Tasting notes

Vibrant ruby with a violet edge. The nose is fresh and direct: crushed wild strawberry, red cherry, dried rosemary, and a hint of black pepper. On the palate, bright red fruit is framed by soft tannins, lively acidity, and an earthy, mineral finish with a faint spice lift.

Both varieties are hand-harvested together, foot-trodden whole, and co-fermented with native yeasts in traditional underground cement tanks known as trulls. Celler Frisach Terra Alta Abrunet Negre 2024 rests on skins for one week, then is stabilized by winter cold before bottling unfined, unfiltered, and without added sulfites at 12.5% ABV.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Celler Frisach

Celler Frisach is run by Francesc and Joan Ferré, two brothers from Corbera d'Ebre, a small town in the Terra Alta DO perched above the Ebro River. Their family has farmed land in this area organically for more than two centuries. The surname Frisach belonged to their great-grandfather, and still marks the family house on the main street of the village. For most of the family's winemaking history, the harvest went to the local cooperative, as was true for the majority of Terra Alta's growers through the second half of the 20th century.

The break came in 2009, when Francesc completed his oenology studies and he and Joan decided to bottle under their own name. Independent family wineries were uncommon in the appellation at that point, and the region's international profile was still limited. What the brothers had going for them was the vineyard: 40 hectares of certified organic estate vines planted at elevation around Corbera d'Ebre, with old head-trained vines of Garnacha Blanca, Garnacha Fina, Garnacha Peluda, Garnacha Gris, Cariñena, and the rare indigenous variety Morenillo. Many of these vines predate the brothers' own careers in wine.

In the cellar, Francesc works with the trulls, traditional underground cement fermentation tanks built by earlier generations of the family, which maintain naturally cool and stable temperatures without mechanical control. This, combined with foot-treading whole grapes, native yeast co-fermentation, and a philosophy of adding nothing to the wine at any point, produces wines that are genuinely site-specific and transparent.

Celler Frisach has built a following across Barcelona's natural wine bar circuit and in export markets including the United States and the United Kingdom. Several of their cuvées reference the Spanish Civil War history of the surrounding landscape, including the name Abrunet, which comes from a local Catalan word referring to the scrubland typical of the Terra Alta hills.

Wine region

Catalonia, Spain

Terra Alta, Catalan for "high land," is the most southerly and most inland of Catalonia's wine appellations, covering around 11,000 acres across 12 municipalities in the southern Tarragona province. The zone sits between two spurs of the Catalan Pre-Coastal Range, along the Ebro River basin where it bends south toward the Valencian Community. The landscape is wild and austere: scrubby hillsides, limestone outcrops, and terraced vineyards laid out by generations of small family farmers who had few other viable crops in this dry, stony terrain. Most vineyards sit at between 985 and 1,150 ft above sea level, with peaks in the surrounding ranges reaching over 3,100 ft.

The climate combines Mediterranean and continental influences. Summer days are long, hot, and dry, but the altitude tempers the heat compared to the lowland plains. The Cierzo, a dry northwesterly wind from the Ebro Valley, and the Garbinada, a southwesterly from the Mediterranean, sweep through the vineyards regularly, keeping humidity low and reducing disease pressure across growing seasons. This makes organic viticulture both practical and historically common in Terra Alta, where small estates have long farmed without intensive chemical programs simply because conditions allowed it.

Soils are predominantly clay-limestone, with high calcium content and in many cases a subsoil layer of panal, a porous material derived from fossilized marine sand dunes. Around Corbera d'Ebre, where Celler Frisach is based, calcium-rich clay-limestone soils are interspersed with quartz veins that give wines an additional mineral edge. The area carries heavy historical weight: the Battle of the Ebro, the longest campaign of the Spanish Civil War, was fought across these hills in 1938. Walking these vineyards, you are never far from that history.

Terra Alta is internationally best known for Garnacha Blanca, which covers roughly a third of all global plantings of that variety. Its reds, built on Garnacha Fina and Cariñena, are gaining a new audience through producers like Celler Frisach who choose traditional fermentation methods and zero-intervention cellaring over modern extraction.
