Tasting notes

Dark ruby with a clear, lively rim. The nose shows red cherry, wild berry, dried herbs, orange zest, and an earthy, mineral undertone from the volcanic soils. On the palate, the wine is fresh and direct, with soft tannins, a balsamic note, and a clean, persistent finish.

  • Style: medium to full-bodied red with fresh acidity, soft tannins, and a mineral, volcanic character; dry and food-friendly, with more finesse than weight
  • Grapes & terroir: 100% Grechetto Rosso (a local variant of Sangiovese), from sandy volcanic soils at 250 to 450 m altitude on the southern slopes of Lake Bolsena near Montefiascone and Marta; biodynamic farming since 2017; vines from Marco Fucini's family vineyard
  • Winemaking: Hand-harvested; destemmed; 10 days skin maceration in cement vats; spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts; no temperature control; 10 months in stainless steel and cement tanks; bottled unfined, unfiltered, no added sulfur
  • Serving temperature & decanting: Serve at 59 to 62°F; no decanting necessary, though 15 minutes in the glass lets the wine open up; serve with a slight chill if desired
  • Pairing: Saltimbocca alla Romana
  • Similar to: A lighter-styled natural Sangiovese from Tuscany or a minimal-intervention Canaiolo-based red from central Italy, with the added mineral tension of volcanic terroir

Il Vinco Le Capannacce Rosso 2019 is a natural red wine produced from 100% Grechetto Rosso, a local variant of Sangiovese indigenous to the hills around Lake Bolsena in northern Lazio. The grapes come from a family vineyard belonging to producer Marco Fucini, planted on sandy volcanic soils at 250 to 450 meters above sea level on the southern shore of the lake near Montefiascone. After hand-harvesting, the grapes are destemmed and macerated on the skins for ten days in cement vats with spontaneous fermentation and no temperature control. Il Vinco Le Capannacce Rosso 2019 is then aged for ten months in stainless steel and cement tanks, and bottled unfined, unfiltered, and without added sulfur.

Saltimbocca alla Romana, spaghetti all'amatriciana, roast pork with herbs, lamb skewers, grilled merguez, cacio e pepe, charcuterie, lentil soup.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Il Vinco

Il Vinco is a small natural wine project founded in 2014 by three friends from the Lake Bolsena area: Daniele Manoni, Marco Fucini, and Nicola Brenciaglia. The winery is based between Marta and Montefiascone in the province of Viterbo. The name refers to the pliable willow branch, known locally as "il vinco," traditionally used to tie grapevines to their stakes, an image that connects the project directly to the manual agricultural traditions of the area.

The founding impulse was to recover and work seriously with Canaiolo Nero, an indigenous red variety that was historically grown around the lake but had been largely abandoned as producers shifted toward higher-volume international and Tuscany-oriented varieties. With assistance from Andrea Occhipinti, a fellow Lazio producer who allowed them the use of his cellar in the early years, the three partners began farming roughly 2.5 hectares of old-vine Canaiolo near Capodimonte sul Lago di Bolsena. The estate has since grown to approximately 3 hectares and now includes Grechetto Rosso, Procanico, Rossetto, Malvasia Bianca Lunga, Aleatico, and other indigenous varieties. The first vintage was 2015.

Since 2017, the estate has followed biodynamic principles, using only copper and sulfur where necessary and carrying out all vineyard work by hand. In the cellar, the philosophy is consistent: spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, no temperature control, cement and stainless steel vessels, no fining, no filtration, and no added sulfur. Production is small, around 10,000 bottles annually. Le Capannacce, made from Grechetto Rosso grown in Marco Fucini's family vineyard, was introduced alongside the Canaiolo-based Canajò as the estate's second red wine.

Wine region

Lazio, Italy

Lake Bolsena sits in the province of Viterbo in northern Lazio, roughly 120 kilometers north of Rome, within the caldera of Monte Volsinii, an ancient and now dormant volcanic complex. At 114 square kilometers, it is the largest volcanic lake in Europe and one of the cleanest in Italy. The lake moderates the local climate significantly, tempering summer heat and winter cold, creating a distinctive microclimate that extends the growing season and allows grapes to develop complexity while retaining natural acidity.

The soils around the lake are the defining feature of the terroir. They are primarily volcanic in origin, composed of sandy tuff, pumice, and mineral-rich ash deposits that drain well, limit vine vigor, and impart a characteristic mineral tension to the wines produced here. Depending on elevation and aspect, the soils vary from lighter sandy profiles near the lakeshore to more compact volcanic clay higher up the slopes. The vineyards of Il Vinco sit on the southern shore, between the towns of Marta and Montefiascone, at elevations between 250 and 450 meters, where the combination of altitude, volcanic soils, and lake influence is particularly pronounced.

Montefiascone is historically known for the Est! Est!! Est!!! DOC, one of the oldest denominations in Italy, traditionally made from Procanico (Trebbiano Toscano), Rossetto, and Malvasia Bianca Lunga. The area's identity has long been tied to white wine, but a new generation of producers, including Il Vinco, Le Coste in nearby Gradoli, and Andrea Occhipinti, has drawn international attention to the zone's potential for natural reds made from indigenous varieties like Canaiolo Nero and Grechetto Rosso.
