Tasting notes

This is one of the most unusual field-blend pet nats you will find from central Italy — five co-harvested varieties including the aromatic, Muscat-related Aleatico, which pushes rose petal and wild berry notes through the fine bubble structure. The frozen-must addition before bottling gives the mousse a soft, textured quality rather than aggressive fizz.

Ceppafrizz is a field-blend petillant naturel rosato from Piccolo Podere del Ceppaiolo, a 1.7-hectare plot in Bastia Umbra, Perugia province, farmed by Danilo Marcucci and Riccardo Pennaforti. The vines — up to 70 years old — grow on calcareous clay soils at around 400 meters above sea level and include Trebbiano, Malvasia, Aleatico, Vernaccia Rossa, and Montepulciano, all co-harvested and co-fermented together.

The wine undergoes spontaneous fermentation and is aged in cement. Before bottling in spring, frozen must from the original harvest is added to trigger a second fermentation in the bottle — the traditional méthode ancestrale process. The wine is not disgorged, filtered, or fined, and no sulfur is added at any stage. Production for this vintage was 1,300 bottles.

The result pours a deep coral pink with fine, gentle bubbles. Aleatico brings its characteristic rose and wild berry aromatics; Vernaccia Rossa (genetically linked to Aleatico in this region) adds spice; Trebbiano and Malvasia contribute freshness and texture. At 11.5% ABV, it finishes dry with lively acidity and a slightly yeasty, saline edge from the in-bottle refermentation.

Serve well chilled with fried local olives, charcuterie, or a simple plate of prosciutto and melon. The gentle bubbles and dry finish work well alongside light pasta dishes with fresh herbs or a soft goat's milk cheese. Drink young — this is not a wine to cellar.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Ceppaiolo

Piccolo Podere del Ceppaiolo is a 1.7-hectare plot in Bastia Umbra, in the Perugia province of Umbria, run by Danilo Marcucci and Riccardo Pennaforti. Marcucci, widely referred to in Italian natural wine circles as the 'Yoda of natural wine,' treats Ceppaiolo as an experimental side project separate from his consulting work advising producers across Italy. The two found the abandoned site and chose to revive it specifically because of its 70-year-old vines, among the oldest in the local area.

The vineyard is planted with a mix of old indigenous Umbrian varieties on calcareous clay soils at approximately 400 meters above sea level. Approximately one hectare hosts red varieties, including Montepulciano, Aleatico, and Vernaccia Rossa; the rest is planted to whites including Trebbiano (Trebbiano Spoletino and Trebbiano Dorato), Malvasia, Grechetto, and Uva Pecora. No synthetic chemical products are used in the vineyard. The property has no electricity or running water in the cellar.

Winemaking takes place in a stone shed using original 1950s equipment, including an old vertical press — the only mechanical intervention used. Fermentations are spontaneous. Wines are aged in cement or fiberglass depending on the cuvee. The Ceppafrizz is made by the méthode ancestrale: the base wine ferments in cement, then frozen must from the original harvest is added before bottling in spring to trigger in-bottle refermentation. No sulfur is added, and no filtering or fining is done. Each bottling is produced in very small quantities; the 2018 Ceppafrizz ran to 1,300 bottles. Marcucci and Pennaforti do not replicate the same wine each vintage.

Wine region

Umbria, Italy

Umbria is a landlocked region in central Italy, bordered by Tuscany, Lazio, and Marche. Two valleys — the Umbrian Valley and the Tiber Valley — cross the region and provide the primary viticulture zones. The climate is Mediterranean with continental influence: hot, often windy summers and cool, wet winters, which slow ripening and help preserve natural acidity in the grapes. Soils across the region are predominantly calcareous clay and sand, varying from the clay-limestone hillsides around Perugia and Montefalco to the volcanic tuff soils of Orvieto.

Umbria holds two DOCGs — Torgiano Rosso Riserva (Sangiovese-based) and Montefalco Sagrantino (the Sagrantino grape, unique to the region) — plus 13 DOCs and 6 IGTs, of which the region-wide Umbria IGT is the most flexible. The IGT classification is the natural home for producers like Piccolo Podere del Ceppaiolo, whose multi-variety field blends fall outside DOC rules. Key white grapes include Grechetto, Trebbiano Spoletino, and Malvasia; key reds include Sagrantino, Sangiovese, Montepulciano, and the rare, aromatic Aleatico.
