they make.

Serve well chilled with charcuterie, fresh chèvre, or a simple tomato salad. The light bubbles and bright acidity work well alongside fried foods — think fried chicken, tempura vegetables, or fish and chips. It also holds its own alongside mild soft cheeses.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Maison Crochet

Lionel Crochet and Sandra Laval established the estate in Bulligny in 1991, beginning with 3.5 hectares of vines purchased in 1996. The domaine now works a total of 5 hectares spread across parcels in Bulligny and Housselmont-Allamps, south of Toul. Their son Wilfried, who holds an oenology degree from the University of Bordeaux and trained in Champagne, Burgundy, and the Rhône, joined the estate in 2016 and now leads winemaking.

Organic conversion began in 2017 on the white grape parcels, and the entire 5-hectare estate converted to organic farming in 2019. The estate grows four grapes: Gamay, Pinot Noir, Auxerrois, and Chardonnay. Gamay occupies the largest share of their vineyards. Soil management includes cover cropping between rows, and each parcel is vinified separately to preserve site expression.

Maison Crochet operates as a Vin de France producer, having formally exited the Côtes de Toul AOC. This allows complete latitude over grape varieties, blends, and winemaking style. For the Pét Native Gamay, the process is direct press of whole-cluster fruit from the Blaissières parcel, spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeast, and bottling before fermentation is complete to capture the second fermentation in bottle. The wine is unfined, unfiltered, and no sulfites are added.

Wine region

Lorraine, France

Lorraine sits in northeast France between Champagne and Alsace, in the Grand Est administrative region. The Côtes de Toul appellation covers roughly 98 hectares across eight communes in the Meurthe-et-Moselle department, with Bulligny at its southern end. Vineyards are planted on east- and south-facing slopes of the Côte de Meuse cuesta at elevations between 245 and 380 meters, sheltered from prevailing westerly winds. The continental climate brings cold, dry winters and warm summers with sunny autumns.

The subsoil of the Côtes de Toul is composed of Jurassic-era limestone and marl sediments laid down during the Oxfordian stage, roughly 146 to 154 million years ago. These calcareous soils drain well and limit vine vigor. Gamay is the dominant grape in the region, historically used for the area's signature Vin Gris — a pale pressed rosé — alongside Pinot Noir for reds and Auxerrois for whites. Maison Crochet produces wines as Vin de France, outside the AOC rules, which allows them to make single-varietal Gamay pétillant naturel that the appellation framework would not permit.
