Tasting notes

This is one of the more site-specific frizzantes you'll find: three nearly-extinct Trentino varieties grown at 700+ meters on sasso dolomitico soils, clarified in winter snow, and aged two years on the lees in bottle. The texture is chalky and alive, with lemon peel and alpine florals that are unmistakably of that altitude.

Alpino Frizzante is a pet-nat-style white sparkling wine from Cantina Furlani, made from three rare indigenous Trentino varieties: Nosiola, Verderbara, and Lagarino Bianco. The vines grow in small parcels around the village of Povo, directly above the city of Trento, at 700 to 720 meters elevation on clay soils over schist and broken granite — locally called sasso dolomitico. Vines are trained in the traditional pergola trentina system and farmed biodynamically with no synthetic inputs of any kind.

In the cellar, grapes are pressed and ferment spontaneously in stainless steel with no added yeasts, no temperature control, and no sulfur. The wine is then racked into demijohns and left outside in the snow during winter, using the cold to clarify naturally. In spring, frozen must from harvest is added to trigger bottle refermentation. The wine ages sur lie in bottle for approximately two years with no disgorgement, no filtration, and no fining.

The result is hazy, gently sparkling, and bone dry. Expect alpine white flowers, green apple, lemon peel, and a chalky mineral edge from the sasso dolomitico soils. The bubbles are soft and persistent, and the finish is clean with good grip from the lees contact. At around 11.5% ABV, it drinks with effortless lightness.

Works well with fresh cheeses like robiola or caprino, lightly dressed seafood crudo, or vegetable antipasti. The high acidity and fine effervescence cut through fat and salt cleanly. Also good alongside fried foods — the bubbles and minerality reset the palate between bites.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

Producer profile

Furlani

Cantina Furlani is a small family estate based in the village of Povo, directly above the city of Trento, with vineyards spread across several parcels at 700 to 720 meters above sea level — also extending to slopes on the Vigolana plateau. The winery traces its origins to 1740, and Matteo Furlani is the fourth generation to work the land. He studied agronomy at the Agricultural Institute of San Michele before taking over the estate, learning winemaking from his father Fabio and grandfather Lido rather than from formal oenology training.

Matteo's predecessors never used synthetic chemicals, and Matteo has gone further by incorporating biodynamic preparations and methodologies throughout the vineyards. Soils are surface clay over schist and broken granite — known locally as sasso dolomitico — and all vines are trained in the traditional pergola trentina system to maximize ventilation and sun exposure. The estate spans approximately 3 to 6 hectares across multiple small parcels, and Matteo also farms cherries and apples alongside the vines on these steep alpine slopes.

In the cellar, fermentations occur in cement tanks or glass demijohns with no temperature control, no added yeasts, and no sulfur at any stage. For the frizzante and pet-nat wines, base wines are fermented spontaneously, then racked into demijohns and placed outside in the snow over winter to clarify by cold settling. Frozen must from harvest is added in spring to trigger bottle refermentation. The wines age sur lie in bottle with no disgorgement, no filtration, and no fining — often for two years or more before release. The 2018 Alpino was made in collaboration with natural wine consultant Danilo Marcucci.

Wine region

Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy

Trentino-Alto Adige is Italy's northernmost wine region, bordering Austria to the north and flanked by the Dolomites. It divides into two distinct sub-zones: the Italian-speaking Trentino in the south and the German-speaking Alto Adige (Südtirol) in the north. The region's vineyards occupy steep hillsides and valley floors carved by the Adige River, with elevations ranging from around 200 meters near the valley floor to over 900 meters in the highest alpine parcels. The combination of cool alpine nights and warm, sun-filled days gives the wines their characteristic tension between ripeness and freshness.

Trentino has historically produced Teroldego and Marzemino as its signature reds, alongside the native white Nosiola, which is used both for dry wines and for the rare Vino Santo passito. The region holds several DOC designations including Trentino DOC, and is also the home of Trento DOC, Italy's most established appellation for traditional-method sparkling wine. A small but growing cohort of natural and biodynamic producers in the hills above Trento — including Cantina Furlani — work with nearly-forgotten indigenous varieties such as Verderbara, Lagarino Bianco, and Pavana, keeping them from commercial extinction.
