Tasting notes

Ruby-red with a garnet edge and clear transparency. The nose is fragrant and mineral, with dark cherry, dried rose, iron-tinged volcanic earth, dried herbs, and a subtle note of tobacco. On the palate, medium-to-full-bodied, with firm acidity, structured tannins, dark cherry fruit, and a long mineral finish.

BodyFruitTanninAcidity
  • Style: Dry, medium-to-full-bodied red with the high natural acidity and dark cherry character typical of Sangiovese, here shaped by volcanic iron-rich soils into something more mineral and earthy than Sangiovese from the more celebrated Tuscan zones
  • Grapes & terroir: 100% Sangiovese (known locally as Greghetto); organically and biodynamically farmed volcanic iron-rich soils at approximately 1,475 ft elevation in Gradoli, Province of Viterbo, northern Lazio; situated on the volcanic plateau surrounding Lake Bolsena, Europe's largest volcanic lake; all vineyard work done by hand; no synthetic inputs of any kind
  • Winemaking: Spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts only; aged in neutral oak barrels; unfined, unfiltered; no added sulfites; no additions at any stage
  • Serving temperature & decanting: Serve at 62–65°F; decant 20–30 minutes; the wine opens up considerably with air
  • Pairing: Pasta all'Amatriciana (Roman pasta with guanciale and tomato)
  • Similar to: Natural Sangiovese from Tuscany in a mineral style, Rosso from Montepulciano in a leaner expression, Negroamaro from Salento in volcanic-mineral register

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Le Coste

Le Coste di Gradoli was founded in 2004 by Gianmarco Antonuzzi and Clémentine Bouveron on the volcanic plateau above Lake Bolsena, in Gradoli, where Gianmarco grew up spending summers in the village that bears its name. The estate started from three hectares of abandoned land and has grown to approximately 14 hectares encompassing vineyards, olive groves, chestnut trees, oak woodland, and orchards — a genuine polyculture that mirrors the farming traditions of the Etruscan plateau before industrial monoculture took hold.

Gianmarco and Clémentine met in Alsace, where Gianmarco had been working at Bruno Schueller's domaine as part of a winemaking education that also included time with Didier Barral in the Languedoc, Jean-Paul Thévenet in Beaujolais, and Philippe Pacalet in Burgundy. Clémentine came from a scientific and agricultural background. Together they returned to Gradoli with a clear vision: farm the volcanic plateau organically and biodynamically, work exclusively with indigenous varieties (many nearly extinct), and make wine with no additions at any stage.

The vineyards are planted at densities reaching 10,000 vines per hectare in some parcels — a density requiring all work to be done by hand. Many blocks contain ungrafted vines and massale selections from old plantings, preserving the genetic diversity of the local viticultural heritage. The cellar operates from an ancient building in the center of Gradoli village, where fermentations are spontaneous and aging vessels include old oak barrels, large botti, fiberglass, and cement — chosen wine by wine based on what each cuvée needs, with no additions ever. The philosophy is absolute: no sulfites, no fining, no filtration, no compromises.

Le Coste Rosso Sangiovese is among the estate's most direct expressions of the volcanic terroir, built from a single variety and shaped entirely by the iron-rich volcanic soils and the quiet, patient winemaking that defines everything Gianmarco and Clémentine do.

Wine region

Lazio, Italy

Gradoli sits on the volcanic plateau of northern Lazio, on the northwestern shore of Lake Bolsena in the Province of Viterbo. Lake Bolsena is Europe's largest volcanic lake, formed when an ancient Etruscan-era crater collapsed, and the plateau surrounding it is built on the same volcanic tuff and iron-rich mineral deposits that characterize the landscape from the lake's edge to the surrounding hillsides and ancient villages. Gradoli itself sits at roughly 1,475 feet above sea level, overlooking the lake on its northwestern shore.

This corner of Lazio was one of the most densely settled territories of the Etruscan civilization, and archaeological evidence of winemaking here predates Roman settlement by centuries. The local wine tradition was formally recognized in 1972 with the establishment of the Aleatico di Gradoli DOC — one of the older Italian wine appellations — specifically for sweet and dry wines from the Aleatico grape. But the volcanic plateau also grows Sangiovese (here called Greghetto), Canaiolo, Colorino, Malvasia, Procanico, and a range of other ancient varieties, some nearly unique to this specific area.

The soils are a key part of what makes this territory distinctive for viticulture. Volcanic tuff — a porous, iron-rich material deposited during ancient eruptions — dominates the plateau. It drains freely, retains warmth, and gives wines grown on it a distinctive mineral, slightly metallic character that sets them apart from the same varieties grown on clay or limestone. The microclimate is not quite Mediterranean — the altitude moderates summer heat and the lake creates its own temperature regulation — and not fully continental. It occupies a mild, in-between zone that allows slow, even ripening and produces wines with natural structural balance.
