Tasting notes

This is Lambrusco as it existed before commercial production flattened the category: dark ruby, slightly cloudy, with a wild edge of forest floor and spice underneath the berry fruit. The ancestral method keeps the bubbles fine and the wine genuinely dry, with a tannic grip on the finish that makes it food-friendly rather than frivolous.

  • Similar To: For fans of natural Gamay and Pet-Nat who want a savory, tannic edge and zero intervention

Podere Magia's Lambrusco is 100% Lambrusco Maestri grown on alluvial soils with silica in the flat land between the villages of Bibbiano and San Polo d'Enza, in the province of Reggio Emilia. Farming is strictly biodynamic, with no synthetic inputs at any stage. The wine is classified IGT Emilia (Lambrusco dell'Emilia IGT).

This is a Metodo Ancestrale wine, meaning the wine is bottled before primary fermentation is complete, allowing the second fermentation to finish in the bottle without disgorgement. At Podere Magia, the second fermentation is triggered by adding frozen must to the wine; bottling takes place around February or March in accordance with biodynamic lunar calendar principles. No fining, no filtration, and zero sulfur dioxide at any stage of production.

In the glass, it pours a deep ruby-violet with fine, persistent bubbles. The nose leads with dark berry fruit, wild strawberry, aromatic herbs, and forest floor. On the palate, it has a good structure for a Lambrusco, with lively acidity, a slight tannic grip on the finish, and a balsamic, spiced undercurrent. Serve well-chilled.

Podere Magia produces three labels in total: this Lambrusco, a Trebbiano-based white, and a Spergola. Annual production is small, around 15,000 bottles across the range.

The classic pairing in Emilia-Romagna is cured meats: salami, mortadella, or Prosciutto di Parma, where the wine's acidity cuts fat and the tannins come into balance. It also works with fried foods, lentil dishes with pork sausage, and aged Parmigiano-Reggiano. Serve well-chilled, around 45-50F.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Podere Magia

Podere Magia, which translates as 'Magic Farm', was founded in 2013 by Stefano Pescarmona on the outskirts of San Polo d'Enza, in the province of Reggio Emilia. Before starting the estate, Pescarmona had a long career as an agronomist and biodynamics expert, holding academic and consulting positions at the University of Gastronomic Sciences in Pollenzo and at UC Berkeley, and working as a Demeter inspector. He trained as a winemaker in the Banyuls region of southern France.

The estate covers 3 hectares planted to Lambrusco Maestri, Trebbiano Romagnolo, Spergola, and Malvasia Aromatica di Candia. The vineyards sit on flat alluvial terrain between Bibbiano and San Polo d'Enza, on soils of medium grain with notable silica content. All farming is biodynamic, with no synthetic inputs used at any stage in vineyard or cellar.

All wines at Podere Magia are refermented in the bottle using the Metodo Ancestrale. The Lambrusco is vinified from 100% Lambrusco Maestri, fermented with native yeasts, and bottled before primary fermentation finishes. A second fermentation is initiated by adding frozen must; bottling typically happens around February or March following biodynamic lunar calendar timing. The wine is never fined, never filtered, and no SO2 is added at any point. Three labels are produced in total across the estate.

Wine region

Emilia-Romagna, Italy

Emilia-Romagna stretches across northern Italy from the Apennine foothills in the south to the Po Valley plains in the north, with the River Po forming much of the region's northern boundary. The western sub-region of Emilia, where Podere Magia is located, has a subcontinental climate: cold, foggy winters and hot, humid summers. Soils in the Po Valley lowlands are predominantly deep, fertile clay and alluvium, though the area around San Polo d'Enza near the Apennine foothills contains medium-grain alluvial soils with higher silica content and greater drainage.

The region holds 19 DOCs and 2 DOCGs (Albana di Romagna and Colli Bolognesi Classico Pignoletto), though only about 15% of total production falls under DOC or DOCG classification. Lambrusco is the most widely planted and produced wine type in Emilia, with five principal Lambrusco DOCs: Lambrusco Grasparossa di Castelvetro, Lambrusco Salamino di Santa Croce, Lambrusco di Sorbara, Modena DOC, and Reggiano DOC. Producers working outside these DOC boundaries or using methods that deviate from DOC rules, as Podere Magia does with the ancestral method, label their wines under the broader IGT Emilia designation. The dominant grape varieties across the region include Lambrusco, Trebbiano, Malvasia, Barbera, Bonarda, and Sangiovese.
