Ruby red verging on purple with garnet tinges. The nose is heady and fruit-forward, offering ripe cherries, wild berries, and a floral lift with a hint of spice. On the palate, warm and soft with rounded tannins, bright acidity, dark berry fruit, and a spicy finish.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Castello di Tassarolo

Castello di Tassarolo is a family estate in the commune of Tassarolo in the Gavi zone of southern Piedmont. The Spinola family has been connected to this site since the eighth century, and wine has been made from the surrounding vineyards since 1367. The estate currently spans approximately 20 hectares, all estate-owned and surrounding the castle, planted to Cortese di Gavi as the primary variety alongside Barbera and a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon.

The winery is run by Massimiliana Spinola, who took over the estate and from 2006 began converting the vineyards to biodynamic farming. Organic certification from Bios followed in 2006 and biodynamic certification from AgriBioDinamica in 2007. The estate is also certified USDA Organic and Vegan. A central feature of the farming approach is the use of heavy horses for vineyard work, introduced by Henry Finzi-Constantine, Massimiliana's former partner, who was the first to develop horse-drawn biodynamic farming in northern Italy and continues to promote the method through courses and a nationally recognised qualification in Piedmont. Horse work reduces soil compaction significantly, preserving the microbial life and drainage characteristics of the marl and silty-clay soils.

In the cellar, Massimiliana works with enologist Vincenzo Muni. The pair have developed a method for making the estate's white wines without added sulfur while avoiding oxidative characteristics — an approach they attribute to the quality of biodynamically farmed fruit arriving at the cellar in peak condition. The estate's red wines are also made without added sulfites. The Orsola label, shared by both the Gavi white and this Monferrato Rosso, takes its name from Orsola Spinola, a relative of Massimiliana painted by Andy Warhol — both portraits hang near the estate.

Wine region

Piedmont, Italy

The Monferrato is a broad hillside zone in the heart of Piedmont, spanning the provinces of Alessandria and Asti between the Po plain to the north and the Ligurian Apennines to the south. It is one of the most densely farmed viticultural landscapes in Italy, with vineyards covering nearly every hillside and the DOC and DOCG system reflecting the zone's long-standing complexity and diversity of grapes and styles.

The Monferrato DOC itself is a flexible appellation that permits a wide range of red and white varieties from across the zone — both indigenous Piedmontese grapes and international varieties. It functions as a container for wines that fall outside the more specific appellations nearby, such as Barbera d'Asti, Grignolino del Monferrato Casalese, or Gavi. In the case of the Orsola Monferrato Rosso, the wine is produced within the Gavi zone in the southeastern Monferrato, where the hills of the province of Alessandria approach the Ligurian border.

The soils of this part of the Monferrato are predominantly calcareous, composed of marl and silty clay — marine sedimentary formations from the Miocene epoch that are also the foundation of the Gavi DOCG zone. These pale, calcium-rich soils drain freely and provide a naturally moderate environment for vine cultivation, contributing freshness and mineral character to the wines grown here. The altitude of 300 metres at Tassarolo adds to this natural freshness, tempering the warm Piedmontese summers with cool nights.

The broader Monferrato was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014, as part of the Piedmontese Wine Landscapes recognition that also covers the Langhe and Astigiano. The zone is known internationally above all for Barbera, which thrives on its calcareous clay soils and expresses the combination of ripe fruit and bright natural acidity that makes it one of Piedmont's most food-friendly red grapes.
