Sustainable Handmade Low-sulfites Low-intervention
Description

La Lleona by Tanca Els Ulls is an organic orange wine from Tarragona, Catalonia, crafted from 100% Cartoixà de Marina (also known as Xarel·lo Vermell). The grapes are sourced from a single vineyard adjacent to the Gaià River, characterized by limestone and alluvial soils with pebbles. The proximity to the Mediterranean Sea imparts a cooling influence, preserving the grapes' acidity. After hand-harvesting, the grapes undergo a six-day skin maceration in stainless steel tanks, followed by pressing and four months of aging on fine lees. The wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered, with minimal sulfur added.

Tasting notes

La Lleona exhibits aromas of dried yellow flowers and green olives. On the palate, it offers flavors of orange, melon, and under-ripe cantaloupe, complemented by a saline minerality. The wine is light to medium-bodied, with a silky structure, medium acidity, and a crisp, clean finish.

Food pairings

This wine pairs beautifully with Esqueixada, a traditional Catalan salad of shredded salt cod, tomatoes, onions, and olives.

Producer profile

Tanca Els Ulls

Tanca Els Ulls is a natural winery located in Nulles, a small village in Catalonia's Alt Camp region, southwest of Barcelona. Established in 2014 by winemaker Francesc "Cesc" Boronat, the winery focuses on reviving old vineyards once tended by his grandfather. The name "Tanca Els Ulls," meaning "close your eyes" in Catalan, reflects the bold leap of faith required to rejuvenate a family-run operation in an area where active wineries had become scarce.

The estate spans vineyards characterized by clay and limestone soils, benefiting from the Mediterranean climate and proximity to the sea, which provides cooling breezes. Boronat cultivates indigenous grape varieties such as Cartoixà (Xarel·lo), Macabeu, and Garnatxa, adhering to organic farming practices that emphasize environmental respect and sustainability.

In the cellar, Boronat employs minimal intervention techniques to authentically express the terroir. Grapes are hand-harvested, undergo spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, and are often macerated on their skins to enhance complexity. Aging takes place in a combination of stainless steel tanks and amphorae, with wines bottled unfined and unfiltered, and minimal sulfur added only when necessary.

Tanca Els Ulls produces a range of distinctive wines, including the Malvasia, a fresh and saline white; the Cartoixà de Vinyes Velles, an orange wine from 80-year-old vines; and the Garnatxa, a light, semi-carbonic red. Each wine reflects the winery's commitment to showcasing the unique characteristics of the Penedès terroir through natural and sustainable practices.

Wine region

Penedès, Spain

Penedès, located west of Barcelona in Catalunya, Spain, is a key player in the natural wine world. Recognized as Catalunya's most vital wine district, Penedès boasts the prestigious DO (Denominación de Origen) status. This region is globally celebrated for producing outstanding Cava sparkling wines, crafted using the traditional Champenoise method.

In Penedès, the Mediterranean climate shapes the terroir, featuring mild winters and hot summers. The region is divided into three subregions: Baix Penedès (Low Penedès), Medio Penedès (Middle Penedès), and Alt Penedès (High Penedès). Each area presents unique climatic variations, influenced by factors like altitude and proximity to the coast. The soil composition in Penedès is diverse, predominantly calcareous, but also includes sandy and clayey varieties.

The red wines of Penedès are typically blends of local grape varieties. The main red grape, Tempranillo, is complemented by Garnacha (Garnatxa), Monastrell, and Carinena. Penedès winemakers have been innovatively blending these native varietals with international grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, producing increasingly notable results.

As for white wines, Penedès is expanding its repertoire beyond its famous Cava. Traditional native varietals like Xarel-lo, Macabeo, and Parellada, typically used in Cava production, are now also being crafted into delightful still wines. The introduction of Chardonnay, both in Cava blends and as a standalone varietal for still wines, is a growing trend in the region, adding a new dimension to Penedès's natural wine offerings.
