Description

Laherte Frères Ultradition Extra-Brut blends 60% Pinot Meunier, 30% Chardonnay, and 10% Pinot Noir from Côteaux sud d'Epernay, Vallée de la Marne and Côte des Blancs on clay over chalky subsoils. Sixty percent of the vins clairs are barrel-fermented, go through partial malolactic fermentation, and the cuvée includes 40% reserve wines. Seventh generation winegrower Aurélien Laherte practices organic and biodynamic viticulture, vinifying without malolactic fermentation in used Burgundy barrels, bottled without fining and filtration. The wine ages three and a half years sur latte before disgorgement with a dosage of 4.5 grams per liter.

Tasting notes

White peach, apple, bread dough, chalky soil tones and delicate meunier flowers emerge on the nose. The palate is crisp, full-bodied and complex, with excellent balance and grip, refined mousse, displaying citrus zest, pear, fresh bread, white flowers and almonds.

Food pairings

The wine's rose-pink color and red-apple fruit with mineral precision pairs exquisitely with Spanish jamón ibérico.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package gets returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee to be determined based on shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive, we are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to re-route a package after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancelling fee – the amount depends on how big the order is. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat/frost-related issues. for heat we offer ice-packs upon request. please let us know should you think that there could be heat-related issues. again, if we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

Producer profile

Laherte Freres

Laherte Frères is a Champagne house founded in 1889 by Jean-Baptiste Laherte in Chavot-Courcourt, located in the Côteaux Sud d'Epernay. The estate is currently managed by seventh-generation vigneron Aurélien Laherte, who took control in 2005 after joining the family business in 2002. The house cultivates 11 hectares across more than 75 parcels in the Côteaux Sud d'Epernay, Côte des Blancs, and Vallée de la Marne.

Under Aurélien's direction, Laherte Frères has transitioned to organic and biodynamic viticulture. Seven hectares are certified biodynamic, with remaining parcels farmed organically or sustainably. The estate is legally classified as Négociant Manipulant (NM) as it purchases approximately 40% of its grapes, including biodynamically farmed Pinot Noir from the Montagne de Reims.

The house produces 150,000 bottles annually, with the Ultradition line (Brut, Extra Brut, and Rosé) serving as flagship cuvées. Single-vineyard, single-vintage cuvées are produced in limited quantities of approximately 3,000 bottles each. Winemaking employs indigenous yeasts, with 60% of wines fermented in neutral oak barrels and foudres. Most cuvées avoid malolactic fermentation to preserve freshness. Wines are bottled without fining or filtration and finished with minimal dosage, typically 4-5 grams per liter for Extra Brut styles.

Wine region

Champagne, France

The Champagne wine region is located in northeastern France, approximately 150 kilometers east of Paris. The region covers 34,000 hectares of vineyards across five main areas: Montagne de Reims, Vallée de la Marne, Côte des Blancs, Côte de Sézanne, and Côte des Bar (Aube). The appellation is legally defined and protected, with only wines produced within this delimited area permitted to use the name Champagne.

The region's terroir is characterized by its chalky subsoil, primarily composed of belemnite and micraster chalk formed during the Cretaceous period. This chalk layer can extend up to 300 meters deep, providing excellent drainage while retaining sufficient moisture for vine growth. The topsoil varies across the region, including clay, marl, sand, and lignite.

Champagne experiences a dual climate influence: continental from the east bringing cold winters and warm summers, and oceanic from the west contributing mild temperatures and regular rainfall. Average annual temperature is 10°C, with 650-700mm of annual precipitation. The region sits at the northern limit for viticulture, between 48°-49.5° latitude.

Seven grape varieties are authorized for Champagne production: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Arbane, and Petit Meslier. The first three varieties account for 99.7% of plantings. Chardonnay represents 31% of vineyard area, Pinot Noir 38%, and Pinot Meunier 31%.

The méthode champenoise requires secondary fermentation in bottle, followed by aging on lees, riddling, and disgorgement. Champagne styles include: Non-Vintage (blending multiple years), Vintage (single year), Blanc de Blancs (100% white grapes), Blanc de Noirs (100% black grapes), and Rosé. Sweetness levels range from Brut Nature (no added sugar) through Doux (over 50g/L residual sugar).
