Tasting notes

Deep purple-ruby with a dense, slightly hazy core. The nose is aromatic and lifted, with dark cherry, blackberry, spice, violet, and a smoky mineral note from the basalt. On the palate, the wine is firm but supple, with a saline mineral thread, fine tannins, and a long, dry finish.

  • Style: Dry, medium-bodied red with a pronounced mineral, volcanic character; the sandstone amphora aging preserves the fine-grained texture and aromatic lift of the Gamay d'Auvergne without adding wood flavour; structured enough to age but approachable on release with decanting
  • Grapes & terroir: 100% Gamay d'Auvergne; 80-year-old vines at Corent, Puy-de-Dôme, Auvergne; pure basalt soil at 490 metres, north-facing slopes; biodynamically farmed with horse-drawn traction; Gamay d'Auvergne is a local biotype of Gamay with smaller berries and thicker skins than the Beaujolais version
  • Winemaking: Whole-cluster maceration with spontaneous fermentation in sandstone amphorae; one year aging in sandstone amphorae; no topping up; bottled unfined, unfiltered, no added sulfur at any stage
  • Serving temperature & decanting: Serve at 61–64°F; decanting for 30 to 60 minutes is recommended to allow the wine to open fully and resolve initial reductive notes from the amphora aging
  • Pairing: Truffade (Auvergne potato and Cantal cheese gratin)

Domaine la Bohème Lulu 2023 is a dry red wine made from 100% Gamay d'Auvergne by Patrick Bouju and Justine Loiseau at Domaine la Bohème in the Puy-de-Dôme. The grapes come from an 80-year-old parcel at Corent, planted on basalt at 490 metres on north-facing slopes, farmed biodynamically with animal traction. Whole-cluster maceration in sandstone amphorae with indigenous yeasts is followed by one year of aging in those same sandstone amphorae. Domaine la Bohème Lulu 2023 is bottled unfined, unfiltered, and without added sulfur at 13% ABV. Vin de France.

Truffade, roast duck with cherry sauce, Japanese yakitori, charcuterie, aged Cantal cheese, Korean galbi, grilled lamb cutlets.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Domaine la Bohème

Domaine la Bohème is the project of Patrick Bouju and Justine Loiseau, based in Saint-Georges-sur-Allier in the Puy-de-Dôme. Patrick grew up in Clermont-Ferrand and studied chemistry before discovering, through a physical intolerance to sulfites, that conventionally made wines were not something he could drink comfortably. Exposure to natural winemakers during his military service in Chalon-sur-Saône in the mid-1990s changed his direction entirely. He went on to study viticulture in Beaune and returned to the Auvergne to farm vines, releasing his first commercial vintage in 2002 and leaving engineering behind altogether in 2008.

The estate today covers around 8 to 9 hectares of its own vines, with some parcels containing vines over 120 years old, including pre-phylloxera survivors. These are planted on the volcanic basalt and clay-limestone soils of the Puy-de-Dôme, worked by horse. In addition to the domaine fruit, Patrick and Justine operate a négociant line that sources grapes from trusted organic and biodynamic growers across France and occasionally beyond, allowing them to work with varieties and terroirs outside their own region. This is how wines like Môl, G&M, Super B Rouge, and others come together under the Domaine la Bohème label.

In the cellar, the approach is zero-compromise: no commercial yeasts, no sulfur, no fining, no filtration. Sandstone and clay amphorae, old barrels, and fiberglass tanks are used depending on the cuvée. Lulu, made from the estate's own Gamay d'Auvergne, is among the most age-worthy wines in the range.

Wine region

Auvergne, France

Auvergne sits in the heart of France, in the Massif Central, where the landscape is defined by ancient volcanic chains. The Puy-de-Dôme department, where Domaine la Bohème farms, takes its name from one of these dormant volcanoes. The vineyard soils here are unlike most of France: basalt, volcanic tuff, and lava rock underlie much of the vine-growing area, particularly around the villages of Corent, Châteaugay, Chanturgue, and Boudes. These volcanic soils drain well, warm relatively quickly in spring, and impart a distinct mineral salinity to wines grown in them.

The appellation Côtes d'Auvergne achieved AOC status in 2011, covering five named subzones within the Puy-de-Dôme. Corent, where the Lulu vines are planted, is one of these subzones and is particularly associated with rosé and red wines from Gamay d'Auvergne. The plateau here lies at elevations between 430 and 500 metres, with north- and east-facing slopes that moderate the summer heat and extend the growing season. This elevation and aspect help preserve natural acidity in the grapes and contribute to the freshness that distinguishes Auvergne reds from warmer southern French wines.

Gamay d'Auvergne is a local biotype of Gamay distinct from the variety grown in Beaujolais. The berries are smaller, the skins thicker, and the variety more naturally resistant to disease — characteristics that make it well suited to the low-intervention farming that Patrick Bouju practices. Viticulture in Auvergne had contracted dramatically through the twentieth century, but has seen a genuine revival over the past two decades led by a small group of committed natural producers.
