Tasting notes

The split vinification, one-third full maceration and two-thirds brief skin contact, gives this pet-nat more texture than a typical frizzante without going full orange. Stone fruit aromatics and fresh herb notes come through clearly on a palate that stays dry, low-alcohol, and genuinely refreshing.

Cantina Indigeno's Malva Gas is a pétillant naturel made from 100% Malvasia di Candia grown on 20-year-old vines at around 200 meters elevation in the Colline Teramane hills near Teramo, Abruzzo. The vineyards face south and sit on sandy soils with sections of stone that aid drainage. Grapes are farmed organically using only copper and sulfur treatments in the vineyard.

Vinification splits the harvest: one-third of the mass macerates on skins through the end of fermentation, while the remaining two-thirds has only brief skin contact of a few hours. The two portions are then combined into a single cuvée. Fermentation is spontaneous with indigenous yeasts, with no temperature control, no fining, and no filtration. The wine is bottled before fermentation completes, capturing its bubbles in the ancestral method. Zero sulfur is added at any stage.

The result is a lightly sparkling, hazy white with a fine, persistent perlage. Expect aromatic notes of stone fruit, pineapple, and fresh herbs alongside a textural lift from lees contact. The palate is dry, fresh, and low in alcohol, keeping well under 12% ABV. About 1,890 bottles were produced of this cuvée.

The name Malva refers to the Malvasia grape, and Gas is a nod to the natural carbonation. This is a wine built for immediate drinking, though the producer notes it can surprise with a few years in the cellar.

Works well with delicate white fish, baked sea bass, and light seafood preparations where the wine's acidity cuts through without overpowering. Good alongside soft cheeses, charcuterie, or simple vegetable dishes. Serve well chilled at 8 to 10 degrees Celsius.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Producer profile

Cantina Indigeno

Cantina Indigeno was founded in 2016 by four friends: Nicola Reginaldi, a sommelier with a background running a wine bar in Teramo; Alfredo Giugno, an accountant who also brewed craft beer; Loreto Lamolinara, who had experience in craft beer distribution; and Fabio Petrella. The project started as a garage operation, initially aided by their friends at the Lammidia winery in Abruzzo. The first vintage in 2016 produced around 5,000 bottles, doubling with the 2017 vintage, and reaching approximately 25,000 bottles for the 2018 vintage following vineyard acquisitions. The winery later moved to Contrada Casette in Ancarano, in the Teramo province, where the estate now covers around nine hectares of contiguous vineyards plus additional scattered parcels totaling approximately thirteen planted hectares.

The estate's vineyards include vines ranging from twenty to fifty years old. Varieties planted include Montepulciano, Passerina, Trebbiano, Malvasia di Candia, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Gewurztraminer. Soils at the estate are primarily sandy with some stony sections that provide good drainage. Farming follows organic certification, with some biodynamic practices incorporated, including cover cropping with fava bean, mustard, and clover. For Malvasia grapes not yet grown on estate land, the team sources from trusted farmers in the Teramo hills who farm using only copper and sulfur treatments.

Winemaking at Cantina Indigeno is built around zero intervention: spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, no temperature control, no filtration, and no added sulfur or other additions. For the Malva Gas, one-third of the Malvasia harvest undergoes full maceration on skins through the end of fermentation, while two-thirds has only brief skin contact of a few hours. The two portions are combined into a single cuvée, then bottled before fermentation completes to capture natural carbonation in the ancestral method. The wine spends some months in stainless steel before bottling. Around 1,890 bottles were produced of this wine.

Wine region

Abruzzo, Italy

Abruzzo sits on Italy's central Adriatic coast, flanked by the Apennine Mountains to the west and the Adriatic Sea to the east. The region is nearly two-thirds mountains, and the contrast between coastal warmth and mountain elevation creates significant diurnal temperature variation, which preserves acidity in the grapes. The Colline Teramane hills in the province of Teramo, in the northern part of the region, are considered among Abruzzo's best growing areas. Located between the Gran Sasso National Park peaks and the Adriatic coast, these hills benefit from a microclimate shaped by both mountain air currents and maritime breezes. Soils here are primarily clay and limestone with some sandy sections.

Abruzzo holds two DOCGs: Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Colline Teramane, elevated to DOCG in 2003 and confined to 30 select communes in Teramo province, and Terre Tollesi/Tullum. The region's most important DOCs include Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, Trebbiano d'Abruzzo, and Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo, Italy's only dedicated rosé DOC. The dominant native red grape is Montepulciano; for whites, Trebbiano d'Abruzzo leads, followed by Pecorino, Passerina, and Malvasia. Wines made outside appellation rules, including many natural and low-intervention wines, are labeled under the flexible Colli Aprutini IGT designation.
