Tasting notes

Bright ruby-red with good transparency and violet hints. The nose is fresh and fruit-forward, with Morello cherry, plum, wild strawberry, raspberry, and a mineral, slightly salty earth note. On the palate, juicy and medium-bodied, with bright acidity, soft tannins, red fruit, and a clean, lingering mineral finish.

BodyFruitTanninAcidity
  • Style: Dry, medium-bodied red with the freshness and bright acidity that distinguishes the Cancelli parcel from the heavier, more extracted Montepulciano typically found in Abruzzo; the ten-day maceration extracts genuine color and tannin structure without turning the wine dense or overworked
  • Grapes & terroir: 100% Montepulciano from 40-year-old vines trained in the traditional tendone pergola system at 1,475 ft elevation; calcareous clay with alluvial sediment and fossilized marine deposits in the Cancelli parcel, Pianella, Province of Pescara; biodynamically farmed since 2006; land never treated with chemicals
  • Winemaking: Hand-harvested; destemmed; ten-day skin maceration in open 10-hectoliter vats; spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts; aged in stainless steel; malolactic fermentation occurs naturally in bottle; hand-bottled on March 1; no fining, no filtration, no added sulfites; all activities guided by lunar cycles
  • Serving temperature & decanting: Serve lightly chilled at 57–60°F; no decanting needed
  • Pairing: Arrosticini abruzzesi (traditional Abruzzo skewered lamb)
  • Similar to: Natural Montepulciano d'Abruzzo from Emidio Pepe in a lighter style, carbonic Frappato from Sicily, Gamay from Beaujolais in its chillable freshness

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Vini Rabasco

Vini Rabasco is a small biodynamic estate in Pianella, Province of Pescara, Abruzzo, run by Iole Rabasco. Iole inherited the family property — vineyards and olive groves that her family had farmed without any synthetic chemical treatments — and made a life-changing decision in the early 2000s: she left her career as a lawyer to take over the estate full-time. In 2006, she converted the entire operation to biodynamic farming, an approach she has followed rigorously since.

The estate covers approximately 11 acres including both vines and olive trees, with around 3.5 hectares dedicated to vineyards at roughly 1,475 feet above sea level in the Cancelli parcel and surrounding plots. The vines, primarily Montepulciano with a small number of Trebbiano rows, average 40 years of age and are trained in the traditional tendone pergola system — a canopy-style training that shades the grapes and is common in Abruzzo's hill vineyards. All work is done by hand. The land's calcareous clay soils are mixed with alluvial sediments and fossilized marine deposits — a geological record of the ancient sea that once covered this part of the Apennine foothills.

Iole's winemaking philosophy is one of maximum restraint: she harvests by hand, ferments spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, and bottles without fining, filtration, or any sulfite addition. All vineyard and cellar activities are timed according to the lunar calendar, consistent with biodynamic principles. For the Cancelli Rosso, the 2024 vintage saw ten days of skin maceration — the longer end of what the wine receives — producing a wine with genuine presence without sacrificing the freshness and brightness that define this estate's style. The wine completes malolactic fermentation naturally in bottle and is hand-bottled on March 1 of the year following harvest. Vini Rabasco is distributed in the United States by Jenny & François Selections.

Wine region

Abruzzo, Italy

Abruzzo stretches along the central-eastern spine of Italy, flanked by the Gran Sasso and Maiella massifs of the central Apennines to the west and the Adriatic Sea to the east. It is one of the most topographically dramatic wine regions in Italy — the western mountains rise to over 9,500 feet, making Gran Sasso the highest peak in the Apennines, while the eastern coastal strip drops to sea level within a relatively short distance. This contrast shapes everything about the region's viticulture: altitude, exposure, soil type, and the dual climatic influence of cold mountain air and warm Adriatic breezes all vary significantly depending on where exactly in Abruzzo a vineyard sits.

The Province of Pescara, where Vini Rabasco is based, occupies the central section of the region. The town of Pianella sits on calcareous clay hillsides in the Vestina hills, a subzone of the Pescara province roughly midway between the coast and the mountains. At 1,475 feet above sea level, the Cancelli parcel catches enough mountain air to cool nights significantly even in summer, producing the bright acidity and freshness that characterize Iole Rabasco's wines — a contrast to the denser, more extracted Montepulciano from lower, warmer sites.

Abruzzo's defining red variety is Montepulciano — not to be confused with the Tuscan town — which covers the greatest share of the region's red wine production and underpins the Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC. At its best, Montepulciano produces wines with real depth of color, cherry and plum fruit, fine tannins, and good natural acidity. The variety is well-suited to biodynamic and natural farming because of its natural disease resistance and the thick skins that support spontaneous fermentation without added protection. Trebbiano d'Abruzzo covers the white wine production, and together these two varieties define the soul of Abruzzo's traditional wine identity.
