Tasting notes

Bright, transparent ruby with a light garnet tint. The nose offers delicate red flowers, small red fruits, balsamic herbs, and a peppery note typical of the variety. On the palate, dry and fresh with lively acidity, fine-grained tannins, strawberry and red currant fruit, and a clean finish.

BodyFruitTanninAcidity
  • Style: Dry, light-to-medium-bodied red with relatively high tannins for its weight and colour; Grignolino is naturally pale, aromatic, and high-acid — the brief maceration keeps the wine fresh and approachable while preserving the variety's characteristic tannic structure
  • Grapes & terroir: 100% Grignolino; grown on a bricco in Rosignano Monferrato at Tenuta Mandoletta; shallow, pale calcareous and tufaceous soils naturally constrain yields and concentrate flavour; glauconitic clay soils of marine origin characterise the broader estate; Monferrato Casalese, Piedmont
  • Winemaking: Destemmed and crushed; brief skin maceration in stainless steel; racked off skins after maceration; fermentation completed in stainless steel; 8 months aging on fine lees at controlled temperature; no oak contact
  • Serving temperature & decanting: Serve at 57–61°F; no decanting needed; also works slightly chilled given its freshness and lighter structure
  • Pairing: Salame di Casale Monferrato (local cured salami)
  • Similar to: Grignolino d'Asti, Pelaverga di Verduno, light Schiava from Alto Adige

Bonzano Baticör Grignolino del Monferrato Casalese DOC 2021 is a dry red wine made from 100% Grignolino grown on a bricco — a hilltop vineyard position — at Tenuta Mandoletta in Rosignano Monferrato, in the Alessandria province of Piedmont. The soils on this elevated site are shallow, calcareous, and tufaceous, with a characteristically pale colour, naturally limiting yields and producing small berries. Produced by Bonzano Vini, the grapes are destemmed and crushed, fermented on skins for a brief maceration, then racked off and finished in stainless steel, where the wine ages eight months on fine lees at controlled temperature. Grignolino del Monferrato Casalese DOC.

Salame di Casale, Japanese yakitori chicken skewers, rabbit in white wine, frittata with herbs, bresaola, fresh goat cheese, vitello tonnato.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Bonzano

Bonzano Vini is a family winery based at Tenuta Mandoletta in Rosignano Monferrato, in the Alessandria province of Piedmont. The estate was acquired by the Bonzano family in the 1990s, and from the outset the family set about restoring the property's historic gardens and eventually replanting its vineyards. In 2011, the vineyards were replanted across 20 hectares of the surrounding Monferrato Casalese hills, and the winery project was formally launched with an ambition to produce wines that reflect the specific character of this territory.

The project is a family enterprise led by brothers Enrico, Stefano, and Massimo Bonzano, with Simonetta Ghia, Enrico's wife and the estate's proprietor, playing a central role in guiding and promoting the venture. Winemaking is carried out in collaboration with Donato Lanati, an internationally recognised oenologist and scientist based at Enosis, his research centre in Vincoli, near Asti. Lanati has been involved with the estate since 2011, advising on both vineyard management and cellar work. The winery works across a range of native Piedmontese varieties including Grignolino, Barbera, Pinot Nero, and Chardonnay, alongside Arneis and Sauvignon Blanc. The estate is pursuing a shift toward more sustainable and biological farming practices.

In 2020, Bonzano Vini also took over the management of the nearby Castello di Uviglie, a historic Monferrato estate that had been producing wine for centuries, uniting the two operations under a single brand while maintaining distinct wine lines. The Baticör Grignolino — its name taken from local dialect — was first released in 2018 and 2019 as one of the newer additions to the range, positioned as the estate's Grignolino del Monferrato Casalese DOC expression from the Tenuta Mandoletta bricco.

Wine region

Piedmont, Italy

The Monferrato Casalese occupies the northeastern corner of the broader Monferrato zone in Piedmont, centred on the town of Casale Monferrato in the province of Alessandria. It sits between the Po plain to the north and the rolling hills of the Astigiano to the south, at elevations generally between 150 and 400 metres. The subzone's distinguishing geological feature is the Pietra da Cantoni, a tufaceous calcareous sandstone of marine origin deposited over 20 million years ago during the Eocene. This pale, free-draining, relatively shallow stone gives the soils of the hilltops their characteristic light colour and is the defining terroir element for Grignolino grown here.

Grignolino del Monferrato Casalese DOC is one of the two DOC appellations for Grignolino in Piedmont, the other being Grignolino d'Asti. The Casalese version is generally considered to reflect the more calcareous, mineral character of these northern Monferrato soils. Grignolino is one of the oldest documented native varieties in Piedmont and has historically been associated with the Monferrato and Asti hills, though plantings have declined significantly over the twentieth century as producers turned to more commercially prominent varieties. Today, a small group of estates continues to preserve and develop the variety in its traditional territory.

The landscape of the Monferrato Casalese was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014, recognised alongside other Piedmontese wine landscapes of Langhe and Astigiano. Unique to this zone are the infernot — small underground chambers carved directly out of the Pietra da Cantoni by local farmers, historically used to store food and wine in stable cool conditions, and still found beneath many of the area's farmhouses and estates.
